JAKARTA: reNIKOLA Holdings Sdn Bhd, a pure-play renewable energy power producer, signed a MoU with Indonesia's PT Pertamina Gas, through its wholly owned subsidiary PT reNIKOLA Primer Energi (PT RPE).
The MoU establishes a strategic collaboration for biogas business development across the Sumatra and Kalimantan regions.
The MoU was signed during the Pertagas Integrated Pipeline and Energy Summit (Pipes) in Jakarta, themed 'Accelerating Clean Energy Transition through Infrastructure Integration.'
This collaboration aligns with Pertagas's strategic goals to develop a reliable and integrated national gas pipeline infrastructure from upstream to downstream, including the advancement of renewable energy as a component of future energy distribution systems.
The agreement marks a concrete commitment by both parties to support the acceleration of the national energy transition and carbon emission reduction through the utilisation of renewable energy derived from organic waste such as palm oil mill effluent (Pome).
PT Pertamina Gas president director Gamal Imam Santoso said the company views biogas as a highly promising alternative energy source to support the national energy mix.
'With Pertagas's infrastructure and expertise, along with reNIKOLA's experience in renewable energy development, we are optimistic that this collaboration will bring real impact, both for the energy sector and communities surrounding our operational areas,' he said.
PT RPE director and CEO Dr Mohd Amran Mohd Yusof said this collaboration marks an important milestone in advancing a green economy based on local potential.
'We hope that synergy with PT Pertamina Gas will accelerate the realisation of biomethane projects that deliver positive social impacts, particularly in palm oil-producing areas and locations far from existing energy supply sources,' he said.
This partnership opens up significant opportunities for the development of biogas/biomethane production, purification, and distribution infrastructure that can be integrated with Pertagas's gas pipeline network.
On the other hand, challenges such as ensuring a stable supply of raw materials, the scattered location of feedstock sources, and adaptation to green energy regulations remain key concerns.
Nevertheless, with strategic synergy and support from various stakeholders – both governmental and private – this collaboration is expected to overcome those challenges and serve as a replicable model nationwide.

‘Fairer' tariffs for 23.6mil domestic users in peninsula

The Energy Commission said the new tariff schedule will exempt domestic users who use 1,000kWh and below to incentivise efficient electricity consumption. PETALING JAYA : Some 23.6 million domestic users in Peninsular Malaysia will enjoy fairer electricity rates, and in turn lower costs of living, through the new tariff schedule approved by the government. The Energy Commission said the new schedule will see, among others, an extension of off-peak consumption hours to cover all of Saturday and Sunday, and 10pm to 2pm from Monday to Friday. 'This is to encourage more effective management of consumption, in line with efforts towards a more effective and sustainable energy system. 'Consumers who use electricity during off-peak hours will save more on their bills,' it said in a statement today. The commission said the new tariff, which will be enforced from July 1, 2025 to Dec 31, 2027, will also see the base average tariff adjusted to 45.4 sen/kWh, compared with 45.62 sen/kWh previously approved in December 2024. Currently, the base tariff is set at 39.95 sen/kWh between 2022 and 2024. The base average tariff comprises a 12.98 sen/kWh network and retail charge and a 32.42 sen/kWh generation charge, with an additional 10% depending on an incentive given for efficient consumption. 'With this adjustment, the total average cost of the electricity tariff (in Regulatory Period 4) is lower by 19% compared with Regulatory Period 3,' it said. It said the automatic fuel adjustment mechanism would replace the imbalance cost pass-through mechanism, allowing for adjustment to the generation charge based on current fuel market prices and currency exchange rates. 'Based on our forecast until the end of the year, we believe (adjustments) will not exceed three sen per month. We have already taken into account some level of demand growth,' the commission's CEO, Siti Safinah Salleh, said at a session with the media. The commission said the new schedule will exempt domestic users who use 1,000kWh and below and low voltage, non-domestic users who use 200kWh and below to incentivise efficient electricity consumption. It said the government has agreed to specific electricity tariffs for agriculture, water services, sewerage and rail operations. 'Registered higher education institutions, schools, welfare homes and houses of worship will receive 10% rebates,' it said. It said household heads in hardcore poor families registered in the e-Kasih system will continue to enjoy monthly rebates of up to RM40. 'Overall, this approach aims to encourage energy efficiency and renewable energy usage. All consumers will receive electricity bills in a more detailed and itemised format,' it said.

Wall Street futures edge lower as Mideast conflict continues

Solar stocks dipped after the Senate's changes to Donald Trump's tax-cut bill revealed a phase-out of solar, wind and energy tax credits by 2028. (EPA Images pic) NEW YORK : US stock index futures edged lower today as conflict in the Middle East entered its fifth day, dampening global investor confidence ahead of the Federal Reserve's (Fed) upcoming policy meeting. Iran and Israel's air war, which began on Friday when Israel attacked Iran's nuclear facilities, has raised concerns that the conflict could create bottlenecks for oil exports from the oil-rich Middle East. US energy stocks rose in premarket trading as oil prices remained elevated due to the uncertainty. Shares of Chevron and Exxon were up nearly 1% each. The surge in oil prices comes ahead of the Fed's monetary policy decision tomorrow, when policymakers are widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged. Money market moves show traders are pricing in about 48 basis points of rate cuts by the end of 2025, with a 59% chance of a 25-bps rate cut in September, according to CME Group's Fedwatch tool. At 5.33am, Dow E-minis were down 269 points, or 0.63%, and S&P 500 E-minis were down 37.25 points, or 0.62%. Nasdaq 100 E-minis were down 138.5 points, or 0.63% US Senate Republicans late yesterday unveiled proposed changes to President Donald Trump's sweeping tax-cut bill that had cleared the House of Representatives in May. 'The Senate's version of tax legislation looks broadly similar to the House-passed version in its near-term fiscal effects but would likely cost … a few hundred billion dollars more over the next decade,' said Goldman Sachs strategists in a note. Solar stocks dipped after the Senate's changes to Trump's tax-cut bill revealed a phase-out of solar, wind and energy tax credits by 2028. Shares of Enphase Energy, which makes solar inverters, dropped 17%. Solar panel sellers Sunrun fell 27.5% and SolarEdge Technologies dropped more than 21.6%. First Solar lost nearly 11%. Shares of nuclear power companies rose after the Senate extended credits for nuclear energy to 2036. Oklo was up 1.9% and Nano Nuclear Energy rose 2.2%. As investors flock to traditional safe-haven assets amid heightened geopolitical uncertainty, a rise in US Treasuries pushed yields lower across the curve. Yields on the benchmark 10-year fell about 3 basis points to 4.42%. Among other movers, Eli Lilly is in advanced talks to acquire gene editing startup Verve Therapeutics for up to US$1.3 billion, according to a report. Shares of the drugmaker fell 1.2%, while Verve advanced 82.9%. Key data for the day includes monthly retail sales and import prices scheduled at 8.30am.
