Suspects due in court over gun possession charges
Two male suspects are expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrate's Court this week after being apprehended with two illegal firearms last week in the CBD.
The arrest came in on June 10 around 13:00, when the two suspects (aged 41 and 45) were stopped on the corner of Struben and Andries streets during patrols.
Pretoria Central SAPS spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise said the pair were taken into custody after officers searched their belongings.
'What seemed to be a daily routine in stop-and-search led to the discovery of the two firearms hidden in a backpack that the two suspects were carrying. As a result, two male suspects are behind bars after being found in possession of two firearms, namely a Model PMK-380 calibre with a magazine loaded with two live rounds,' Nkhumise said.
Another successful arrest comes after one male suspect aged 38 was spotted and stopped at the corner of Struben Street and Eskia Mphahlele Drive on June 11 at around 11:15.
A body search was conducted, and a 9mm firearm with a magazine loaded with 12 live rounds was found hidden around his waist.
Vispol Head Colonel Maboea congratulated the team led by Captain Nthuteng Mogotsi, consisting of Sergeant Matlakala, Reservist Khumalo Lebelo, and two patrollers, Fannie Raseroka and Richard Masala, on the successful arrests.
He thanked the Gauteng traffic and crime prevention wardens for their unwavering support and efforts in combatting crime in the inner city.
The recovered firearms will be sent to ballistics for further analysis to check if they were used in the commission of other crimes.
All suspects were charged with possession of unlicensed firearms with live ammunition and are expected to appear at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court.

Mooiplaats home invasion ends in fatal shooting
A home invasion in Mooiplaats, East of Pretoria, on Friday, June 20, culminated in a shooting between security guards and suspects. According to police spokesperson Johan van Dyk, the events began when a resident heard his dogs barking outside and went to investigate at around 21:30. 'The man was approached by five adult African men armed with pangas,' Van Dyk stated. The men then attacked the victim. 'The suspects also forced entry into the homes of other tenants, attacking them and robbing them of a television and a cell phone. The suspects then fled the scene on foot.' While police did not disclose the extent of the victims' injuries, social media posts suggested they were severe. According to Van Dyk, private security in the area tracked the suspects into nearby bushes. 'Seeing that they were surrounded, the suspects allegedly attacked the security guards with the pangas. The guards retaliated, shooting two of the suspects. One died at the scene, while the other was rushed to a nearby hospital.' Van Dyk confirmed that police are investigating a case of house robbery, murder, possession of stolen property, and possession of house break-in tools. Pretoria's Operation Shanela: 297 arrested in major crime crackdown
Multi-disciplinary efforts involving police, other government departments, and community policing forums led to the arrest of nearly 300 individuals as part of ongoing initiatives to combat crime in Pretoria this weekend. A coalition of various crime-fighting organisations resulted in the apprehension of 297 suspects for a range of offences, including murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, bribery, and rape, according to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk. Captain van Dyk stated that Saturday's Operation Shanela specifically targeted the Hercules and Pretoria West policing precincts. 'A roadblock with two tactical teams was deployed across the Hercules and Pretoria West areas, resulting in the detention of 33 undocumented foreign nationals, who are currently being processed by immigration authorities,' he explained. During the operation, 544 individuals and 291 vehicles were searched, leading to 14 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol. 'Targeted patrols were conducted at 41 identified crime hotspots, resulting in further arrests and the issuance of fines. This included one person arrested for public drinking, interfering with police duties, and resisting arrest, as well as one suspect found in possession of three zip-lock bags containing crystal meth,' van Dyk added. Traffic enforcement units issued 19 AARTO infringement notices, totalling R13,500 in fines. Liquor compliance inspections were carried out at 12 establishments, resulting in the closure of seven for non-compliance. A total of 272,310 ml of alcohol and 17 cartons of illegal cigarettes were confiscated. The breakdown of other arrests included: – Gender-based violence-related offences: 1 – Murder: 1 – Attempted murder: 1 – Armed robbery: 4 – Kidnapping: 6 – Bribery: 2 – Rape: 8 The operation involved collaboration among various authorities, including SAPS, the Department of Home Affairs, the Tshwane Metro Police Department, Gauteng Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, the Department of Correctional Services, the Department of Community Safety, and representatives from local Community Policing Forums. SAPS District Commissioner of Tshwane, Major-General Samuel Thine, expressed gratitude to all participating stakeholders for their ongoing cooperation and commitment to enhancing community safety. He emphasised that such disruptive crime-combatting operations will continue across Tshwane to maintain and restore law and order. Mozambican kidnapping kingpin shot, killed in police op
What started as a search for a kidnapped Pretoria West businessman ended in the fatal shooting of a 40-year-old Mozambican kidnapping kingpin in Fourways, Johannesburg, by police this week. According to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the anti-kidnapping task team were tracing a kidnapped Pakistani national when their search led them to a residential complex in Carlswald, Midrand. 'They seized a Mercedes Benz and a silver Pajero and arrested two kidnappers,' Mathe said. 'Police proceeded to Fourways where the task team announced their arrival and a shoot-out ensued. One suspect was fatally wounded.' Mathe said that, upon further investigation, it was discovered that the deceased was 40-year-old Mauro Mucambe Junior, who is wanted in Mozambique, where he has been linked to several kidnappings. 'His warrant of arrest was issued by Maputo Police in August 2024. One unlicensed firearm used by the fatally wounded fugitive of justice was seized including 10 rounds of ammunition. Four cellphones and four bank cards have also been seized.' The kidnapped Pakistani businessman is still missing and a ransom has been demanded from the family, according to Mathe. 'We have full faith and confidence in the work of the anti-kidnapping task team to rescue the kidnapped businessman,' Mathe said. 'Since January 2024 to date, the team has arrested more than 170 criminals involved in kidnappings for ransom. More than R1.2 million has been recovered. More than 100 victims were rescued mainly in Gauteng and more than 40 vehicles used in kidnapping crimes were also seized by the team. 'The anti-kidnapping task team recently registered a breakthrough in the Olorato Mongale murder case where they led the tracing operation of Philangenkosi Makhanya.
