Ohio State Athletics to revenue share starting with four sports
College athletics is again going through some seismic shifts, and the latest came from the approved House Settlement last week. It'll significantly alter Name, Image and Likeness, how kids transfer, and more. If programs haven't gotten out in front of what everyone knew was coming, they are already behind.
The Ohio State athletic department seems to be one of the programs that has its ducks in a row as another new era in college athletics begins. With athletic departments now expected to distribute funds directly to players, they need to find a way to pay out approximately $20.5 million and allocate those payments across the athletic universe on their college campuses.
There's simply no way to pay every athlete in every athletic program where it's worth much, so Ohio State has a plan to start with four sports. OSU Athletic Director Ross Bjork met with the media on Thursday and went deeper into what this House Settlement with the NCAA means, and he touched on revenue pay. According to Bjork, the Buckeye athletic department will begin making payments to football, as well as men's and women's basketball, and lastly, women's volleyball. All of the $20.5 million will count towards scholarships handed out across all sports, but the remaining $18 million will be doled out to these four sports.
That's interesting, and for sure football and men's and women's basketball make a lot of sense. I'm sure there was equity between male and female sports discussed here, but you have to wonder why softball wasn't a part of the initial equation -- especially with the rise in popularity.
Regardless, it's a starting point and something that could change in the future, but we all know it starts and pretty much ends with football in Columbus, and that will always be the case as the biggest revenue-generating sport that funds all others.
At some point, we'll get a look at what each of the athletic departments in the Big Ten and across the country decide to do, and it's important to note that NIL still plays a part, but not as much as it did before without gaining clearance from the Clearing House. It's just another swift change in college athletics, and you can bet the dust has yet to settle.

And, unfortunately for those of us who are competing with Father Time ourselves, the younger players won the half-court shooting competition and took the title of the "June Olympics" with a final 6 to 5 score. You can check out the highlights below. By the looks of it, it took just one shot to win it after several airballs and misfires. Watch as the shot goes through the bottom of the net for the players to claim supremacy. As if the youth in the building didn't have enough talking to do, now the elder statesmen in the program will have to live with the loss until next summer when we see if the "June Olympics" make another appearance. WATCH: Ohio State incoming transfer Christoph Tilly is already balling in Columbus
The Ohio State basketball program went through an extreme makeover after the disappointing season last year. The Buckeyes kept the likes of Bruce Thornton, Devin Royal, and John Mobley Jr., but they lost others who were thought to be key pieces of the future when OSU got them prior. So, head coach Jake Diebler and the staff had to retool a bit and try to bring in the talent and pieces they thought could build momentum to get back to the NCAA Tournament this year and lay a foundation for getting the team back among one of the best in the Big Ten and country. One of those keys was to bring in a big man, but not just any big man. Today's game almost necessitates a guy who can go both inside and out for spacing on the floor and forced matchups from the other sideline. To do that, Ohio State went out and convinced former Santa Clara big man, Christop Tilly to come to Columbus out of the transfer portal. We've already heard from Dielber on what he brings to the table, but now we have some highlights of him balling out in some of the controlled scrimmages the OSU basketball team has been going through. By the looks of the video shared on the Ohio State Hoops "X" account, it sure feels like Tilly should provide Ohio State with some scoring, athleticism, and needed stretching of opposing Big Ten defenses next year. Take a look for yourself below. There's a lot of optimism in Columbus because of Tilly and the other pieces that have been brought in, but it all means absolutely nothing until the team shows what it can do on the floor when things tip off this winter. 4-star edge rusher, Alabama target announces official commitment date
A prospect that the Alabama Crimson Tide recently made the top three finalists for earlier this month, a date is now set for the commitment decision of highly-touted edge rusher Cincere Johnson.
