Why I sold my Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order - Reader's Feature
A reader admits that he's already sold his Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order and explains why he decided to become a scalper, and why he doesn't regret it.
I am a scalper. Not usually, and it's not my job or anything, but I have to admit that is technically what I am now. Which unfortunately means everyone hates me and I can't really argue that they're wrong. But I thought I'd tell you my story anyway and you can judge whether I'm a monster or not.
I didn't get an invite to pre-order a Nintendo Switch 2, because I wasn't on Nintendo Switch Online, but I tried my luck when they opened it up to everyone on the Nintendo website and I got lucky. I was very excited at first, especially when I realised just how lucky I'd been and that there probably wasn't going to be an easy way to pre-order again before launch.
That's when the pre-order started seeming like it was burning a hole in my pocket. I started to think about how expensive it was and how much the games were, and the fact that there wasn't really anything I was all that interested in that was out this year, other than Metroid Prime 4 – which is also on Switch 1.
I'm looking forward to playing Mario Kart World, for sure, but I began to question whether it was really worth paying over £400 for the privilege. I'm sure Donkey Kong Bananza is going to be good, but I can't say I went ape over it (sorry) and it's something I'd rather wait for reviews for. I'd say a price cut but we all know that's not going to happen.
Then there was all the talk of hidden small print that seemed to make everything connected with the Switch 2 seem that little bit worse, every time something new came out. Combine that with the fact that we had to wait three weeks or so to get UK prices made me feel that Nintendo were not on top of things.
What really put me off though was the line-up of games for the rest of the year. After Donkey Kong in July there is nothing that interests me. A Dynasty Warriors crossover and a Kirby game are absolutely bizarre things for Nintendo to put out in the first year of their new console.
The Switch 1 is over eight years old at this point and that's the best they could manage to get ready in all that time? That and that ultra cheap looking basketball game that looks like some bargain basement indie title. I get that their first party teams are all cooking on other things, but they just seem like the absolutely least interesting choices possible.
But mostly, I admit, I did it for the money. I was contemplating putting the pre-order on eBay, but I heard they were cracking down on scalpers. I mentioned it to a friend and, to my surprise, he said he'd give me £600 for the pre-order. Realising that I'd probably have difficulty selling it onliine I took him up on it, since because we're friend he knows I'm not going to scam him, and vice versa.
So there we are. I was a Switch 2 owner for just under two days. I might regret selling up when we get to launch but I don't think so. My plan now is to wait to see what other games they announce. If there's a big Christmas game that they're keeping secret, which I doubt, then I might try to get one then. But more likely I'll be looking at next Christmas, when there's more games out. So far though, I regret nothing.

Video games are great for my mental and physical wellbeing - Reader's Feature
A reader breaks down the Switch 2 launch line-up and lists the mistakes he feels Nintendo has made, from the marketing to the prices. Video gaming has often been criticised in the media, with some attributing it to the escalation of violence and gun-related crimes. Whilst it is an easy target, I want to talk about how gaming's mental health effects are positive in many more ways than they are negative. In 2014, I was diagnosed as having bipolar disorder. Basically, I have severe mood swings – from deep depression, where just getting out of bed is impossible, to extreme highs where I think I can be Super Mario and take on anything! One hobby that makes a positive difference to me is video games. Gaming has been a huge part of my life and I have just picked up the Switch 2. I also play Xbox, Apple Arcade and retro games that take me back in time to my formative and happy gaming journey. My love of Nintendo, in particular, is one that has really helped me to remain stable. Just booting up my original Nintendo Switch, and now its successor, I get a feeling of happiness and contentment as I see the Nintendo logo once more. Familiarity is important to human beings. It is about a connection. It helps us to feel safe when we recognise something that we have grown to trust. Keeping my mind active is important to my wellbeing. Games such as Brain Training, for example, have kept my mind focused with memory games being a positive force in keeping cognitive skills strong. Mario Kart World delights and excites me and makes my brain release serotonin that is important for a healthy mind. The colours, the music, the ease of play are all conducive to positive mental health. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. The introduction of GameChat has allowed me to catch up with old friends and laugh out loud together, as we battle it out in knockout games for hours on end. Laughter is such a positive release for us all, and it always makes me feel so much better. Then there are fitness games such as Ring Fit Adventure, where you can game and keep fit at the same time! Exercise is vital for physical and mental wellbeing and added to a hobby such as video gaming you can only benefit from the best of all worlds. First person shooters such as Doom Eternal help me because I can let off steam. I don't play Doom and suddenly think I must go out shooting things. It is a safe way to release tension and frustrations. I do not see the connection between that escapism and wanting to make it a reality. If I did, then if I ever reach the day where I start wanting to be a plumber and jump on squirrels in the park, I know it's the day my gaming has gone too far, and I stop playing Super Mario Bros.! Video games help educate, instruct, develop, and entertain. All of these things are vital for our mental and physical wellbeing and that applies to all ages. I am 47 years old and feel the same emotions as I did when I was just eight years old. From the moment I started gaming I can only say that it has been good for my mental health and I remain, and always will remain, grateful for that. I absolutely recommend gaming as an important tool for mental health wellbeing and recovery. More Trending Whilst it may still receive unwanted and often unwarranted attention, gaming isn't the force for bad that some would have us believe and I can only hope, that by sharing my experiences, that others will also come out and support gaming as a real force for good, now and in the future. Huge high street retailer launches 20% off closing down sale ahead of store shutting for good in weeks
