Jury sees more sex videos as prosecutors wind down sex trafficking case against Sean ‘Diddy' Combs
This courtroom sketch depicts Sean "Diddy" Combs sitting at the defense table during his bail hearing in New York on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024. (Elizabeth Williams via AP) NEW YORK — The jury at Sean 'Diddy' Combs ' sex trafficking trial viewed more video recordings on Monday of the sex marathons that have played a prominent role in a prosecution that was likely to rest by Tuesday. Assistant U.S. Attorney Maurene Comey sometimes referred to the mostly 1- or 2-minute clips filmed by the music mogul as 'explicit' videos, a signal for jurors to put on headsets that enabled them to hear and view the recordings without them being heard or seen by spectators in the Manhattan courtroom. Prosecutors have cited the drug-fueled multi-day events as evidence of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges, saying Combs relied on employees, associates and his business accounts to fly male sex workers to Miami, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New York, where his staff set up hotel rooms for the encounters and cleaned up afterward. Last week, prosecutors showed jurors about 2 minutes of the footage from 2012 and 2014 involving Combs' then-girlfriend Casandra 'Cassie' Ventura, a male sex worker and Combs. Cassie earlier testified that she participated in hundreds of the 'freak-off' events. She and Combs were in a relationship from 2007 until 2018. Cassie sued Combs in 2023 alleging years of abuse. He settled within hours, and dozens of similar lawsuits followed. The Associated Press doesn't generally identify people who say they are victims of sexual abuse unless they come forward publicly, as Cassie has done. Defense lawyers last week showed the jury about 18 minutes of video clips from the sex performances involving Cassie after a lawyer said in opening statements that the videos prove sexual activity was consensual and not evidence of a crime. On Monday, prosecutors aired nearly 20 minutes of recordings from 2021 and 2022 of a single mother who was identified only by the pseudonym 'Jane,' male sex workers and Combs. Jane testified for six days earlier in the trial that she was romantically involved with Combs from 2021 until his September arrest at a New York hotel room. Joseph Cerciello, a Homeland Security Investigations agent, testified that dozens of the recordings from late 2021 until last August lasted many hours. Comey finished questioning Cerciello in the early afternoon Monday. After a cross-examination by the defense, the prosecution was expected to rest. The trial is in its seventh week, with closing arguments tentatively scheduled for Thursday after what was expected to be a brief defense presentation. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty. He's been active in his defense, writing notes to his attorneys and sometimes influencing when they stop questioning witnesses. Michael R. Sisak and Larry Neumeister, The Associated Press

As closer Jeff Hoffman falters, Blue Jays are missing injured Yimi Garcia that much more
It's easy to go 'out of sight, out of mind' with the walking wounded on the Blue Jays roster, though that would be a gross undersell of the team's season to date. Article content Starting pitcher Max Scherzer is the most-celebrated and talked-about one given that, after a 74-game stint on the injured list with a vexing thumb injury, he's due to return to game action on Wednesday in Cleveland. Article content Article content Anthony Santander, the other high-rent off-season acquisition by the Jays, is the big dude rarely talked about now. Sidelined for 21 games with shoulder inflammation (and only vague speculation on when he will return), the former Orioles slugger is almost literally the forgotten man given the virtual invisibility of his first two months as a Blue Jay. Article content But given the sudden wobbles of the Blue Jays bullpen, the one absence that is perhaps most impactful is that of reliever Yimi Garcia, now missing 28 games (and counting) with what the team describes as a shoulder impingement. Article content When the bullpen was humming, Garcia was better than the ideal setup man for closer Jeff Hoffman. The pair provided a dynamic one-two highest-leverage punch at the back end of the bullpen that were a clear strength of the team in the early going. Article content Article content Garcia didn't allow an earned run in 19 of his 21 appearances and none in his first 14 outings while pitching to a tidy 3.15 ERA. Article content But now with Garcia out and Hoffman struggling, there is at minimum a sense of disarray in the Jays 'pen and, at worst, serious concern for manager John Schneider's late-game options. Article content Hoffman, of course, was money in his early days with the Jays, seemingly easily validating general manager Ross Atkins' decision to move on from Canadian closer Jordan Romano. In the first month of the season, Hoffman allowed just one home run and owned a skimpy 1.17 ERA. Article content Article content Since then, there have been issues. His ERA in the interim is a shade over 9.00 and he has surrendered seven homers and nine walks. The latest blip came in Sunday's blown save against the White Sox, an outcome that was undeniably ugly but, in fairness, was caused more by Hoffman's fielding miscue than how he was operating on the mound. Article content After the game, Schneider was adamant that the Jays 'trust the (poop)' out of Hoffman. That may be the case, but the longer Garcia is out, the more the concern about shutting down wins will heighten.

Anaheim Ducks trade Trevor Zegras to Philadelphia Flyers for Ryan Poehling and draft picks
Article content The Anaheim Ducks are trading forward Trevor Zegras to the Philadelphia Flyers for forward Ryan Poehling and two draft picks, it was announced Monday. Article content The Ducks also will get the 45th overall pick in the upcoming draft that initially belonged to Columbus, along with a fourth-round pick next season. Article content Article content Zegras, the Ducks' first-round pick in 2019, had two 60-point seasons early in his NHL career. He also became well known outside Anaheim for his proficiency with the Michigan goal, in which a player lifts the puck with his stick blade and wraps it into the net from behind. Article content But the 24-year-old Zegras struggled with injuries and consistency for the past two seasons, scoring just 47 points in 88 combined games. He became a topic of frequent trade rumors that finally culminated in this deal. Article content Zegras remained a fan favorite in Anaheim throughout his tenure with the Ducks, who hired coach Joel Quenneville last month to lead them back to the playoffs after a seven-year absence. The Ducks also recently acquired longtime Rangers forward Chris Kreider, who works out with New York native Zegras in the summer. Article content The Flyers also made a major deal with the Ducks in January 2024, with GM Danny Briere sending disgruntled forward Cutter Gauthier to Anaheim in exchange for defenseman Jamie Drysdale, Zegras' longtime friend. Article content The 26-year-old Poehling had 12 goals and 19 assists for Philadelphia last season. He produced the best two offensive seasons of his career with the Flyers after starting out in Montreal and Pittsburgh. Article content
