Coldplay to re-release nine albums on records made from recycled plastic battles

Coldplay are set to reissue nine of their albums on records made from recycled plastic bottles.
The Viva la Vida band are continuing their environmental crusade by reissuing their material on EcoRecord LPs - which are claimed to reduce carbon emissions during the manufacturing process by 85 per cent when compared to traditional vinyl production.
Jen Ivory, managing director of Coldplay's record label Parlophone, said: "We are incredibly proud to partner with artists such as Coldplay who share our commitment to a more sustainable future for music.
"The shift to EcoRecord LP for their releases is a testament to what's possible when innovation meets intention.
"It's not just about a new product, it's about pioneering manufacturing that significantly reduces environmental impact, providing fans with the same high-quality audio experience while setting a new standard for physical music production."
The band are re-issuing their debut album Parachutes (2000), A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), X+Y (2005), Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008), Mylo Xyloto (2011), Ghost Stories (2014), A Head Full of Dreams (2015), Everyday Life (2019) and Music of the Spheres (2021) in an eco-friendly manner.
The LPs are made up of around nine recycled bottles, which are cleaned and process into small pellets before being moulded into records.
Coldplay's most recent album - 2024's Moon Music - has already been released on an EcoRecord LP.
The Clocks band are attempting to tour in an environmentally friendly way but frontman Chris Martin previously admitted there is still "quite a long way to go" to find a fully eco-friendly way to perform around the world.
The 48-year-old singer told BBC Radio 2 in 2021: "We've been working with some amazing brands to see how we can cut down as much of the environmental impact as possible.
"We still have quite a long way to go. But we've already come quite a long way."
Coldplay teamed up with direct air capture pioneers Climeworks to ensure that their Music of the Spheres World Tour had a net-zero carbon footprint.
They said in a statement: "Playing live and finding connection with people is ultimately why we exist as a band. We've been planning this tour for years, and we're super excited to play songs from across our whole time together.
"At the same time, we're very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis.
"So we've spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour's potential to push things forward.
"We won't get everything right, but we're committed to doing everything we can and sharing what we learn. It's a work in progress and we're really grateful for the help we've had so far."

Muhamad Ali is iconic. Few wear that tag. But there are two clear images of the greatest ever fighter. One is of an athlete so supreme, his white shorts dancing around the ring like a matador's cape. His black boots moving so fast that they blur in the swirl of speed; back, forward, side to side, circling around an opponent like a shark weighing up its prey. His gloved hands and arms moving like a hose in a swimming pool, picking off his rival with a pinpoint accuracy often displayed by master archers or dart champions. 'Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, your hands can't hit what your eyes can't see.' Could there ever have been a more succinct description? Then there is the second image of the king of the ring. That of an older man whose hands, that once danced like lightning through the air, now trembled with their own quiet rhythm, as they succumbed to Parkinson's disease. Although his eyes still held the fire of a champion, the body that would once float like a butterfly, now trembled and slowed through the effects of the cruel degenerative disease called Parkinson's. The statesman, who transformed from the young man that once cussed his opponents with his legendary 'boxing poetry', finished his precious life spreading messages of hope and optimism, despite his crippling disease. In Coldplay's beautiful song Everglow, Ali says in his own recorded voice: 'God is watching me — God is. God don't praise me because I beat Joe Frazier, God don't give nothin' about Joe Frazier. God don't care nothin' about England or America as far as real wealth . . . it's all His, He wants to know how do we treat each other? How do we help each other? So, I'm going to dedicate my life to using my name and popularity to helping charities, helping people, uniting people. People bombing each other because of religious beliefs. We need somebody in the world to help us all make peace. So, when I die — if there's a heaven — I'm gonna see it.' If only our world listened to these words today. Boxing has been a lifelong passion to me. From Muhammad Ali to Rocky Balboa, I would hit the punching bag and speed ball, skip rope and do push-ups and sit-ups in mum and dad's garage. The art of boxing was the closest way I could replicate the art of batting. When I wasn't in the cricket nets I would be in my friend, mentor and trainer, Steve Smith's gym banging the focus mitts and bags, and training like a boxer. Not only did this get me very fit, but it helped me maintain focus on my goals. In batting and boxing, you need a strong technique of attack and defence, sharp concentration, confidence, fluid foot work and fast hands. You must understand your opponent, face your own fears, as there is nowhere to hide in the ring or on a cricket field. When I first entered coaching, one of my first appointments at the WACA was another great friend and lifelong martial artist, Justin Boylan, who