Alicante: In a sensational display of rising talent and determination, the UAE Junior Badminton Team etched their name in history by securing gold and silver medals in both men's and women's Singles at the Spanish International U19 Championship, which concluded in Alicante.
This remarkable feat propelled the UAE to the top of the overall medal tally, ahead of badminton powerhouses such as Germany, Thailand, and Denmark.
In the Boys' Singles U19, Riyan Malhan, who just turned 15, clinched gold after a series of stunning victories over higher-ranked and older opponents.
His compatriot, Adam Jeslin, who is yet to turn 15, showcased equal resilience and skill to earn the Silver, making it a clean sweep for the UAE.
In the women's singles U-19, the top honors went to Prakriti Bharath, who lived up to her second seeding with an emphatic, undefeated run. She overcame her teammate Mysha Omer in the finals, who fought valiantly to bring home the silver.
Adding to the medal count, the new pairing of Jeslin and Omer brought home a well-earned bronze in the mixed doubles category.
The duo stunned the second-seeded German pair in an early round, before bowing out in the semi-finals to the eventual champions from Thailand.
They secured two gold medals in the singles events, with Malhan triumphing in the boys' singles and Prakriti claiming the top spot in the girls' singles.
Adding to the tally were two silver medals: Jeslin finished as runner-up in the boys' singles, while Omer earned silver in the girls' singles.

City off to winning start, Ramos gives Inter scare in CWC draw

The 39-year-old Spanish great Sergio Ramos scored as Monterrey held Inter Milan 1-1 in a hard-fought FIFA Club World Cup Group E opener in Pasadena on Tuesday. Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez scored a well-worked equaliser to cancel out Ramos's opener for the Mexican side in front of 40,311 fans at the Rose Bowl. Inter, playing their first game since being thrashed 5-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, were left ruing their failure to turn their dominance of possession and territory into goals. But the draw was a boost for Ramos and Monterrey, who face Argentina's River Plate in their next game on Saturday. "When you don't get all three points you're never entirely happy," Ramos, the former Spain and Real Madrid defender, said. "But one point is better than no point. They were a tough opponent and have just played in the final of the Champions League. We were a little bit nervous but in the second half we stayed organised and kept the ball better. "Now we need to think about the next game." Inter coach Cristian Chivu said his team had struggled to break down a Monterrey team who sat deep for long periods. "We played well in the first half even though we went behind," Chivu said. "We could have attacked better in the second half. It's not easy to play against a very low block." Chivu, in his first match in charge after the departure of Simone Inzaghi, denied the Champions League finalists had underestimated the Mexicans. "We respect every team we play and we knew what kind of team they were, we tried to do our best," he said. "Sometimes you get the best out of it, sometimes you don't. We created a lot of chances. Football's not won on paper." The Italians were in complete control almost from the kick-off, Benjamin Pavard the first to threaten with an eighth-minute shot that flew over the bar. Matteo Darmian should have done better in the 22nd minute but shot over after clever work down the left from Nicolo Barella. Yet despite the early onslaught, Inter were rocked in the 25th minute when Monterrey scored from one of their few forays into the Italians' half. Midfielder Oliver Torres swung a corner in from the right and Ramos -- who had lost Francesco Acerbi on the edge of the six-yard box -- steered his header into the bottom corner. Inter were soon back on the offensive and only a point-blank save by Monterrey goalkeeper Esteban Andrada from Sebastiano Esposito prevented an equaliser. Martinez also went close after 36 minutes, and Inter had a strong penalty appeal when Pavard's header struck Ramos on the arm inside the area. VAR found in favor of Ramos and Monterrey escaped. Three minutes later Inter drew level with a wonderfully worked free-kick routine. Albanian international Kristjan Asllani shaped to shoot from 25 yards out but instead flighted a delicate chip behind the Monterrey defence. Brazilian international Carlos Augusto timed his run to perfection and squared into the path of Martinez, who tapped in for 1-1. Monterrey almost regained the lead against the run of play on 64 minutes, Sergio Canales unleashing a low shot that cannoned off the post. Inter had a Martinez goal ruled out for offside moments later as the Italians continued to threaten. But it was Monterrey who came closest to grabbing a winner in stoppage time when Colombian midfielder Nelson Deossa got behind the Inter defence but could only shoot into the side netting. Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan HD had targeted their Group F opener as their best chance to get a win on the board at the Club World Cup, with Brazil's Fluminense and German side Borussia Dortmund expected to advance from Group F. South Africa's Sundowns took all three points with a 1-0 win over the South Koreans and went top of the group after Fluminense drew 0-0 with Dortmund. African and Asian teams are not expected to make much of an impact at the new-look 32-team Club World Cup so points are like gold dust for the likes of the Sundowns and Ulsan. Miguel Cardoso, Mamelodi Sundowns coach, said: "We prepared tactically and strategically very well, and then we found a commitment between everybody. I think it was clear we made a very wonderful first half. It was important that we could keep the pace and not stray from the game plan in the second half, so that we could score a second goal that for little details or little centimetres, we could not do.' Kim Pan-gon, Ulsan HD head coach, said: "We had targeted this game to win because we understand the other two teams in the group, Fluminense and Borussia Dortmund, are favourites. Our players gave their best efforts in this game and we're very proud of their efforts. Now we need to recover quickly for the next game.'