A HUGE high street retailer has launched a 20 per cent off going out of business sale with just weeks left until the store shuts for good. The hugely popular town centre video game shop is due to close down in a matter of weeks it has announced. 4 4 GAME, in Festival Place, Basingstoke, suddenly announced it will be closing down next month. The retailer will be holding a 20 per cent off everything closing down sale before shutting up shop for good on August 10. GAME sells a variety of video games, consoles and pop culture merchandise. The retailer came under fire recently when it cancelled pre-orders of heavily anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 consoles. Its Basingstoke location is now due to close for good with signs seen in the window announcing the closure. No reason has been given for the retailers abrupt departure from the shopping centre. Products including popular video games and Lego sets have had their stock prices reduced. Retailer GAME, which specialises in consoles, games and accessories was acquired by Frasers Group in 2019 as part of a £52 million deal. The retailer has closed a number of locations across the UK in recent months. Signs in the window of the Basingstoke store read: "This store will cease trading on 10th August. Why are so many shops going bust? "Please shop online at A number of GAME stores have closed with some being converted into concessions within Sports Direct and other Frasers Group stores. Locals have been left disappointed by the news of the Basingstoke location's closure. Following Frasers Group acquiring GAME in 2019 significant restructuring and downsizing of the video game retailer has commenced. While plans don't indicate that the stores will disappear from the British high street completely many locations are expected to close. 4 4 Downfall of GAME Game was acquired by billionaire businessman Mike Ashley's Frasers Group in 2019 as part of a £52million deal. However, by January 2020, the retailer announced plans to close 40 of its more than 300 stores across the UK. Today, there are approximately 240 Game stores operating nationwide. This decline comes amid a significant drop in sales of physical video games, compared to Game's heyday in the early 2000s. The Digital Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA) revealed that in 2022, nearly 90 per cent of all video games sold in the UK were digital downloads. Why are retailers closing stores? RETAILERS have been feeling the squeeze since the pandemic, while shoppers are cutting back on spending due to the soaring cost of living crisis. High energy costs and a move to shopping online after the pandemic are also taking a toll, and many high street shops have struggled to keep going. However, additional costs have added further pain to an already struggling sector. The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury's hike to employer NICs from April will cost the retail sector £2.3billion. At the same time, the minimum wage will rise to £12.21 an hour from April, and the minimum wage for people aged 18-20 will rise to £10 an hour, an increase of £1.40. The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year. It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year. Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: "The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025." It comes after almost 170,000 retail workers lost their jobs in 2024. End-of-year figures compiled by the Centre for Retail Research showed the number of job losses spiked amid the collapse of major chains such as Homebase and Ted Baker. It said its latest analysis showed that a total of 169,395 retail jobs were lost in the 2024 calendar year to date. This was up 49,990 – an increase of 41.9% – compared with 2023. It is the highest annual reading since more than 200,000 jobs were lost in 2020 in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced retailers to shut their stores during lockdowns. The centre said 38 major retailers went into administration in 2024, including household names such as Lloyds Pharmacy, Homebase, The Body Shop, Carpetright and Ted Baker. Around a third of all retail job losses in 2024, 33% or 55,914 in total, resulted from administrations. Experts have said small high street shops could face a particularly challenging 2025 because of Budget tax and wage changes. Professor Bamfield has warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector. "By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer's household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020."

Love Island fans left completely baffled by 'horrendous' outfit amid villa chaos
Love Island fans were left baffled by Harry's outfit choice during Friday night's episode as he opted for a floral blazer and trousers in the blazing heat in Mallorca After last night's fallout, the drama continued on tonight's Love Island. Things got heated in last night's challenge, Look Who's Talking, as the Islanders continued to reel from the confessions. It was Harry who took centre stage over his wild words to Yasmin - but it was his outfit that had fans talking tonight. In the evening, Harry asked Helena to go for a chat on the terrace with him to smooth things over. He asked if they could still be friends, but even Helena couldn't focus on anything other than his outfit. For the night, Harry opted for a matching floral two piece - but his outfit, much like his behaviour lately, left fans and viewers less than impressed. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan penned: "Harry when you're done my nan would like her curtains back #loveisland #loveislanduk," while a second joked: "I would have rejected Harry for a chat based on that awful outfit... #LoveIsland." Another unimpressed fan said: "Harry's outfit is HORRIFIC #LoveIsland," while a fourth joked: "Harry's outfit isn't a good ad for eBay's preloved." One shocked viewer penned: "For once I agree with those girls, like what was Harry thinking with that floral outfit???" The girls were in agreement, calling the outfit disgusting, as Megan said his fashion sense was "s**t." It comes after a chaotic week for Harry, as yesterday, it was revealed that he and Yasmin had shared three kisses in the Hideaway, and tonight, Helena exclaimed she was done. 'I'm so done, all he's done is embarrass me," she told the girls. However, it wasn't just Helena who needed a chat with her partner, as Meg gave Dejon a stark warning. 'If you go in Harry's footsteps you know we'll be over, I'm not gonna be Helena, you're not getting away with it," she said. Elsewhere, Yasmin was fed up of taking the heat for the boys' actions. In a chat with Toni, she said: 'They'll go back to them [the boys]…I'm so over it…I'm so sick of always being the one to take the heat…' However, it looks like Harry may have moved on once again, and this time, it was back to Shakira. The pair coupled up on Day 2, causing Sophie to be dumped from the villa. However, things didn't work out after he became close to Helena. Shakira then went back to her original partner Ben, but the pair seem to have found their way back to each other. 'I wanted to see how you were feeling, I think initially you were number one and I f****d it," a regretful Harry told her. It comes after Shakira and Ben also had a falling out last night following her chat with new bombshell Harrison. Is the villa set for a mix up once again?
