MP flays Congress govt for refusing to transfer Suhas Shetty case to NIA

Capt Brijesh Chowta said that the Congress govt's refusal to hand over the investigation of Suhas Shetty's murder to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) raises deeply troubling questions. "This is not merely administrative hesitation — it reflects a dangerous intent to shield a growing nexus of radical elements, emboldened under its watch. In what appears to be a coordinated effort, senior Congress leaders, including the speaker and the home minister, rushed to dismiss the murder as 'just another crime', hurriedly denying any ideological motive or connection to known extremist elements," Capt Chowta told reporters on Monday.
The speaker's remarks, made even before investigations could begin, sought to absolve individuals, who are now named as accused, he said. "Despite the PFI ban in Sept 2022, reports revealed that its members regrouped and continued operations under the SDPI banner, their political front. In coastal Karnataka, SDPI leaders openly admitted that the PFI cadre is now the SDPI cadre. The exposé revealed how they evaded arrests through tactical anonymity — no records, no names — and how remittances and logistical support from within Dakshina Kannada and beyond only strengthened their anti-national activities," the MP alleged.
Since the Congress came to power in 2023, key accused in the Praveen Nettaru case were found to be still operating within Karnataka, some even evading arrest for over a year. Mustafa Paichar, a PFI-trained arms handler and conspirator in the Nettaru murder, was arrested only in May 2024 in Hassan. Kodaje Mohammed Sherif, a senior PFI state executive, was nabbed at Delhi airport in Dec 2024, after operating from abroad. Ateeq Ahmed, who helped Paichar escape to Chennai, was arrested in Jan 2025. These arrests, all made by the NIA, not state authorities, confirm that PFI-linked elements continued to enjoy a haven in Karnataka under the Congress regime, the MP said.

BJP looks for youth to debate in favour of Emergency for ‘mock parliament'

But that's what the saffron outfit plans to do as it gears up to organise a 'mock parliament' in nine districts to mark 50 years of the Emergency between June 25 and June 27. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Though the BJP describes it as a "black chapter" in the history of Indian democracy, the party is looking for at least 7,000 youths who can stir up a debate by speaking in favour of the Emergency, which was imposed by Gandhi for 21 months — between June 25, 1975, and March 21, 1977 — citing a breakdown of the law and order situation in the country owing to massive protests by the opposition parties alleging corruption by the Congress regime. "Since it is a mock parliament, we have decided to enrol at least 40% of the youth who can speak in favour of the topic. This would serve the purpose of striking a balance during the event," UP BJP yuva morcha's state general secretary and in charge of the campaign, Varun Goyal told TOI. The BJP has decided to register at least 18,000 youths in the 18-25 age group for the event, which will see a clash of pro and anti-Emergency views. These youths will be screened by a committee of the BJP yuva morcha, and at least 80-100 people will be shortlisted for each of the nine districts — Meerut, Jhansi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Ghaziabad, Aligarh and Bareilly — where the event will be organised. However, Goyal said, the party is not able to get that many youths who can speak in favour of the Emergency. "We are somehow convincing a host of them to do so," he said, asserting that most of the youth want to speak against Gandhi's decision to impose the Emergency. He said that today's youth was guided by the present-day political dispensation, which sought to inculcate the feeling of nationalism and democracy. Analysts believe that encouraging youth to argue for the Emergency may well be part of a mock exercise where debating controversial topics from all sides fosters critical thinking and rhetorical skill. Nevertheless, experts said, by inviting young people to argue in favour of the Emergency, the BJP aims to ultimately discredit those arguments by confronting them head-on with counterpoints. This can also provide the BJP with harder ammunition to further criticise Congress while letting those arguments hang in public only to get them torn down with stronger rebuttals, say analysts.

Patil writes to CM on mining scams, BJP questions timing
Bengaluru/Raichur: Law minister HK Patil has written a detailed letter to chief minister Siddaramaiah expressing deep concern over the govt's failure to act on thousands of illegal mining cases that allegedly led to a loss of Rs 1.5 lakh crore between 2007 and 2011. In a seven-page letter dated June 18, Patil criticised the "administrative apathy" in handling these cases and called for stern action against the culprits and recovery of lost public wealth. He reminded Siddaramaiah of the 320-km foot march to Ballari in 2010 against illegal mining when the Congress was in opposition. Patil, who headed the cabinet sub-committee on illegal mining during Siddaramaiah's previous term (2013–18), noted in the letter that only 7.6% of more than 12,000 registered illegal mining cases have been investigated so far. "In just 2 per cent of these seven per cent, which means in only 0.2 per cent of the total number of cases, verdicts have come and cases have seen a conclusion," he further added. In Raichur, Patil on Saturday said, "I have brought it to the notice of the CM about what has to be done. The letter is written in the interest of the state and its people. The chief minister has seen the letter and has taken the matter seriously."
