The Hindu08-06-2025

The Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) has secured nine SKOCH Platinum awards.
Established in 2007 and operating under the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department (MA&UD), MEPMA addresses urban poverty through a multi-dimensional approach that integrates livelihood generation, financial inclusion, skill development, housing and women empowerment, according to a release from the department.
Out of 14 innovative projects submitted by MEPMA, nine were chosen for the recognition. The nine initiatives pertain to the welfare of self-help groups (SHGs), urban homeless, street vendors and unrecognised occupational groups.
'This is a moment of pride not just for the department, but for every individual who has been empowered through these interventions. Our aim has always been to create lasting, inclusive change,' said S. Suresh Kumar, Principal Secretary, MA&UD Department, in the press statement.
He added that the MEPMA field staff have been instrumental in implementing the policy. 'From training SHG members in digital tools to facilitating access to markets, their efforts have touched thousands of lives,' Mr. Suresh Kumar said.
MEPMA mission director N. Tej Bharat said these awards are a recognition of the tireless efforts of their teams and commitment of the SHGs.
The SKOCH Awards are a prestigious independent civilian award presented by the SKOCH Group. The SKOCH Platinum awards will be formally presented at the SKOCH Summit in New Delhi on September 20.

To boost employment, Telangana mulls reviving self-help groups (SHGs) for disabled; plans include microloans & skill training

HYDERABAD: In an effort to empower people with disabilities, the state govt is looking at reviving self-help groups for people with disablities which would provide them self-employment opportunities as well as improve their financial status. There are around 10 lakh disabled persons residing in the state, according to the 2011 Census data. Similar to women's self-help groups (SHGs), plans are afoot to set up these SHGs for the disabled where priority would be given to savings. While there were about 70,000 such groups in the past, many have become inactive after 2016. The govt plans to reactivate these groups as well as establish new ones. Guidelines are currently being prepared under the supervision of Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP). Officials are working on modalities such as membership numbers, monthly savings amounts and collection procedures in areas lacking banking facilities. Once all considerations are finalised, guidelines are expected to be issued. In the past, each group consisted of six to seven members. To join a group, an Aadhaar card and a local address will be mandatory. In urban areas, staff from Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas will provide assistance. These SHGs would help with microloans for agricultural and non-agricultural activities. Support for technical and vocational training, marketing facilities and subsidised financing will also be available, officials said.

Use, promote products made by SHGs: CS to state officials

Dehradun: Chief secretary Anand Bardhan has directed all principal secretaries, secretaries, heads of departments, and district magistrates to actively promote self-help groups (SHGs) by using their products and services. In a letter issued on Thursday to officials, Bardhan noted that under the Uttarakhand State Rural Livelihood Mission, SHGs are engaged in various entrepreneurial and livelihood activities in rural areas. Women's groups are particularly involved in food processing and running canteens, providing quality services while maintaining food safety and hygiene standards. He instructed that govt, semi-govt meetings, and other events at the state, district, and development block levels should, as far as possible, engage women's self-help groups for catering services. "For this, contact can be made with the project director or assistant project director of rural development," Bardhan said. The chief secretary further emphasized using locally made SHG products or items from the House of Himalayas brand as mementos and gifts for distinguished guests during official programs. Bardhan also directed that millet-based and other local nutritious products made by SHGs be prominently used during refreshments in official programs, workshops, training sessions, and meetings. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Kardiolog: Tento trik čistí játra a zajišťuje ploché břicho Dozvědět se víc Undo He added that SHGs should be given priority in operating canteens and outlets on govt premises. Meanwhile, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami held a high-level meeting on Thursday at the CM residence to review preparations for the 25th Central Zonal Council meeting, chaired by Union home minister Amit Shah, scheduled for June 24 in Varanasi. Dhami asked officials to develop innovative and concrete proposals that balance ecological and economic needs to ensure sustainable and inclusive development of the state. During the meeting, he emphasised the importance of focusing on children's nutrition, physical and mental development. "The future of children is the future of the state and the country. An integrated and goal-oriented plan should be developed for their comprehensive development," Dhami said, asking the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS), food security, health, and sports departments to work in coordination to provide nutrition, sports, healthcare, and mental wellness support to children. He also directed officials to ensure mandatory Ayushman scheme registration in all govt hospitals and asked the women and child development department to regularly review malnutrition and anemia cases and launch corrective campaigns.

Andhra Pradesh slashes UDA charges to give a boost to food processing sector

In a move to give a fillip to the food processing industry, the Government of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday issued a G.O. (Ms. No. 102) rationalising the Urban Development Authority (UDA) charges for setting up the food processing and allied units. The revised charges, covering building permit fee and development, betterment, and site approval charges, aim to ease the financial burden on businesses, particularly Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), operating in the rural and peri-urban areas. In an official communication, S. Suresh Kumar, Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department, described it as a proactive step to strengthen the food processing sector and drive equitable regional development. The move followed representations from the stakeholders and industry associations through the Andhra Pradesh Food Processing Society (APFPS). Industry leaders pointed out that the UDA charges were considerably higher than in many other States, making it difficult for new units to operate, especially in the areas recently brought under the UDA limits. These costs were proving to be a deterrent to growth in a sector widely seen as key to job creation and value addition in agriculture. Responding to these concerns, the government instructed that the UDA fees applicable to food processing units be aligned with the concessional structure currently in force in the gram panchayat areas, as per G.O. Ms. No.12 of the PR&RD (PTS-III) Department dated February 8, 2016. 'This rationalisation will significantly reduce the cost of compliance for the MSMEs and attract more investments into the food processing space,' Mr. Suresh Kumar said. 'It is a strategic intervention that supports our dual objectives of promoting industrial decentralisation and sustainable urban development,' he added. He said the government's aim was to create a business-friendly environment that not only attracts private investment but also distributes growth more evenly across the State.