would train our players in the art of boxing, for all the reasons mentioned above. In 2008, I met former Australian boxing champion Ray Fazio. That year, Ray directed the autobiographical drama film Two Fists One Heart, a movie depicting his boxing journey and heritage growing up in Western Australia. When I was invited to watch the filming at Challenge Stadium, I was taken by Ray's athletic prowess, passion and energy, which later converted to his entrepreneurial and inventor spirit. Through his vision I purchased one of his inventions — the Boxmaster (now Fightmaster) machine — that sits in my gym at home. Unbeknown to me, the Fightmaster is not only helping people like me stay fit and mobile, but it is also helping fight Parkinson's disease. Businessman and philanthropist Denis McInerney, a friend of Ray and I, was talking me through this incredible success story earlier in the week. Through Ray and Denis, I spoke with the inspirational Professor David Blacker, a neurologist living with Parkinson's, who is still able to play golf and practice yoga. I then met Steve Arnott, the CEO of the Perron Institute here in Perth this week. Listening to the four of them talk through the serious topic of Parkinson' disease is both hilarious and inspiring. Denis affectionately calls Ray, the 'Northbridge (an inner city Perth suburb) Identity come good', Ray refers to Denis as 'The Connector', while Steve describes Ray and David as the 'Odd Couple'. As Steve says: 'People with different backgrounds often make the best partners because they come up with the best ideas because of their different experiences, perspectives and skill sets.' Odd as the coupling may be, and through all the banter, I pick up on the optimism and hope for those living with Parkinson's. What started as a 15-week trial program designed by Ray and David — and with the help of Edith Cowan University exercise physiologist Travis Cruickshank — the training package has helped transform the lives of those suffering from Parkinson's. Using the Fightmaster machines and a series of non-contact boxing exercises and warm-ups, the results have been physically and psychologically brilliant. Initial studies showed improved safety, tolerability, balance, fitness, sleep quality and Parkinson's severity scores, both in pilot trials and through the results of nearly 100 community participants. The increase in participants suggests it is working. People tend to vote with their feet. On Thursday, Professor Blacker told me: 'Exercise is medicine, and in fact, it's more than medicine, it is a lifestyle. Exercise has significantly helped to reduce my symptoms. I have learnt first-hand, and through the community working with Fight-PD, that a Parkinson's diagnosis is not the end, there is optimism and hope if you have the courage to move forward and challenge your body like an athlete does every day. 'Boxing movements, footwork and balance are excellent for PD because the postures and movements required are almost the exact opposite of what occurs in this disease. Add yoga to this and the benefits of brain, body and mind are heartening.' When you read about health and longevity in books like Outlive by Dr Peter Attia, the concepts of community, diet, exercise and health are paramount. Dr Attia talks of 'lifespan' as a measure of quantity, while 'healthspan' is a measure of quality. He describes this by saying: 'You want to skate smoothly to the very end of your life, not hobble to the finish line.' Essentially, it's not just about living longer, it's about living better. When Ray Fazio describes seeing Parkinson's patients and the benefits of the FightPD program he says it's 'the best feeling I've ever had in my life'. Helping others often has this effect. Another revelation through my conversations this week is that I always believed Ali's Parkinson's curse was the result of his boxing life. This isn't the case. Ali was diagnosed with young-onset, idiopathic Parkinson's disease, confirmed through decades of clinical observation and imaging. In other words, he is likely to have contracted PD regardless of his career. After he died, Ali's family gave permission for the release of his medical records to a leading PD researcher in the US who published some surprising findings in a leading neurology journal. While repeated head trauma from boxing may have been a contributing risk factor, the evidence does not support boxing as the direct cause. His condition showed classic features of Parkinson's, not post-traumatic Parkinsonism. This being the case, I was uplifted to hear that boxing training can have a positive effect on health rather than the other way around. Few want to get into the ring and punch on with an opponent, unless of course you are a professional or amateur fighter. I understand and respect that and wouldn't advocate for it. But I would recommend to any person, regardless of your gender or age, the benefits of training and moving like a boxer. It's a fun, confidence-building method of looking after your health and fitness. It has been proven, that irrespective of our opinions on certain contact/combat sports, the physical skills, mental stimulus, decision-making, and movement techniques required to compete in this environment are often very beneficial. Not only will they prove valuable in regular life, but in the case of Fight PD they can also have major health and medical applications. Throughout history, boxing has been described as a noble art, a science of timing and geometry, and a brutal ballet. Ali famously said: 'I hated every minute of training, but I said, 'Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.' Maybe there is something in this for all of us.

