Beth Mead urges England to feed off the pressure of European title defence
Beth Mead has challenged England to use pressure as fuel when they kick off their European title defence against France. The Lionesses squad travelling to Switzerland this summer is very different from the one that lifted the trophy on home soil at Euro 2022. Seven members of Sarina Wiegman's group have never played in a major tournament and England will be defending a major title for the first time. 'There's a little bit of pressure that comes with it but I think it's a free adrenaline injection, pump it into your veins,' said forward Mead, who won the Golden Boot after scoring six goals at the 2022 Euros, where she was also named player of the tournament. 'We've been there, we've done it, we need to bottle that energy up and (bring) what we brought last time. It's a completely different tournament and teams look very different but we know what we're about and we've got to concentrate on being the best version of ourselves.' England face Jamaica in a Leicester send-off on June 29 before travelling to their Switzerland base in Zurich. They kick off their title defence against France on July 5, then take on 2017 champions the Netherlands. The group stage concludes in St Gallen against Wales, who have qualified for the first major tournament in their history. Mead is relieved team-building activities this time around have not included a camping trip – a memorable Lionesses excursion under Phil Neville in 2019. 'I think I slept two hours and then (got woken up) by the geese around the complex,' Mead recalls. 'That wasn't my favourite team-building activity. I think Toni Duggan snuck back into the hotel for the night instead.' The group did host a movie night at their last camp – the thriller Sinners, starring Bournemouth minority owner Michael B Jordan – and this time opted for a graffiti painting session to, Mead notes, 'express yourself' and 'show how bad we all are at art'. Much has also changed in Mead's personal and professional life since lifting the trophy in 2022 – her mother, June, died from ovarian cancer the following winter, shortly after Mead was named Sports Personality of the Year. This year, she lifted the Champions League trophy alongside her Arsenal team-mates for the first time. 'I feel like I'm in a good place individually,' Mead added. 'I know I've got an amazing team around me. I've got very good connections with players in the team. 'All I can do is do my best. We can all only do our best and take our chances when we're given them. 'I'd like to think I've got quite a good amount of experience to head into the tournament and I've played against a lot of the teams that we're going to come up against and hopefully that experience can help within the game. 'But I'm excited. I'm a little bit older than I was last time, but it doesn't take the excitement away and it still feels like a first tournament even though I've obviously been very lucky to go to quite a few. 'This is a new challenge, new competition, very different teams. I can't wait to get started.'

Scotland Women appoint two assistant coaches ahead of summer test matches
Ross Miller and Steve Shingler have been appointed assistant coaches for the Scotland Women's team, ahead of this summer's test matches against Italy and Ireland, and the 2025 Rugby World Cup in England. Ross Miller returns to the national setup as Assistant Coach (forwards), replacing Fraser Brown, who concluded his consultancy role with the team at the end of the 2025 Guinness Women's Six Nations. A former Melrose player, Miller brings continuity and familiarity to the squad, having previously worked with the team during the 2021 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand (played in 2022). Most recently, Miller led the Scotland Men U18 team at the Six Nations Festival in April. He rejoined the women's programme at the start of the current pre-season training block this month. Joining Miller is Steve Shingler, who takes on the role of Assistant Coach (attack). He will replace Matt Banahan, who has chosen to move on to another coaching opportunity. Shingler arrives on secondment from PWR side Trailfinders Women, where he has served as Assistant Coach for the past season. A former professional player, Shingler brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience, having represented Scarlets, London Irish, Cardiff, Mont-de-Marsan, and Ealing Trailfinders across a distinguished career as a fly-half and centre. Scotland Women Head Coach, Bryan Easson said: 'I'd like to thank Matt for his contribution to the team, there is no doubt that our attack has kicked on in the two years he has been with us. Whilst it's disappointing that he won't be with us for the Rugby World Cup, we respect his decision in choosing an opportunity that is closer to home and wish him all the very best. 'This does now present an exciting opportunity to reset and refresh our coaching team. We're very grateful to Trailfinders Women for working with us to bring Steve into our environment. 'We welcomed Steve into camp during this year's Six Nations and we were really impressed by him then. We have several players at Trailfinders, including some of our key attacking players, who have a fantastic relationship with him already and know what he's about which will give us a smooth transition. 'Ross has bedded back in with us really well, we've had a brilliant few weeks as a group with him so far. We've worked together for a long time, and he did a great job with us at the last Rugby World Cup. I think he's a brilliant addition to the group, he knows the players and the players know him which helps too.' On his move, Matt Banahan said: 'I loved my time with Scotland, and I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to coach at international level, but the chance to take on a new coaching role closer to home was too good to turn down. 'I'm so proud of what the team has achieved in these last two years, especially their WXV2 title win in 2023. This is a really special group, and I have loved getting to know them as players and people. I wish the team all the very best at the Rugby World Cup and everything else in the future.' 'Jackson needs to go' - your thoughts on Chelsea's defeat

As for Jackson, he's just not up to this Poor performance all round. Seemed that there was a lack of any strategy going forward. Sanchez worried me every time he had the ball at his feet. Good shot-stopper but not at all comfortable when he has time to think. Jackson an absolute disgrace - too prone to doing something stupid and letting the team First and foremost, Jackson needs to go. He is a liability to the club. Secondly, something seriously needs to be sorted out with the defence. It's an absolute shambles. Thirdly, what is the point of only playing James for 50% of each match when he is clearly making an impact on the match. And lastly, how much longer are the owners going to put up with Maresca's inability to read the game and act accordingly?Steve: Can't see what all the fuss is about. Chelsea are virtually on their holidays after a long season. Flamengo are midway through their season playing in a climate they enjoy. If the roles were reversed and the tournament was being played in favour of the European teams, then we'd see different After a good first half, we lost our way in the second half. Our opponents appeared to be more motivated and took their opportunities well. Perhaps it's a case of one tournament too many. Having already played a full season, the players need a An inept, dreadful performance against a spirited Flamengo side who were made to look good by Chelsea's performance. Jackson needs a good long spell out of the team.
