Boeing rebuilding trust as airline bosses see improved jet quality

NEW DELHI, June 5 (Reuters) - Airline bosses are tentatively voicing greater confidence in Boeing's (BA.N), opens new tab ability to deliver jets at the right quality in a step towards ending years of reputational damage for the embattled planemaker.
An annual summit of airline leaders in New Delhi this week struck a more optimistic tone about Boeing's recovery from overlapping safety, regulatory and industrial crises, though executives stressed Boeing still had much work left to do.
"What we've seen quarter to quarter is an improvement in safety, an improvement in quality," Seattle-based Alaska Airlines (ALK.N), opens new tab CEO Ben Minicucci told Reuters at the International Air Transport Association's annual meeting.
"Are they yet there? No, there's still a lot of work."
In January last year, a door missing four bolts blew off a new Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX jet at 16,000 feet. The ripple effect from the incident caused a crisis throughout the aviation industry, hitting suppliers, carriers and passengers.
Planemakers often have to run the gauntlet of airline criticism at IATA's annual meeting, where IATA head Willie Walsh last year urged Boeing to learn from errors that fuelled a crisis beginning with fatal crashes of two MAX jets in 2018 and 2019.
One of Boeing's most vocal recent critics has been Tim Clark, president of Emirates, the largest customer for big jets like the Boeing 777 and its long-delayed successor the 777X.
At his annual sit-down with reporters at the summit this year, Clark spoke more positively about getting "clearer messages" from Boeing's recently appointed leadership.
He welcomed a change of style under CEO Kelly Ortberg, revealing he had never met Ortberg's ousted predecessor Dave Calhoun.
"It was nice to meet the head of Boeing," he said.
Clark, whose airline has 205 of the still uncertified 777X on order, suggested growing confidence from Boeing in private.
"When I talk about cautious optimism, in the last few years I had seen none of that" he said.
Ortberg, who took the helm last August, has said he will address safety and quality concerns and repair trust with regulators, staff and customers.
Boeing customers said the measures are showing some results.
While Boeing is still trying to ramp up production, there have been improvements in quality and visibility of deliveries.
"There is still further to go but it is definitely an improving story," said Peter Barrett, CEO of lessor SMBC Aviation, a major leasing company and Boeing customer.
Few are taking Boeing's recovery solely on trust.
Alaska Airlines has sent its own quality inspectors to Boeing's production lines and commissioned a quarterly audit.
Alaska's Minicucci said Boeing had put in a "very diligent, deliberate process" to reduce out-of-sequence work, a disruption to normal factory flows blamed in part for the oversight of the missing bolts.
He noted that Ortberg, who has moved to Seattle to be closer to the biggest jet plants, and Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Stephanie Pope, appointed last March, regularly tour factories.
"They're getting out there, they're walking the floor, they're feeling what's going on," Minicucci said. "I think that's different to what happened in the past."
Other customers have noted progress, despite a bruising strike last year which halted most of Boeing's jet production.
United Airlines (UAL.O), opens new tab CEO Scott Kirby, who took part in a revolt by U.S. airlines that triggered Calhoun's exit after the Alaska incident, said last week Boeing had "turned the corner".
Still, few airline chiefs have any illusions about the scale of turnaround needed to restore the status of Boeing factories.
"When I was there last year... I thought this is going nowhere at this rate," Clark said, adding he would return this year to see for himself the progress made since then.
Boeing declined to comment on specific airline opinions.
Nor does the brighter public tone mean airlines will necessarily ease pressure in private as they wait for new jets.
But several airline executives at the IATA event acknowledged that Boeing had passed one key test of support at the industry's biggest annual podium, as it slowly stabilises production.
"We have got a lot of work still to do (but) there is a lot of positivity from customers on our performance in the first five months of the year," Boeing Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales Brad McMullen said.
It now faces a decisive test as regulators review higher output after Boeing hit a temporary ceiling of 38 MAX jets a month. It also seeks certification of models including the 777X.
The acting head of the Federal Aviation Administration said on Wednesday higher output would not happen straightaway.
Originally due to receive the 777X in 2020, Clark held out little hope of getting the upgraded jet before IATA meets again in June next year. Boeing has said it is now due in 2026.
"The important thing is they get it out and it's certified to the rigours of the new Boeing: the new approach to building aircraft, safety of operation and all the quality controls that they were having difficulties with prior to that," Clark said.

