Hilton and Michaelhouse to play with purpose to raise R25k for GBV victims
'He killed her, my boy. He killed her.'
These are the words Hilton College rugby player Nqubeko Majozi will remember when he steps onto the field to play the school's traditional rival, Michaelhouse, on Saturday.
The Hilton College first team is 'playing with purpose' to raise R25,000 for the Angels' Care Gender-Based Violence Crisis Centre, a safe haven dedicated to protecting, empowering and supporting survivors of abuse. For every try scored, members of the public will have the opportunity to pledge a donation in support of the cause.
Majozi, who is the portfolio head of community partnerships at the school, has been personally affected by GBV.
'On December 23 last year, I got a call from my mother. She was crying uncontrollably. All she managed to say was: 'He killed her, my boy. He killed her.' That's how I found out my cousin, Amanda Malaza, had been murdered by her boyfriend in their home, a place that should have been safe,' he said.
'On the day of Amanda's funeral, we learnt that my aunt had also been strangled while walking home.'
Both became names on a growing list of South African women lost to gender-based violence, he said.
'This is the reality of our country. And it hurts deeply. We are in crisis — one stealing the lives of women and girls daily. And as young men, we cannot stay quiet. Our silence allows it to continue.

Man shot dead after being robbed of backpack in Inanda, KZN
A man was shot dead in Inanda, KZN, on Saturday, 21 June 2025, after being robbed of his backpack. According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), a motorist reported to the security company after witnessing two men attacking the victim with pipes. The motorist recalled that the suspects quickly fled the scene with the victim's backpack upon noticing him stop. The motorist said that he was unaware that the victim had been shot. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were summoned to the scene and found the man unresponsive. Paramedics declared him dead after he sustained a gunshot wound to his back that went through his chest. The suspects have not been apprehended yet. Two-night shift employees at a used spare business in Hazelmere, KZN, were attacked by six armed robbers and tied up for 11 hours on Friday, 20 June 2025. The suspects covered the victims' faces and tied them up at gunpoint. RUSA explained, 'Their hands & feet were bound with belts & shoelaces. Used vehicle bumpers & body parts were then stacked on top of the victims & they were found by dayshift staff eleven (11) hours later in the same position.' The suspects stole mag rims, power tools, car body parts and other items worth thousands of rands throughout the night. According to reports, it is alleged that the leader of the gang was a Mozambican National who was an employee at the same company. The foreign national had his face covered up when the robbery was in progress. He was found in possession of the items taken during the robbery and was arrested. Additional items were discovered in various locations at a home near the Hazelmere Dam. The suspect told RUSA that his accomplices had fled the scene and were on the run. Investigations are taking place. How the Correctional Services plans to allocate R1. 2 billion for prisoner food provision
The Department of Correctional Services has placed the provision of food for prisoners as one of the top four cost drivers of its budget after compensation of employees, property payments, and public-private partnership support. Responding to parliamentary questions from EFF MP Betty Diale, Groenewald said the department spent R1.4 billion on the provision of food on prisoners in 2023/24 financial year. The amount had increased to R1.5 billion in the last financial year that ended in March 2025. 'For the 2025/26 financial year, the department allocated R1,286,972,000 for the provision of nutrition to inmates,' he said. Video Player is loading. The document puts the provision for food to the tune of R952,975. Groenewald also said the department planned to maximise the utilisation of the services of the prisoners to produce food for themselves, to enable the department to redirect funds to other essential programmes. He said the prisoners will participate in the production workshops in agriculture to maximise their skills utilisation for bread and agricultural production for their ration. 'The self-sufficiency and sustainability programme in the department is centred around offender development, through the provision of work opportunities to offenders in bakeries and agriculture. Expansion of bakeries and agricultural projects towards an increase in offender skills utilisation for food production,' he said. The department's strategic plan document states that the department wants to become self-sustainable through activities such as those in production workshops, bakeries, agriculture, skills development, formal education and training, as well as through arts and culture. 'The department will expand marketing of production workshops' products and services to other client departments to improve revenue generation.' Meanwhile, Groenewald revealed that the cost per capita per inmate incarcerated for the 2025/26 financial year is R462.13 per day. Asked how his department managed financial implications for imprisonment of foreign nationals, he said there were 13,181 sentenced foreign nationals in prisons as at May 4 this year. 'The total cost to accommodate 13,181 sentenced foreign nationals on 4 May 2025 was R6,091,335.53 per day.' He stated that foreign national prisoners were not a separate category of inmates. Groenewald added that there were currently no bilateral agreements with neighbouring countries to transfer sentenced foreign national prisoners to serve in their countries of origin. 'The DCS is in consultation with the South African Police Service, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, and Department of International Relations and Cooperation to formalise a South African procedure to inter-state transfer of offenders.'

Bogus tax practitioner gets 3 years behind bars for defrauding SARS out of R60k
JOHANNESBURG - A bogus tax practitioner linked to alleged underworld boss Nafiz Modack will spend three years behind bars for defrauding the South African Revenue Service (SARS) out of R60,000. Faried van der Schyff, who is also a co-accused in Modack's organised crime trial, was sentenced in the Cape Town Regional Court on Friday. It's understood that the 59-year-old posed as a registered tax consultant and illegally submitted documents to SARS, deceiving clients and pocketing the money. He was convicted on five charges, including income tax fraud, violations of the Tax Administration Act, and contravention of the Correctional Services Act. Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani said, 'It was reported that van der Schyff committed fraud from 2016 to 2019 by operating illegally as a tax practitioner, without being registered with the South African Revenue Service.' Van der Schyff remains a co-accused in the Western Cape High Court trial involving Modack and 14 others, a case with nearly 3,000 charges, including murder, extortion and racketeering.
