Wetsuit drive brings waves of hope

Young surfers from Wave of Hope shone at the recent Ugu District surfing trials for the South African Junior Champion team. Senzo Shange, coach and project leader of the Genesis Wave of Hope Surf Ministry, said the group – Zamokuhle Gcaba, Esam Nyembezi, Enhle Nyembezi and Angel Ngwane – did well in all their heats. 'The group of aspiring surfers are now waiting for the results to see if they made the team to compete in Jeffrey's Bay.' Senzo thanked his assistant coaches, Samkelo Tshezi and Kwanele Lushaba, who play a huge role in guiding and training them. This winter, Wave of Hope is collecting wetsuits and wax for surfers between the ages of 10 and 17. Wave of Hope is a project of Genesis Hope South Africa that aims to support young teenagers in communities, by teaching surfing. The team is out in the ocean all year round, building the community and disciplining young surfers. But, winter brings cold water and young surfers don't have wetsuits to keep them warm. Do you have a wetsuit that you no longer use? Drop-off is at Genesis Youth Centre in Port Shepstone until the end of July. Contact Senzo on 078 7142289. Hoedspruit riders selected for nationals

HOEDSPRUIT – Four talented young showjumpers from Hoedspruit have earned the honour of representing Limpopo at the upcoming South African Youth Championship, to be held at Kyalami Equestrian Park in Johannesburg from June 28 to July 6. Three riders from Lowveld Academy, Tyla Coetzee, Enola De Biasi and Khali De Wet, have shown consistent form throughout the year. Coetzee will be competing in the 80cm class with her trusted mount, Lady Cheval. De Biasi and De Wet, both riding in the 90cm class, will be competing with their horses Comical Guy and Xan Xim Shakira, respectively. Joining them is Rebecca Prioleau, who will also compete in the 80cm class aboard her horse Jesray's Namoos. Prioleau's inclusion highlights the depth of talent emerging from the Hoedspruit region. The youth championship is a highly anticipated annual event that brings together the country's top young riders across many different disciplines, offering a platform to compete at a national level and gain exposure in a professionally run, high-calibre setting. This selection is not only a significant personal achievement for the riders but also a proud moment for the local equestrian community. 'It's wonderful to see such young talent being recognised,' said Sheri-Lee MaGuire, rider representative for the Limpopo Showjumping Committee. These riders have worked incredibly hard, and we're thrilled to see their efforts rewarded with the opportunity to represent Limpopo. The equestrian community in Hoedspruit and Limpopo will be cheering them on as they take to the national stage later this month,' MaGuire said.