Markets are wagering that "risk of further escalation seems low", a trader at a large private bank said, pointing out to the quick cooling of crude oil prices after an initial jump. Brent crude oil futures rose to a peak of $81.4 per barrel but pared gains to quote up 1.7% at $78.3 per barrel. Dollar-rupee forward premiums, too, reflected limited concern about a sharp depreciation of the rupee. The 1-month forward premium was nearly flat at 11.25 paisa. Far forward premiums also showed a contained reaction. However, as a large oil-importing nation, India remains vulnerable to risks from sharp spikes in oil prices, MUFG said in a note. "We would likely revise our USD/INR forecast profile higher if geopolitical risks remain elevated moving forward. Nonetheless, given the weakness already seen in INR, the balance of risks for the currency could be more two-sided." Dampened risk appetite also weighed on Asian currencies and equities across the board. India's benchmark equity indexes, the BSE Sensex (.BSESN), opens new tab and Nifty (.NSEI), opens new tab, fell about 0.8% each. The Korean won led losses among Asia FX with a 0.9% decline.

Oil prices surged to a five-month high and Asian share markets tumbled as global trading resumed for the first time since the US joined Israel in striking Iranian nuclear facilities, jolting investors and raising fears of wider regional instability. Investors were waiting to see how Iran would respond after Tehran vowed that the American attack would have 'everlasting consequences ' and declared that it was keeping all options open. The attack targeted three Iranian nuclear facilities early on Sunday morning. Global crude oil benchmark Brent jumped 2 per cent after rallying as much as 5.7 per cent when the market opened on Monday. The price reached $81.40 per barrel, the highest in five months, before giving up some of the gains. Asian markets reacted cautiously. There was no widespread panic in financial markets as analysts expressed concern about further escalation, which could fuel inflation and affect central bank decisions on interest rates. Japan 's benchmark Nikkei 225 plunged 0.56 per cent, South Korea 's stock index Kospi lost 1.05 per cent and Taiwan 's Taiex fell 1.5 per cent. These countries rely heavily on oil imported through the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil trade route which Iran could shut down in retaliation for the US attack. Iran, one of the largest crude producers on the planet, has threatened to shut down the Strait of Hormuz in a move widely seen to hurt the West. A fifth of the world's oil passes through the narrow waters that Iran shares with Oman and the UAE. The Iranian parliament has voted to close the strait and the decision now rests with the Supreme National Security Council, a body led by an appointee of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Any disruption to supply could significantly impact the global economy, driving up crude prices and dealing a heavy blow to major importers such as China, India, and Japan. 'The situation remains highly fluid and much hinges on whether Tehran opts for a restrained reaction or a more aggressive course of action,' Kristian Kerr, head of macro strategy at LPL Financial in Charlotte, North Carolina, said in a commentary. The US directly joined Israel 's war on Iran by conducting attacks against at least three nuclear facilities early on Sunday morning. Israel had kicked off the conflict on 13 June, launching a series of overnight strikes on nuclear facilities, missile capabilities and air defences. The Israeli attacks have killed nearly 400 people and wounded 3,056, according to the Iranian health ministry. Iran has responded by launching a wave of missile and drone attacks on Israel, inflicting damage to military and civilian infrastructure.

The bombs used in the strikes, called Massive Ordnance Penetrators, or MOPs, weigh 30,000 pounds each and cost millions to produce. MOPs, also known as the Guided Bomb Unit, or GBU-57, are GPS-guided weapons designed to burrow deep into underground targets, like fortified tunnels or bunkers. The bombs are around 20 feet long and span six feet at their widest point. The three nuclear sites - Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan - sustained "extremely severe damage and destruction," according to initial assessments, Caine said. While Israel has bunker-busters a fraction of its weight, only the MOP has the capability to destroy or severely damage Iran's nuclear facilities, experts previously told USA TODAY. Boeing won $70 million contracts for bunker busters It's unclear exactly how much the MOP costs, but defense contracts to produce them have been worth tens of millions. The Department of Defense in 2019 handed Boeing $70 million to work on the weapons at its St. Louis facility. The company won updated contracts for MOP production worth more than $77 million in 2021. 'Largest' B-2 strike in history The B-2 bomber is the only aircraft capable of carrying the massive MOPs - each bomber can hold a pair of the bombs. Seven B-2 bombers flew the 14 bombs to Iran from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, but more than 125 aircraft were involved in the mission, according to Caine. "This was the largest B-2 operational strike in U.S. history and the second longest B-2 mission ever flown," Caine said. The Air Force ran five successful test drops of the bombs at New Mexico's White Sands Missile Range in 2012 - three with live warheads, and two with inert warheads.
