Argonauts drop to 0-2 after 29-19 loss to Stampeders
Vernon Adams Jr. and Dedrick Mills scored fourth-quarter touchdowns to lead the unbeaten Calgary Stampeders past the winless Toronto Argonauts 29-19 on a breezy Saturday afternoon.

Adams Jr.'s eight-yard scamper at 7:43 put Calgary ahead 26-11. It came after Lirim Hajrullahu's 47-yard field goal at 5:08 cut Toronto's deficit to 19-11.

Mills put Calgary ahead 19-8 with a one-yard scoring run at 1:19. Both Adams Jr. and Mills capped 70-yard scoring drives.

Toronto's Nick Arbuckle made it interesting with a 46-yard touchdown pass to Damonte Coxie at 9:50. Then the '24 Grey Cup MVP ran in for the two-point convert to cut Calgary's lead to 26-19.

But Rene Paredes cemented the win for Calgary (2-0) with a 23-yard field goal at 13:45. A BMO Field gathering of 17,902 watched the Argos (0-2) raise their Grey Cup banner before the opening kickoff.

Calgary earned the victory despite losing all-star receiver Reggie Begelton (knee). Begelton went down on the second play from scrimmage and needed help to leave the field.

Begelton later returned to the Stampeders sidelines on crutches and ice taped to his right knee.

Toronto lost middle linebacker Wynton McManis (knee) and starting running back Deonta McMahon (ankle) to first-half injuries.

Paredes' 23-yard field goal into the wind at 5:38 gave Calgary a 12-4 lead. Haggerty's 83-yard punt single at 6:32 pulled Toronto to within 12-5.

Hajrullahu's 45-yard field goal to end the second quarter cut Calgary's halftime lead to 9-4. It followed a successful pass-interference challenge by Argos head coach Ryan Dinwiddie that put the ball at the Stampeders' 45-yard line with 13 seconds to play.

Both offences struggled establishing the run in the first half as Toronto had just 28 yards, three more than the Stamps. And neither unit was able to navigate effectively with or against the wind.

Greene staked Calgary to a 9-1 lead with a 40-yard pick-six at 8:56. He stepped in front of Nick Arbuckle's pass for David Ungerer III and ran untouched into the end zone.

The son of Darryl Sutter, who was twice head coach of the Flames and once the team's GM, moved into the coaching ranks last season after appearing in 1,090 AHL games and 60 NHL games. 'This is an organization that I am very familiar with having history as both a player and coach,' Brett Sutter said Friday in a statement. 'Having spent a lot of time at this level, I understand the role in developing players and have firsthand knowledge of what a great group we have here to work with. I can't wait to get started.' The 38-year-old from Viking, Alta., was drafted by the Flames in the sixth round (179th overall) in 2005. He scored in his NHL debut with the Flames on Dec. 23, 2008. Sutter ranks fourth in all-time AHL games and recorded 198 goals, 265 assists and 893 penalty minutes. He had two goals and eight assists in the NHL with stints with Calgary, the Minnesota Wild and Carolina Hurricanes. 'We feel that Brett is the right coach to continue working with our young players, and we are excited to be able to have him guide their development,' said Wranglers GM and Flames assistant general manager Brad Pascall. 'Brett's knowledge of our players, years of experience at this level and familiarity with our organization made this a great fit for both sides.' Previous Wranglers head coach Trent Cull was promoted to assistant coach of the Flames. Darryl Sutter was head coach of the Flames from 2002 to 2006, and 2020 to 2023. They've moved into third place in PCL standings with a 5-3-2 record. On Saturday, Cavalry will go up against Pacific FC, who haven't been in very good form of late, and are 2-7-2 this season. However, head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. says you can't take any team in this league lightly. 'It's a 90-minute game of football and anything can happen,' he said. 'Whether the way we play, or whether that's the environmental conditions that are coming, we can't have any excuses.' 'It's all about how we approach the opponent, and nullify their strengths, expose any weaknesses and doubts that they have. But that comes down to what we do as a collective.' Collective leadership After losing leaders Daan Klomp to RAAL La Louviere in the Belgian pro league and the retirement of Charlie Trafford, no one knew where the leadership was going to come from. Forward Nicolas Wahling says it's been a collective effort. 'That's made space for other people to step up,' he said. 'I think the leadership that makes this locker room special isn't just on one or two guys, it's spread on multiple shoulders. We have just great character in the locker room and great character on the pitch.' Going for 10 Cavalry will try to go unbeaten in 10 games on Saturday – but that's not the club record. The team had a 13-game unbeaten streak in 2022. Wheeldon Jr. says he doesn't even want to think about that. 'Just focus on the next game,' he said. 'The next play is always the most important.' 'Records will always be written after the fact, so I's just up to us to play Pacific the best we possibly can.' Saturday's game between Cavalry and Pacific is at 2:30 p.m. at ATCO Field.
