Connecting bridge: on Kashmir, India and the Chenab Rail Bridge

The Hindu11-06-2025

'Kashmir to Kanniyakumari' is a figurative expression to denote the geographical expanse of India, from its northernmost point to its southern tip, and for the first time in history these are connected by rail. With the inauguration of the 272-kilometre Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project which has been 28 years in the making, the Kashmir Valley has been connected to the national rail network. The tough, unsurmountable topography of the Himalayas challenged the engineering capabilities of the Indian Railways, but it has come out with flying colours. The engineering marvel, the Chenab Rail Bridge, that stands 35 metres higher than the Eiffel Tower, is the world's highest railway arch bridge at 359 metres above the riverbed. Spanning 1,315 m, it will endure wind speeds of up to 260 km per hour and has been built to last 120 years. Nearby, the Anji Khad Bridge, rises boldly across the rugged terrain as India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. Towering 331 m above the riverbed and stretching 725 m across, it is anchored by 96 high-tensile cables; 8,200 metric tonnes of structural steel went into its construction. Built at a cost of ₹43,780 crore, the USBRL link witnessed drilling of mountains to set up 36 tunnels that span 119 kilometres and 943 bridges through ridges and mountain passes.
Kashmir's decades of geographical isolation have finally come to an end. The Vande Bharat Express between Srinagar in the Kashmir region and Katra in the Jammu region, which was also flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cuts the surface journey to three hours between the two points. Later this year, a scheduled direct train service between the national capital New Delhi and Srinagar will allow commuters to touch base in just 13 hours compared to over 24 hours in the past. The Vande Bharat Express, a long-distance high-speed service, is bound to end the psychological barriers, multiply the development dividend and act as a game changer for the economy of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). The train service has brought renewed hope to the region not long after the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025 pushed India and Pakistan to a short conflict. India's 'Operation Sindoor', against terror infrastructure across the border, saw Pakistan ending the ceasefire agreement and targeting civilians, leaving 18 dead and over 1,500 houses damaged. While inaugurating the train service in Katra, Mr. Modi rightly described the rail link as 'a symbol of a new, empowered J&K'. The bridge will go a long way to bring the people of Kashmir closer to the rest of India.

Tharoor praises PM: Shashi calls Modi 'prime asset'; hails his 'energy, dynamism and willingness to engage'

Shashi Tharoor with PM Modi. (IANS photo) NEW DELHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Monday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi , saying his energy, dynamism and willingness to engage remains a 'prime asset' for India globally. These remarks could strain his relationship with Congress party leadership. Tharoor made these comments in an article in the Hindu and it comes at a time when Congress has been critical of PM Modi government's foreign policy decisions. The party has alleged that Indian diplomacy is being 'shattered' and the country stands 'isolated' globally. Tharoor's supportive stance towards the PM appears to conflict with his party's position, potentially widening existing rifts between him and Congress leadership. Tharoor acknowledged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vigour and diplomatic engagement remain valuable for India internationally, though requiring additional support. These comments, made on Monday, might create tension within his party and further strain his relationship with its leadership. The timing of Tharoor's commendation is notable, as it comes when the Congress has consistently criticised the Modi government's foreign policy, claiming that Indian diplomacy is deteriorating and the nation faces international isolation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 40세 미만이라면 이 매혹적인 게임을 하지 마세요 경복의 바다 게임 플레이 Undo In his article, Tharoor highlighted that the diplomatic efforts following 'Operation Sindoor' demonstrated national unity and successful communication. The Prime Minister's Office shared Tharoor's article on X, noting "Lok Sabha MP and former Union Minister Dr. Shashi Tharoor writes- Lessons from Operation Sindoor's global outreach." The BJP criticised the Congress regarding Tharoor's article, suggesting it contradicted Rahul Gandhi's position. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari commented on X about Tharoor's recognition of PM Modi's international engagement benefiting India. Tharoor's article emphasised that "Prime Minister Narendra Modi's energy, dynamism and willingness to engage remains a prime asset for India on the global stage but deserves greater backing." He noted that the diplomatic response to 'Operation Sindoor' demonstrated India's ability to effectively communicate its position internationally when united. Tharoor had led a multi-party delegation to various countries to present India's position following the Pahalgam incident.

DRDO offers 28 indigenous weapon systems to Army for emergency procurement

The Defence Research and Development Organisation has offered 28 of its designed and developed weapon systems to the three services for emergency procurement. This comes at a time when the indigenous weapons performed well during India's military retaliation, Operation Sindoor, against the Pahalgam terror attack. The Defence Forces have been allowed to buy new weapons and replenish the stocks of existing weapons by the Centre under the emergency procurement powers. Under these powers, they can buy hardware up to Rs 300 crore for a single product. "The premier defence research agency has submitted the list to the defence ministry and includes rockets, air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground missiles, laser-guided bombs, torpedoes, shoulder-fired air defence and anti-tank missiles, helicopter-launched and ground-launched Nag missiles, Rudram anti-radiation missiles, Naval anti-ship missiles and grenades," defence officials told ANI. "The long list of weapon systems provided by the DRDO also lists the vendors who produce them and the number that the defence forces can procure in the next six months to one year," the sources said. The DRDO has also listed the names of the Production agencies for its various products from which the forces can source these items. For example, the Pinaka rockets can be acquired from Solar Defence and Aerodpace Limited, while Bharat Dynamics Limited is the source for multiple pieces of equipment in the list. The forces have also been offered the Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missiles, Very Short-Range Air Defence System, Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons, long-range Glide Bomb, and Advanced Light-Weight Torpedo, along with ammunition for the 155 mm artillery guns. The forces have been given the option to order from a list of 28 different pieces of equipment, including 14 for the Indian Army, 8 for the Indian Navy, and 6 for the Indian Air Force. The Indian Air Force is also acquiring the SAAW smart ammunition as part of a proposal being considered by the Defence Ministry, which is likely to come up for discussion soon. The DRDO has been the main developer of weapons in the Indian system, and its BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, MRSAM air-edge fence missile systems, and Akash air-edge fence systems have performed very well in defeating Pakistani attacks during Op Sindoor. The DRDO contribution or the offer of weapon systems readily available for the forces to use within one year is much higher than what was offered during the conflict with China, when not many systems were ready to be offered to the forces.
