Pooran retires from internationals
Former West Indies white-ball captain Nicholas Pooran announced his retirement from international duty on Monday.
Pooran hit 13 half-centuries in 106 Twenty20 Internationals and amassed 2,275 runs to become West Indies' leading scorer in the shortest format.
One of the world's most explosive batters, the 29-year-old smashed 149 sixes in T20 Internationals to stand fifth overall.
He served as West Indies' limited overs skipper but gave up the captaincy after their first-round exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup.
"This game we love has given and will continue to give so much - joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies," the Trinidadian said in a social media post on Monday.
"Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field... it's hard to put into words what that truly means to me.
"To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart."
Pooran last played for West Indies in their 3-0 T20 series defeat by Bangladesh in December last year, while his most recent ODI appearance came in July 2023 against Sri Lanka.
"Nicholas officially informed the leadership of his decision to retire from international cricket, bringing to a close a significant chapter in his career," Cricket West Indies said in a statement.
"His performances on the field and influence within the team have made a lasting impact on West Indies cricket."
Pooran opted to skip West Indies' ongoing T20 series against England, requesting to be rested after playing for the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League.
He is likely to remain active on the lucrative global T20 league circuit.

Hosts England face Sri Lanka in 2026 Women's T20 World Cup opener
Hosts England will kick off their 2026 Women's T20 World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston on June 12 while holders New Zealand begin their title defence against the West Indies a day later, the International Cricket Council said on Wednesday. Group 1 includes record six-times champions Australia, two-times runners-up South Africa, 2020 finalists India and Pakistan, as well as two teams from the Global Qualifier tournament. New Zealand, 2009 champions England, Sri Lanka, 2016 winners West Indies and the other two teams from the Global Qualifier are in Group 2. Shubman Gill's style of captaincy blends the fire of Virat Kohli with the ice-cool composure of Rohit Sharma but India's new test skipper will carve out his own identity as he leads them in the upcoming test series in England, Jos Buttler said on Tuesday. India named Gill as their new test captain in May, picking the 25-year-old top-order batter over pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah after Rohit quit the format. India have long recognised Gill's leadership qualities, previously naming him vice-captain in both white-ball formats, while he also had two seasons as skipper of Indian Premier League (IPL) side Gujarat Titans. 'He's a really impressive player and an impressive young man…,' Buttler, who played under Gill at Gujarat, said on the 'For the Love of Cricket' podcast. 'I feel like, on the field he's got a bit of fight about him — a bit of intensity, quite passionate. I think he'll be a mix of Kohli and Rohit. 'Kohli (was) that sort of real aggressive (character), really transformed the Indian team, in your face, up for the contest. Rohit a bit on the other side, a bit more laid back, very cool, calm, collected customer, but with that sort of fight. 'I feel like, from my time knowing Shubman so far, he'll be a bit in the middle. He's obviously learned from those two guys … but he'll be very much his own man.' Jasprit Bumrah told BCCI he did not want Test captaincy due to workload concerns India play England in a five-match test series starting on Friday at Headingley, and Buttler said Gill will be in the spotlight.
