Your phone won't be powering Xreal's upcoming Android XR glasses

There's been plenty of talk about Google, Apple, and Meta all working on AR glasses, but they aren't the only players in the game. Xreal is currently working on its own pair of AR glasses, known as Project Aura. Other than the fact that they'll run on Android XR, not much is known about the device yet. However, Xreal shared a few new details this week.
The Xreal team made an appearance at Augmented World Expo 2025 on Tuesday. As reported by Gizmodo, the company didn't release any new images or offer any demos, but it did reveal that your phone won't be able to handle the kind of processing Aura demands. Instead of using a phone as a computing device, Aura will use a separate, tethered, puck-like device for its computational needs.
This puck-like device, small enough to fit in your pocket, will house an unspecified Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. It's unclear if Xreal plans to use the same SoC that's heading to Samsung's Project Moohan — the Snapdragon XR2 Plus Gen 2. It's also said that this puck will be detachable, in case you want to store the glasses and the puck separately.
While a Snapdragon processor will power the puck, the glasses will have their own chip. This processor is said to be a modified version of the X1 chip found in the Xreal One glasses, called X1S. It was also confirmed that the glasses will have front-facing sensors, similar to the Meta Quest 3.
Xreal also recently updated its website to add that Aura will have a 70-degree field of view (FOV). The website claims this will be the largest screen the company has made to date. To accomplish this, the team is using a 'flat prism lens' that features a triangular-shaped pane. Although this pane of glass is 40% smaller than the glass in its older devices, it enables a wider FOV on the horizontal axis.
Considering the heavy processing demand, it wouldn't be a surprise if Aura ends up being a pretty power-hungry device. Unfortunately, Xreal didn't offer any details when asked about battery life. It appears the company also dodged questions about the price and release date.

Data center capital expenditures increased 53% year over year to $134 billion during the first three months of 2025, according to Dell'Oro Group research published Tuesday. The spike was driven by a surge in hyperscaler spending on AI infrastructure, particularly Nvidia Blackwell GPUs and custom accelerators, the research firm said. The four companies with the largest cloud footprints — AWS, Google, Meta and Microsoft — accounted for 44% of Q1 data center capital investments. Enterprise infrastructure spending — the second biggest category — accounted for one-third of the total, according to Dell'Oro. 'Despite some project cancellations by U.S. cloud providers, overall CapEx remains on track, with hyperscalers adjusting capacity rather than cutting investments,' Dell'Oro Group Senior Research Director Baron Fung said in the report. 'Enterprises, facing tighter budgets and tariff-related risks, are more cautious, prompting slight downward revisions to their CapEx forecasts.' An ongoing data center building boom sparked by generative AI adoption showed no signs of an early-year slowdown as hyperscalers raced to add compute capacity. Amazon reported $24.3 billion in Q1 capital expenditures, primarily to expand AWS' AI cloud infrastructure. Microsoft and Google weren't far behind, reporting $21.4 billion and $17 billion in CapEx for the first three months of the year, respectively. Dell'Oro Group expects the trend to continue. The firm forecasted a 30% year-over-year bump in data center investments for 2025, despite mixed economic signals triggered by tariff concerns and supply chain challenges. Last year, data center infrastructure capital expenditures grew 51% year over year to $455 billion. 'Tariff-related uncertainties are not expected to materially alter hyperscaler spending plans given their diversified global supply chains,' Fung said in the report. AWS, Microsoft and Google Cloud plan to invest more than $250 billion in buildouts this year, in part to ease capacity constraints and satisfy growing customer demand for AI processing power. 'The availability of GPU and supporting infrastructure is supply constrained,' Fung said in an email. 'Demand is so strong that the top 4 U.S. cloud service providers have had to turn away smaller customers.' Amazon signaled two massive U.S. data center construction projects earlier this month — a $20-billion hub in Pennsylvania and a $10-billion project in North Carolina. The company is also planning a nearly $13 billion buildout in Australia, according to a June 14 announcement. 