A dramatic hit-wicket dismissal to
Kusal Mendis
stole the spotlight in Mullanpur as
Mumbai Indians
edged Gujarat Titans by 20 runs in a record-breaking IPL 2025 Eliminator that saw a staggering 436 runs scored—the most in any IPL playoff.
Chasing MI's daunting 228/5, GT's early hopes were pinned on Mendis and Sai Sudharsan after Shubman Gill fell cheaply. The Sri Lankan looked in rhythm, hammering two sixes and a four in a brief 10-ball stay. But just as the 64-run stand with Sudharsan was blossoming, chaos struck.

Facing
Mitchell Santner
, Mendis lost his balance attempting a forceful stroke and accidentally trod onto his stumps, getting out hit wicket for 20. The moment was surreal—GT were 67/2 in 6.2 overs and cruising—until that lapse shifted the game's tone.
Sai Sudharsan continued valiantly with his sixth fifty of the season, while Washington Sundar's 48 kept GT in touch. But with wickets falling at regular intervals, and Sudharsan bowled in the 16th over, GT's chase slowly unravelled.
'I don't want to be a one-season wonder': Punjab Kings' Shashank Singh
MI's bowlers held their nerve in the death overs despite heavy dew. Debutant Richard Gleeson delivered under pressure, while Ashwani Kumar closed out the match with 24 required off the final over.
Quiz:
Who's that IPL player?
Earlier,
Rohit Sharma
's elegant 81 and Jonny Bairstow's explosive 47 on debut powered MI to their imposing total. Tilak Varma and
Hardik Pandya
added fireworks at the finish.
GT's elimination was sealed by their lapses—none more symbolic than Mendis' freak hit-wicket—as Mumbai advanced to face Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2.

Josh Hazlewood reacts to Mitchell Johnson's explosive 'IPL' rant over Australia's WTC loss: 'We know what's going on'
Australia speedster Josh Hazlewood finally responded to Mitchell Johnson's scathing assessment of his performance in the World Test Championship (WTC), which the side lost against South Africa at Lord's Cricket Ground. A day after Australia's defeat in the summit clash, Johnson slammed Hazlewood, questioning him over prioritising the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) over the national team. Josh Hazlewood reacts to Mitchell Johnson's IPL rant after Australia's loss to South Africa in the WTC final. (Action Images via Reuters) Hazlewood, who was suffering a shoulder niggle, returned from Australia to India for the IPL 2025 playoffs. He helped RCB win the tournament for the first time. In the 18th edition of the competition, the tall pacer returned with a total of 22 wickets. However, he had a disappointing outing in the WTC final as he returned with just two wickets. Following this performance, Mitchell Johnson launched a critical attack on the pacer, saying his return to the IPL raised quite a few "eyebrows." 'We've seen concerns about Hazlewood's fitness in recent years, and his decision to prioritise returning to the delayed Indian Premier League over his national team preparations raised eyebrows,' Johnson wrote in his column in The West Australian. Hazlewood responds Ahead of the first Test between Australia and the West Indies, Josh Hazlewood has now reacted to these comments, explaining his decision to return to the IPL and how it served as proper preparation for the WTC final. Also Read: Mitchell Johnson rips Josh Hazlewood for IPL call, demands action after WTC loss "I haven't seen any of that, to be honest. We know what's going on inside our rooms. It seemed far and away the best place to get ready for any type of cricket that was coming up. The weather was definitely a factor as well. Just getting over there and playing intense competition like that, it's hard to replicate in training," he told the Sydney Morning Herald. "Sydney, it was raining, and I had literally nowhere to bowl. I got to Brisbane for three or four days, and it was very wet. We were lucky to get on. I just thought the best place to bowl was India. We were still in the competition, we were going to play the semis, and I was going to be there for 10 days. I think it was comfortably the best option," he added. The first Test between Australia and the West Indies will begin on June 25. The match will be played in Barbados. The visitors will be without both Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne. Steve Smith injured his finger while attempting to take a catch in the WTC final, while Labuschagne has been dropped owing to his poor performances with the bat.

‘Old head on very young shoulders': Dinesh Karthik reveals Sai Sudharsan's off-field preps after Test debutant takes notes before batting
A duck did not deter Sai Sudharsan from keeping his preparatory and visualisation regimes intact for the second innings on his his Test debut against England at Leeds on Sunday. If anything, it only get better as the young no. 3 waited of his turn to bat as openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul strode out with India only holding a six-run lead. Desperate to make amends and avoid a dubious pair, Sudharsan was seen taking down notes on a live broadcast as fellow southpaw Jaiswal and senior batter Rahul negotiated the new, dark Dukes ball. The left-handed batter was also spotted following the ball, visualising with his helmet on. Sudharsan was seen lifting the ball and raising it before his eyes, and moving it sideways while keeping track of the path. Sudharsan's Tamil Nadu statemate and former India wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik revealed that the Gujarat Titans batter follows a strict and elaborate off-field preparatory regime ahead of games. 'I'm pretty sure he writes a journal. He is someone who has a very old head on very young shoulders. He does a lot of things off the field, like meditation, plenty of yoga, and has a very long warm-up regime as well. He is a man who is ready to shine on this international scene. In the limited opportunities that he has had in ODI, he has done really well, and now he has got his opportunity in Test cricket as well,' Karthik remarked. After being caught down leg by the wicket-keeper for a duck in the first innings, Sudharsan responded with a firm 30-run knock before a booming in-swinger from England captain Ben Stokes had him flick a delivery to the mid-wicket fielder, shortly before close of play on Day 3. 'First innings, caught down the leg side, but today he looked solid. He played the part, and as luck would have it, it's not going to be easy. You need to fight it out. One innocuous shot and caught at midwicket. That's how the game goes,' said Karthik on Sky Sports.

Mohammed Siraj Targeted With Sly Dig Over Spat With England Star: "Not 1st Time..."
Former Indian cricket team wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik took a sly dig at Mohammed Siraj after his war of words with England's Harry Brook in the ongoing first Test match. Siraj had an on-field spat with Brook but the England batter was not rattled as he continued to play his shots freely. Karthik pointed out that this was not the first time that an England batter was able to get into Siraj's head. He recalled Siraj's spat with Phil Salt during an Indian Premier League (IPL) clash that ended with Salt slamming 87 runs off 45 deliveries. "It's not the first time that someone from North England has taken on Siraj. I've seen Phil Salt do it as well," Karthik said during a discussion on Sky Sports Cricket. Meanwhile, former India captain Sourav Ganguly is hoping that fellow pacers will contribute more in the ongoing Test series against England and release pressure from pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah so that he can be available for all five matches of the tour. Bumrah was India's standout bowler and helped the side to bundle out hosts for 465 in their first innings on Day 3. He returned with the figures of 5-83 in 24.4 overs. Despite being injury-prone and also managing his workload on the tour, he bowled the second-most overs for India, Mohammed Siraj bowled the most - 27 overs - for the visiting side. Former BCCI president lauded Bumrah's adaptability to contribute in all formats of the game for the country. However, the legendary left-handed batter pointed out a lack of support from fellow pacers including Shardul Thakur, Prasidh Krishna and Siraj. Krishna bagged three wickets while Siraj got hold of two scalps but both of them leaked more than hundred runs which reduced India's first-innings lead to just six runs. Ganguly believes Bumrah's presence in India's playing XI will keep them alive in the five-Test crucial series on challenging English conditions. "Such a pleasure to watch Bumrah bowl in all formats of the game .. hope fully he will get support from the other end so that he can play 5 tests .. it will keep India in the series .. @bcci @Jaspritbumrah93," Ganguly wrote on X.
