NordVPN achieves excellent results in latest security and performance evaluation
NordVPN has announced the results of an independent test assessing its performance and security.
The test was conducted by West Coast Labs in March 2025 and praised NordVPN's strong results, cementing its reputation as the best VPN on the market.
West Coast Labs carried out the evaluation under AMTSO (Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization) guidelines and examined NordVPN's performance across key technical categories.
Speed, security, and reliability were the main focuses and NordVPN was put up against three randomly selected, undisclosed, competitors.
West Coast Labs conducted the test on NordVPN's Windows 10 and 11 VPN applications, using a high-speed 1 Gbps connection.

Split tunneling and the kill switch were confirmed to be working and secure. For the most secure VPNs, a functioning and reliable kill switch is a non-negotiable feature. It cuts your internet connection should your VPN fail, ensuring your data is never unprotected.
Auto-launch on boot and auto-connect were also examined and performed consistently and correctly.
The Ookla speed test tool was used to measure VPN speeds, latency, and connection time. The regions tested were the UK, France, Netherlands, Germany, East Asia, Australia (east coast), and the U.S. (west coast).
NordVPN is one of the fastest VPNs and the highest download speed recorded in this test was 920 Mbps – recorded on a U.S. server. This is just short of the 950+ Mbps we found in our own testing.
Compared to the undisclosed competitors, NordVPN delivered 15.2% faster downloads, 12.4% faster uploads, and 7.9% lower latency.
The average time for NordVPN to establish a secure, encrypted tunnel was 1.67 seconds.
West Coast Labs noted this was 36.1% faster than the industry average. This was measured from the moment a user initiated a connection to the point when traffic was securely routed through the VPN.
Eight separate leak scenarios were tested, including IP address, DNS, WebRTC, and IPv6 leak checks, as well as protection during server switching, Wi-Fi hotspot changes, and mobile data transitions.
Two advanced cases were also tested. This was a split-tunneling flaw and the TunnelVision attack – a known vulnerability that can be particularly challenging to defend against.
All scenarios were passed with good marks, demonstrating NordVPN's class-leading privacy and security.
Some websites may identify the fact you're using a VPN and a small number might even block you from accessing the site.
West Coast Labs tried to access 100 of the most visited websites, both before and after connecting to NordVPN. There was a 100% success rate, with all sites remaining accessible. However, some CAPTCHA challenges were experienced.
Finally, NordVPN had a minimal impact on system performance. Compared to no VPN connection, memory usage increased by 1.1% and processor usage increased by 3.8%.

Microsoft's Free Upgrade Deadline For 400 Million Windows Users
Decision time for millions Another suggestion this week that the decision to keep Windows 10 may soon be impossible, with all users with eligible PCs forced to upgrade. That would put a deadline on the free upgrade offer, before it's taken out of your hands. As I've warned before, Microsoft's small print on recent Windows 10 updates has opened that risk. Earlier this year, the Windows-maker forcibly installed its new Outlook client on Windows 10 devices, and then did the same with Windows 11 24H2 for PCs running Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 'that are not managed by IT departments.' But the more critical confirmation came last year, when the company auto-installed the KB5001716 patch on Windows 10 PCs, warning that 'Windows may attempt to download and install feature updates to your device if it is approaching or has reached the end of support for your currently installed Windows version.' That affects 400 million Windows 10 users. As another wave of Windows 10 upgrade warnings floods social media, Windows Latest points out that 'Windows 10 support ends on October 14, and it can be extended for a year if you pay $30. Otherwise, Microsoft will force upgrade supported PCs to Windows 11 whether you like it or not.' There are two questions that will shape the next 100 days. First, how many eligible Windows 10 PCs will upgrade. On that note, this month has seen some surprisingly good news for Microsoft, as millions suddenly upgrade after months of inertia, meaning Windows 11 is poised to overtake Windows 10's market share for the first it's not there yet — alarmingly more than half of all users remain on Windows 10. Second, how many PCs are not capable of that free upgrade. Analysts think there are at least 240 million of those PCs, but there could be many more. These can't be forcibly upgrades and are not eligible for a free upgrade of any kind. Those users will need to pay Microsoft for a 12-month security update extension or will be left open to attack. That Windows 10 deadline is October 14. Microsoft and PC OEMS are pushing hard for those 240 million users — and plenty of those with eligible devices as well — to buy new Copilot PCs. This is all about 'securing your future' the company warns PC owners.

Iranians Find Pockets of Connection Amid Internet Blackout
After Iranians were cut off from the world for four days, the country's nearly complete internet blackout was abruptly lifted late Friday for some Iranians, who managed to get access to weak connections by switching to different servers or perhaps through sheer luck. But many said they thought the connections were temporary or unsafe, with the government still imposing tight restrictions that were difficult to bypass. 'It feels like we're in a dark cave,' said Arta, an Iranian who fled Tehran on Tuesday and was able to briefly send a few messages over Instagram late Friday. Like many others who have exchanged messages with The New York Times over the last week, he asked to be identified only by his first name to avoid scrutiny by the authorities. 'Even SMS texts don't go through sometimes,' he said. Many Iranians rely on virtual private networks, or VPNs, to evade government restrictions on the internet, but many of those services have been disrupted since Israel's attacks began. On Saturday, as some connection returned, providers urged their users to act cautiously. 'For your own sake, don't spread the link, the server will disconnect, and our work will only get harder,' one organizer wrote on a VPN provider's Telegram channel.