Backstage at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Billy Strings – the new wonder kid of bluegrass – is about to open an early evening set ahead of his heroes. Growing up, he never thought he'd get out of his midwest Michigan hometown; now at 32, he's touring the US with Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan as part of the Outlaw Festival. Wearing a tie-dyed T-shirt, jeans and his ginger hair tied back low, Strings is less bluegrass suit and big hat of the past and more psychedelic slacker instead. A jam-band camaraderie drives his modern-day narrative. He's the reason bluegrass made its way back into the Billboard charts for the first time in 22 years, thanks to his hugely successful 2024 release, Highway Prayers. The bluegrass revival sweeping contemporary music in the States is no accident. The crossover appeal of Chris Stapleton and Lainey Wilson is but one aspect of this unfolding history repeating, but Strings is bringing his own charming demeanour to a traditional sound of yesteryear in the hope of doing more than stirring nostalgia. His is mountain music and tales of rural struggles for a hip city crowd. His songs are tinged with hope as much as sadness, and battle scars aplenty. The rehearsal room backstage is choked in the damp smell of cannabis. It is LA after all, where 'California sober' is a thing. Hemp drinks and gummies are de rigeur, and getting lightly stoned takes the edge off for many gathered here. It's a crowd who has turned up for Willie and Bob, ready to lean into the stoner mood of the past. It feels like the '60s all over again, except these audiences are greyer and more withered – but there's plenty of Gen Z and Millennials here for the tune in and drop out spirit, too. Strings' wardrobe trailer is stocked with guitars. Country and western shirts hang on wire coat hangers, cowboy boots sit beneath them, and some toys – a troll wearing a sombrero hat, an illuminated ghost – and trucker caps fill the top shelf. It's a modest stash for this travelling wilbury. After Strings won two Grammys for best bluegrass album – in 2021 for Home, and in 2025 for Live Vol. 1 – it taught him to trust the process and realise he has what it takes to succeed. He's collaborated with Post Malone (M-E-X-I-C-O), written and recorded with Nelson (California Sober), and recently wrote a three-page letter to Dylan which his friend – musician T Bone Burnett – assured he had read and was impressed by. Dylan is also a fan of his music; joining the Outlaw Festival bill was not an afterthought. Strings first heard bluegrass as a four-year-old, his stepfather Terry Barber introducing him to the blues, fiddling and gospel inflected verses. 'My parents took me to the Charlotte Bluegrass Festival in Michigan, not far from where I grew up. That's when I saw bluegrass for the first time,' says Strings, who was born William Lee Apostol and acquired the nickname from an aunt who saw him learn bluegrass instruments with a never-before-seen ease. 'Seeing those old musicians on stage in their suits and big hats, playing gold-tone banjos, standing up to their mics, well, that blew me away,' he says. 'That's when I got bit by the bug.' Listening to the music of bluegrass Hall of Famers like Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, Jimmy Martin and the Osbourne Brothers set the mood, too. 'Bluegrass is music that's passed down over the generations in my family. My dad learned it from his folks, and I got it from him, and I will teach my son, too. It's a tradition that runs deep,' says Strings. Songs like Doc Watson's Salt Creek and Beaumont Rag and the Stanley Brothers' How Mountain Girls Can Love were on high rotation at home. Strings played with his dad until the age of 10, before swapping to the electric guitar. 'I had enough of hanging out with old men who I had little else in common with,' he says. He found his subculture with the skaters, who listened to death metal and hardcore. His eyes light up when he tells me he has collaborated with Canadian death metal band Cryptopsy. 