An armyman posted in Jammu and his aide have been arrested for their alleged involvement in espionage activities linked to Pakistan's spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), a Punjab director general of police (DGP) said on Sunday. (HT Photo) Yadav said one of the accused has been identified as Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopy Fojia, resident of Dhariwal in Amritsar serving in the Indian Army in Jammu. His associate has been identified as Sahil Masih who also belongs to Dhariwal, the police chief said. In a release issued here, Yadav said that preliminary investigation revealed that Gurpreet was in direct contact with operatives of the Pakistan ISI and is suspected of sharing sensitive and confidential information via pen drives. The key ISI handler involved in the case has been identified as Rana Javed, he added. The DGP said two mobile phones containing virtual numbers, reportedly used to communicate with ISI operatives, have been recovered from the possession of both the arrested accused persons. Further investigations are underway to dismantle the broader espionage-terror network and identify all collaborators in this case, he said. Sharing more details, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Amritsar rural, Maninder Singh said Gurpreet joined the army in 2016 and systematically exploited his official position to collect, store and transmit classified military information via pen drives and discs. The espionage network was reportedly facilitated by an acquaintance identified as Arjan, a Dubai-based drug trafficker from Dhariwal, who introduced Gurpreet to ISI operatives five months ago, he said, adding that since then, Gurpreet has actively engaged in the unauthorised collection and relay of sensitive military data to the ISI using pre-decided drop locations. The SSP said in lieu of this espionage activity, Gurpreet was receiving monetary compensation through a complex financial network involving intermediary bank accounts of friends, relatives, and foreign associates to evade detection. In an intelligence-led operation, police teams arrested Gurpreet and his associate Sahil Masih, while they were attempting another handover of sensitive data, he said. He added that further investigations are in progress to unravel the wider nexus and identify additional conspirators, both domestic and foreign-based. A case under Sections 3, 5, and 9 of the Official Secrets Act and Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered at Lopoke police station in Amritsar Rural, said officials. How cops pulled child from brink of begging racket
New Delhi: A four-year-old girl was rescued from her woman kidnapper who allegedly abducted her from central Delhi's Chandni Mahal on June 18 to make her beg and later sell her off, police have said. The woman allegedly took the girl away when the child's mother was out to fetch drinking water. Police have said that they have arrested the 40-year-old woman, Barkha, and she admitted that she had planned to use the child for begging and then sell her once she grew up. After reviewing footage from 100 CCTV cameras, officers traced the girl to the woman's house in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh. Although the woman initially escaped, she was caught near Old Delhi Railway Station with the child. Police reported that on June 18, they received a complaint about the girl missing from the Chandni Mahal area. The complainant stated that around 5 pm, while his wife was collecting drinking water at their rented accommodation, their four-year-old daughter left the house with her elder sister and later disappeared. Despite extensive efforts, the child could not be located. The complainant suspected that someone may have kidnapped his daughter. Police then registered a case under section 137(2) (kidnapping) of the BNS at Chandni Mahal police station. Deputy commissioner of police (central) Nidhin Valsan formed a team under inspector Mahavir Prasad and sub-inspector Akash to catch the suspect and trace the child. "The team conducted an investigation, which involved scrutinising footage from CCTV cameras across the area to identify both the victim and the suspect. From the minute analysis of CCTV footage from various locations, the child was seen alone heading towards Delhi Gate near Sanchar Bhawan. Secret informers were activated for any information," police said. The team got a tip-off that a woman beggar had taken the girl to her village, Behta, in Barabanki. A police team was dispatched to Barabanki. Upon reaching the village, the team learned that Barkha had brought the child there but, learning that the police were looking for her, she returned to Delhi. Based on this intelligence, police were deployed in plain clothes at New Delhi Railway Station and Old Delhi Railway Station. On Saturday morning, Barkha was seen deboarding a train at Old Delhi Railway Station and trying to hide near Shanti Van red light along with the child. She was immediately caught, and the child was safely rescued from her custody. Upon interrogation, she disclosed that she had abducted the girl. The child was reunited with her parents.