Palmeiras held by Porto as goal-keeper Ramos excels; Cunha, Jesus on target as Botafogo silence Sounders

Palmeiras and Porto played out a 0-0 draw in their Group A opener of the Club World Cup at the MetLife Stadium on Sunday, with Porto's stand-in goalkeeper Claudio Ramos delivering a stellar performance to frustrate the Brazilian side. Ramos, deputising for injured captain Diego Costa, produced a string of saves to deny Palmeiras, who dominated the contest but were unable to find a breakthrough. The substitute keeper's heroics ensured Porto left with a valuable point as all four teams in Group A remain level after Lionel Messi's Inter Miami and Egypt's Al Ahly also drew 0-0 on Saturday. Palmeiras nearly grabbed a winner in the dying moments when Murilo's header struck the post, adding to their growing frustration. Speaking to DAZN after the match, Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira praised his side's efforts but rued missed opportunities. 'I think it was a well-balanced game where we had the best chances, but football is incredible. Porto's best player was their substitute goalkeeper, who made four or five incredible saves to frustrate us,' he said. Ramos' standout moment came in first-half stoppage time when he made three successive saves. Estevao and Mauricio were denied from close range before Richard Rios' follow-up shot was cleared off the line by a defender. The 32-year-old keeper stepped up admirably after Costa was sidelined with a leg muscle injury sustained in training last week. Palmeiras, led by their young attacking duo of Vitor Roque and Estevao, soon to be joining Premier League's Chelsea, were the more threatening side throughout the match, excelling in quick transitions and displaying incisive build-up play. However, Porto's defence held firm, with Ramos and his backline soaking up pressure. Porto, meanwhile, looked to exploit high balls to towering Spanish striker Samu Aghehowa and nearly benefited from a Palmeiras error in the 20th minute. Felipe Anderson tried to challenge Martim Fernandes in a high ball lifted over Palmeiras´ box but he sliced his header and almost scored an own goal, denied with a brilliant one-handed save by keeper Weverton to avert disaster. With all teams level on one point, Group A remains wide open as Palmeiras prepare to face Al Ahly and Porto take on Inter Miami in the next round of fixtures on Thursday. Meanwhile, Jair Cunha and Igor Jesus scored in the first half and Botafogo beat the Seattle Sounders 2-1 at the Club World Cup on Sunday night. Botafogo opened the scoring 28 minutes in as Cunha headed in a pass from Alex Telles. A contentious yellow card to Nouhou Tolo led to a free kick just beyond the corner of the penalty area. Sounders players felt the call was unfair as there had been some unobserved jostling between Tolo and Artur before Tolo shoved his opponent to the ground. Before a crowd of 30,151 at Lumen Field, Botafogo doubled the lead in the first half's final minutes with another headed goal. Vitinho connected with his 24-year-old star teammate Igor Jesus, who sent a powerful header to the bottom corner. The Sounders played better in the second half, buoyed by their energetic subs. Four minutes after coming into the match, Paul Rothrock provided the assist for Cristian Roldan's header in the 75th minute that deflected off Jesus. The Sounders had two shots on target in a row in the final 30 seconds of stoppage time to try to tie the score, but the first was well blocked by a defender before John smothered Rothrock's attempt. Seattle will now have to try to win points off Group B powers Atlético Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain to avoid group stage elimination. Botafogo played good defense to hold onto its lead and is second in Group B on goal difference. 'Obviously, they're a great team, and they put us under pressure in moments, but we matched them. The difference in the first half was just quality and a couple of key moments... I think if you looked at the statistics, you would say that Sounders were in a good spot, but obviously everything is the score line, and we couldn't find that second goal.' - Seattle Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer Agencies

Maria crowned first Queen's Club women's champion in 52 years

German qualifier Tatjana Maria capped an incredible week in London as she defeated American eighth seed Amanda Anisimova 6-3 6-4 on Sunday to become the first woman to win a title at Queen's Club in over half a century. The victory marked the end of an extraordinary nine-day stretch for the mother-of-two, ranked 86 in the world, having stunned second seed and Australian Open champion Madison Keys in the previous round. The 37-year-old becomes the oldest player to claim a WTA title since Serena Williams in Auckland 2020. She dropped only one set en route to the title and her dream run also included victories over Kazakh fourth seed Elena Rybakina and Czech sixth seed Karolina Muchova. Maria dominated Anismova with big serves and earned an early break in the first set. She won 12 points in a row as she raced to a 4-1 lead and then held off a brief Anisimova fightback to close out the set. Maria carried her momentum into the second as she again surged into a 4-1 lead. Her seventh ace of the match helped her move up 5-3, and she served out the match two games later to clinch her first title in over two years. "A dream come true. (When) I came here, I was never thinking I could hold the trophy at the end. When we arrived my little girl said 'wow that's a nice trophy, so big' and I said 'OK let's go for it I will try to win it'," Maria said. "In the end I've won it, it's incredible. So happy. Everything is possible if you believe in it. You go your way, doesn't matter which it is but you have to keep going. I want to show this to my kids and hopefully they are proud. It's amazing." Maria threw her arms up as she watched Anisimova's forehand sail wide on match point, before both players shared an affectionate embrace at the net. "I wouldn't be surprised if we see you in the Wimbledon final because you really had me running out there today," Anisimova said. Having started the week as world number 86, Maria is projected to move up to world number 43 when the new rankings are released on Monday. The Wimbledon warm-up event at Queen's welcomed back female competitors for the first time since 1973, when the Soviet Union's Olga Morozova won the title. Wimbledon runs from June 30 to July 13.