'I don't have anything else I can do if this fails. I'm not a carpenter, and I don't like cleaning windows.' After finishing high school in 2011, Strings moved in with a friend in Traverse City, Michigan. It was there he took to open mic nights, wooing with traditional bluegrass. The city, known for its beaches, lured him, as did the art gallery scene and microbreweries that attracted university students. There he got a sense that there was more to life than his small-town trappings, and meeting fellow bluegrass musician Don Julin inspired him to branch out and play more. In July, Strings will embark on his first tour of Australia. He's already got a few friends there, including Tommy Emmanuel and the Melbourne band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (some potential studio time has been set aside should their plans align). 'When I knew I was having a baby, Stu MacKenzie [frontman of King Gizzard] was one of the first I reached out to ask how do you manage touring and raising a family,' says Strings, who married his manager Ally Dale in 2023. The couple welcomed their son River in September. 'Having a son has put everything I do in perspective,' he says. 'Work and music are important, but my family and their wellbeing take the lead. If they're good, I am free to go sing.' Strings spent a decade on the road before success came his way. It's only in 2025 that he's lessened that gig load. Back in 2017, it was 200 gigs and 300 days away from home. 'You know there's a cornfield out there, but you can't make out the leaves because you're moving too fast,' he reflects of that time. For all his guitar-prodigy ability, Strings continues with a private guitar tutor and assignments to meet behind the scenes. He writes most of his songs on the road and is already working on a follow-up to last year's Highway Prayers. The jam-band hero teamed with producer Jon Brion (Aimee Mann, Kanye West) to make Highway Prayers, an album Rolling Stone dubbed 'funnier if you're stoned'. There's Americana pop on Gild the Lily; an a cappella harmony leads Leaning on a Travelin' Song, where the banjo gets its rock star moment; while Cabin Song fiddles its way to swamp-like rhythms. 'I don't have anything else I can do if this fails,' says Strings as he leans into his leather sofa at the Sunset Marquis on the day of the gig. 'I am not a carpenter. I don't like cleaning windows or working in the hot sun. I play music and if I don't have this, I don't know how I would provide for my family. 'I want to play the best show possible, so people will come back and see me next time. I don't want to go back to being poor,' says Strings. 'It's truly deeply ingrained in me to survive, and the way I do that is to entertain and go crazy on stage.' Strings was born and raised in Michigan by his stepfather Barber and mother Debra Apostol. His father died of an overdose when Strings was two. He thanks his maternal grandmother Connie for instilling him with kindness, and says she's the reason he carries a lot of 'Christian guilt' around to this day. She was the closest thing to an angel in his wayward upbringing. 'I grew up in a wild family, a little band of outlaws. I saw a lot of substance abuse and a lot of things happened to me when I was little, things too deep to go into,' Strings says. 'I was exposed to many people ruining their lives. We had toothless tweakers with sunken cheeks sleeping on our couch, and I didn't want to do that. If I stayed in [Michigan], I knew that was where I was headed.' School was difficult too, and with two addicted parents, finding a voice of reason was hard. 'I failed all through school because I was an asshole, but that was because I had a lot of pain at home,' he says. 'It's hard to learn about history and algebra when you don't know what you're going to eat tonight. I was looking for a break in the wall and when I found that break, I made a run for it and I didn't look back. I didn't want to end up in misery.' At 23, Strings got sober. 'I have smoked crack, tried heroin, done meth and all sorts of shit, but I knew if I did it regularly, I wouldn't be able to come back from it,' he says. I knew this wasn't a life for me.' Loading The proud family man says he's found his purpose in life – it's more spiritual than religious epiphany. Strings admits DMT therapy has helped see the proverbial light. 'I believe it's my duty to wave the bluegrass banner. I love to turn people on it and I have found my happy place,' he says. 'Bluegrass hits harder than an MP3, you know,' he smiles. 'When you hear the banjo in real life and somebody sings into a microphone, it's not enhanced by backing tracks or autotune; it's more human than that. That's where sweetness lies. That's where the songs live and how we survive this game.'