'As fast as we actually put the capacity in, it's being consumed,' Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said during a May earnings call. The executive noted that demand for AI compute services is 'unlike anything we've seen before' and characterized AI as a 'once-in-a-lifetime reinvention of everything we know' in an April letter to shareholders. AWS and its hyperscaler peers are jockeying to establish early market share, Fung told CIO Dive. Realizing a return on the investments will take time, he said. Increases in venture capital investments have positioned 2025 to be a 'strong year for global medtech funding,' according to a report from market data research firm PitchBook. First quarter VC funding totaled $4.1 billion, the highest it has been since 2022. The number of confirmed transactions hit 216, reversing a four-quarter decline. However, the uptick in medtech mergers and acquisitions that PitchBook predicted under the second Trump administration has yet to emerge, and antitrust regulators are still challenging deals. Medtech VC activity fell in both 2022 and 2023, according to PitchBook. Last year brought signs that the market might be bottoming. The number of VC investments fell for the third year in a row, but the amount of funding was higher than in 2023. Signs of a VC recovery continued into the first quarter of 2025, when the $260 million investment in whole-body-imaging startup Neko Health was the largest of 11 rounds worth $100 million or more. With Elon Musk's brain implant startup Neuralink raising $650 million this month, PitchBook said preliminary data for the second quarter shows more than $3 billion of medtech VC funding so far. VC exits are rare, though. PitchBook said there were no significant medtech VC exits in the first quarter, and the total exit value remained roughly in line with the previous two quarters. Total exit value in recent years has been driven by rare big deals, such as Tempus AI's initial public offering in 2024 and the $6 billion acquisition of Athelas in 2023. PitchBook highlighted three notable exits that closed in the first quarter: Beta Bionics' IPO, Hologics' $350 million takeover of Gynesonics and Boston Scientific's $540 million acquisition of SoniVie. The level of activity has fallen short of PitchBook's expectations. 'Our earlier thesis that the new U.S. presidential administration's more lenient regulatory stance would catalyze M&A activity has yet to play out, as broader market turbulence in early 2025 has complicated dealmaking conditions across sectors,' PitchBook said. 'Additionally, regulatory resistance remains a headwind.' PitchBook cited the Federal Trade Commission's legal challenge to the $627 million private equity buyout of Surmodics as evidence of ongoing regulatory resistance. The FTC challenged the deal on the grounds it 'would lead to a highly concentrated market for outsourced hydrophilic coatings and eliminate significant head-to-head competition.' Competition is also likely to come from formidable rivals like Broadcom and NVIDIA Corporation NVDA. Qualcomm's extensive operations in China are further likely to be significantly affected by the U.S.-China trade hostilities. AMD is strengthening its footprint in the AI market through an expanding portfolio. The latest MI300 series accelerator family boosts its competitive position in the generative AI space. The accelerator is based on AMD CDNA 3 accelerator architecture and supports up to 192 GB of HBM3 memory, enabling efficient running of large language model training (up to 80 billion parameters) and inference for generative AI workloads. It is also benefiting from strong enterprise adoption and expanded cloud addition, strength in 7-nanometer-based processors is expected to strengthen the company's competitive position in the commercial and server market against Intel. AMD is currently leveraging Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's 7 nm process technology, which is enabling it to deliver its advanced 7 nm chips faster to market. AMD Radeon RX 7900 series chiplet design combines 5 nm and 6 nm process nodes, each optimized for specific chips in the in the traditional computing market, which still generates a chunk of its revenues, AMD is up against Intel's strong market position. With Intel systems so well entrenched, there is an obvious preference for system integrators to choose Intel processors over AMD. Moreover, AMD faces significant competition from NVIDIA in the GPU market. AMD has had relatively greater success in the mobile segment, and its current product lineup indicates that this focus will continue. However, competition in the mobile segment is likely to accelerate, with more ARM-based devices coming on the market.
