MOH urges youth blood donation ahead of ageing population

The Sun14-06-2025

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Health (MOH) is intensifying efforts to encourage more young people to become blood donors, as the country prepares to face an ageing population by 2040.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said that by then, 15 per cent of Malaysia's population is projected to be 65 and above, and the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is expected to further impact the pool of regular blood donors.
'Many repeat donors are no longer eligible to donate due to age or health limitations. Therefore, the MOH will continue to strengthen education and awareness initiatives, while also leveraging behavioural science insights from the collaboration between the National Blood Centre (PDN) and the Institute for Health Behavioural Research (IPTK),' he said.
He added that the findings from the study help the ministry better understand the motivations behind repeat blood donations, allowing for more targeted and effective campaigns. These insights will also serve as the foundation for the National Blood Donation Strategic Plan 2026-2030, set to be launched in 2026.
He said this at the national-level World Blood Donor Day 2025 and the PDN's silver jubilee celebration here today, which was also attended by PDN director Dr Mohamad Masrin Md Zahrin, along with 301 blood donors and campaign organisers.
At the ceremony, four individuals - Liew Chin Yap, Liew Ship Boo, Ong See Kim, and Chin Jeck Leng - were honoured with the Medal for Life award for having donated blood more than 500 times over the course of their lives.
Dzulkefly said that the PDN plays a crucial role in developing a more comprehensive donation ecosystem that includes not only blood, but also stem cells and organ donations. Since 2002, over 10,000 units of umbilical cord blood have been analysed to ensure that blood and tissue transfusions are conducted safely and effectively.
He added that approximately 2,000 bags of blood are needed daily to treat around 1,000 patients. In 2024 alone, nearly 800,000 bags of blood were successfully collected, a 4 per cent increase compared with the previous year.
'This is a remarkable achievement, as each bag of donated blood has the potential to save up to three lives,' he said.
In the meantime, he said that his ministry will launch the National Transfusion Medicine Services Policy 2025, developed by the PDN in collaboration with technical experts. The policy will outline strategic directions to strengthen governance, quality assurance, and the blood component supply chain nationwide.
'In addition, the Thalassemia Strategic Plan 2024-2030, launched last May, aims to achieve a donation rate of 3.5 per cent of the population, with 65 per cent comprising healthy repeat donors,' he added.

Middle-aged man in Cambodia dies of H5N1 bird flu

PHNOM PENH (Bernama-Xinhua): A 52-year-old man from southeastern Cambodia's Svay Rieng province had died of H5N1 human avian influenza, becoming the fifth human death from the virus so far this year. "A laboratory result from the National Institute of Public Health showed on June 20 that the man was positive for H5N1 virus," the Ministry of Health said in a press statement on Saturday. Health authorities are looking into the source of the infection and are examining any suspected cases or people who have been in contact with the victim in order to prevent an outbreak in the community, it added. Tamiflu (oseltamivir), an antiviral drug to prevent the bird flu from spreading, was also given out to people who had direct contact with the patient, the statement said. The South-East Asian country recorded a total of six human cases of H5N1 so far this year, with five deaths. - Bernama-Xinhua

Viability of using savings for medical coverage being assessed

KUALA LUMPUR: The proposal to let Employees Provident Fund (EPF) members use Account 2 for monthly health insurance premiums is still under review, says the fund. In a statement to the New Straits Times, EPF said it is working closely with the relevant authorities to assess the viability of the initiative. "EPF is aware of discussions on the proposal to allow the use of savings in Akaun Sejahtera (Account 2) to pay for health insurance premiums. "The proposal is still being considered, and the EPF is working closely with the relevant parties on the matter," it said. The fund added that, as with all proposals involving members' savings, a thorough assessment is being carried out to ensure any new measure balances short-term needs with long-term retirement security. "As with all proposals involving members' savings, careful assessment is being conducted to ensure that any new measures will strike a balance between immediate needs and members' long-term financial wellbeing." The EPF said further updates would be shared through official channels once available. On June 19, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the government is considering allowing EPF members to use their Account 2 savings to pay for monthly health insurance premiums. He said that, if implemented, the initiative could enable 16 million EPF contributors to access private hospital treatment using their contributions. However, Dzulkefly later clarified that the proposed health insurance scheme — funded through EPF Account 2 — would be voluntary and not mandatory. The Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia (APHM) has welcomed the government's proposal to allow EPF members to use their Account 2 savings to pay monthly health insurance premiums, calling it a Its president, Datuk Dr Kuljit Singh, said while the plan is welcomed, it must be accompanied by clear safeguards to ensure its long-term sustainability. He said the responsibility now lies with the relevant agencies to determine the most appropriate funding model, whether through EPF or other mechanisms.

MIRI (June 21): The Open Air Market in Bekenu is set for a major transformation, as the building undergoes upgrading works to become the new Wellness Hub Sibuti, a flagship community health initiative by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH). The project, which began on June 5, involves extensive repair and renovation works costing RM977,804, and is expected to be completed within 24 weeks, by Nov 20 this year. Once completed, the facility will provide integrated and comprehensive health and wellness services to the local community, read a press statement by the Miri Divisional Health Office today. This initiative aligns with MOH's shift from a traditional 'Sick Care' approach to a proactive 'Health Care' mode, aimed at empowering individuals to take ownership of their health, as well as that of their families and communities. The initiative also supports Thrust 2 of the National Agenda for a Healthy Malaysia (ANMS), focusing on the prevention of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and high cholesterol. The upgraded facility will be equipped with modern and eco-friendly features, including consultation rooms, a multimedia studio, meeting rooms, a wellness studio, gymnasium, gallery space, and administrative offices. Services to be offered include health risk assessments, stop-smoking programmes, weight management through the IFitEr (I Fit and Eat Right) programme, lifestyle counselling, and health education. The hub is designed to cater to a wide segment of the community, including teenagers, housewives, senior citizens, and the working population, promoting behavioural changes toward healthier living through skill-building and community engagement.
