DEATH row's oldest inmate left behind an eerie plea with his final words before being executed by lethal injection.
Tennessee inmate Oscar Smith, 75, was put to death on Thursday morning for the 1989 murders of his ex-wife and her teenage sons in the state's first execution since 2020.

With his final words, Smith insisted that he was innocent and begged for the justice system to be reformed.
He said: "Somebody needs to tell the governor the justice system doesn't work."
Refuting his conviction one final time, Smith said: "I didn't kill her."
He was pronounced dead at 10:47am on Thursday after receiving a lethal dose of the drug pentobarbital at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution.
The Sun recently spoke to a former death row executioner who saw a killer's head burst into flames and a pastor who has accompanied with more inmates in their final minutes than anyone else.
Smith was convicted of fatally stabbing and shooting his estranged wife Judith Smith, 13-year-old Jason Burnett and 16-year-old Chad Burnett.
He murdered them at the home in Nashville, Tennessee, on October 1, 1989.
Sentenced to death in July 1990, Smith spent almost 35 years on death row, and was its oldest inmate in the US.
A county court judge denied a request to reopen the case in 2022 , despite some new evidence that another person's DNA had been on one of the murder weapons.
The judge ruled that the evidence of Smith's guilt was overwhelming and that the new information did not change that.

Two of Smith's colleagues told the original trial that he asked them to kill Judith.
He also had a history of violence and threats against the family.
Further clinching the conviction was the fact that Smith took out insurance policies on all three of his victims.
The court also heard that one of the teen victims could be heard screaming "Frank, no!" in the background of a 911 call at the time of the murders.
Frank is Smith's middle name, and the one he used regularly.
After Smith had been confirmed dead, Judith's two siblings said they still miss the three victims, all these years later.

Her sister, Terri Osborne, said the deaths are a reminder of the dangers of domestic violence.
She said: 'We know it is an incredibly hard thing to do to leave a spouse who is abusing, but pray that this case becomes a call to action, encouraging those in danger to seek help before it's too late."
Smith's execution was the first in Tennessee since 2020, and he chose the lethal injection - a cocktail of three drugs.
He could alternatively have chosen to be killed in the electric chair.
There has been significant controversy around the method in recent years - with Justice Sonia Sotomayor of the Supreme Court describing it as "the chemical equivalent of being burned at the stake".

In March, a double murderer called Brad Sigmon became the first person in the US to be executed by firing squad in 15 years.
He reportedly kept breathing after being shot three times in the chest.
Three special bullets were shot at his heart by three volunteer riflemen at the South Carolina Department of Corrections in Columbia.
Sigmon, 67, was convicted of beating to death with a baseball bat his ex-girlfriend's parents, David and Gladys Larke, at their Taylors home in 2001.

US senator Alex Padilla criticizes ‘petty' JD Vance for calling him ‘Jose'
JD Vance's decision to refer to California US senator Alex Padilla by the name of a terrorist conspirator showed how 'unserious' the Trump administration is, the lawmaker has said of the vice-president. 'He knows my name – he knows my name,' Padilla told MSNBC's The Weekend on Saturday, 12 days after the FBI forcibly removed him from a 12 June news conference hosted by US homeland security secretary Kristi Noem amid anti-immigration and customs enforcement (Ice) protests in Los Angeles. 'Look, sadly it's just an indicator about how petty and unserious this administration is. You'd think he'd take the situation in Los Angeles more seriously. 'We've got a lot of important work to do. But this is how the vice-president chooses to act, and that says a lot.' Vance's barb toward Padilla on Friday came during a visit to Los Angeles in which he accused mayor Karen Bass and California governor Gavin Newsom of encouraging violent anti-Ice protests to parry criticism from state officials. Local authorities had contended that, over their objections, Donald Trump's administration fueled the unrest by sending federal officers and military troops to the city. 'Evil' student sentenced to life in jail for drugging and raping multiple women
One of Britain's worst rapists suspected of targeting over 60 victims has been jailed for life. Chinese student Zhenhao Zou, 28, was described as an 'evil' sexual predator who hid behind a 'charming mask' as he was imprisoned for a minimum of 24 years for drugging and raping ten women in London and China during his time as a student at University College London. Following his conviction in March, detectives revealed they had evidence relating to suspected attacks on another 50 women after uncovering a sickening collection of trophy videos kept by the engineering PhD student as a souvenir. A further 24 victims came forward to say they were raped by Zou while he was studying in the UK. He filmed some of his victims in sick home videos that he kept of his attacks. Victims told how they were 'haunted' by the sickening attacks as a judge said the sexual deviant had treated unconscious women like 'sex toys' for his own pleasure. Inner London Crown Court heard that Zou had offered to be chemically castrated to avoid a life sentence. However, Judge Rosina Cottage said he would always be a risk to the public because of his 'sexual interest' in 'asserting power and control over women', and added that his victims were just 'pieces in an elaborate game'. Upon sentencing him to life, Judge Cottage said: 'The charming mask hid the fact that you are also a sexual predator.' The son of a wealthy Chinese Communist Party official and industrialist, Zou stalked student bars, accommodation, and online dating apps for victims, plying unsuspecting women with drinks laced with drugs. He lured the women back to his lavish student apartment in East London with the promise of a party or help with studies, before stupefying them with drink and drugs until they fell unconscious, enabling him to film his sickening attacks on hidden bedroom spy cameras. One victim, who Zou had described as 'the perfect girlfriend choice', recalled waking in a strange room after going to a drinking party in 2021. The victim said: 'I experienced for the first time a loss of consciousness. I opened my eyes for a few seconds during the sexual assault in [Zou's] room, he was thrusting violently against my body. I was completely powerless and could only use all my strength to demand he stop. 'Although I lost consciousness just moments later, his face in that moment will clearly stay in my mind forever.' She later awoke naked next to him: 'Panic surged through me-everything about the room I was in was unfamiliar and I had no memory of how I got there. 'That night, it was as if the world had vanished from my life for hours. 'I will never forgive him.' TV appearance: Zou boasted of his sexual prowess and appeared on a dating show in China Another app: A Tinder profile where he appeared under a different name Disturbingly, many of the women targeted may not realize they had been raped as some of Zou's home videos showed his captives so incapacitated that he was able to slap one victim around the face without them rousing. Zou unwittingly left a treasure trove of evidence for officers by recording the attacks for his own twisted gratification and hoarding personal items stolen from victims, ranging from underwear and lipstick, to a Chanel earring. Detectives have established from the video clips seized that there are at least another 50 unknown women attacked. The judge said of her case: 'Outrageously, she was trolled on social media for having bravely warned others. On June 19, jurors who had earlier wept upon seeing the distressing rape videos returned to Inner London Crown Court to see him sentenced. Bespectacled Zou wore a navy suit and tie and he stared at jurors, showing no emotion as he was jailed.
