UMNO Stays in Govt to Champion Malay Agenda: Tok Mat
KUALA LUMPUR: UMNO will remain in the federal government to continue championing the Malay and Bumiputera agenda, said party deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
He described the decision as a strategic move, warning that exiting the government would simply allow another party to take its place.
'If we leave, another party will fill the gap within two hours. We don't want to be spectators on the sidelines. It is better to be in government, where we can drive new agendas suited to today's realities,' he said.
Mohamad, who is also the Member of Parliament for Rembau, was speaking after officiating the Cheras UMNO division delegates meeting here today.
He cited Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as one of the party's key focus areas.
Although the portfolio is traditionally under the Human Resources Ministry, he said UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had taken the lead in addressing gaps, particularly affecting Malay youths.
'Many are not dropping out because they failed exams, but because they never sat for them. That's why we introduced the National TVET Policy, the National Tahfiz Policy and several other initiatives,' he said.
Mohamad added that UMNO was undertaking internal reforms to adapt to a shifting political landscape, following setbacks in the 2022 general election.
'The political reality now is that no party, anywhere in the world, can govern alone. That era has ended.
'We must be realistic. Although we have 192 divisions, our strategy should focus on constituencies we can win. Political idealism can be misleading and dangerous,' he said.
He also expressed pride in UMNO's internal unity, saying it was one of the few stable parties in the country.
'No one will support a party that's in disarray. We must maintain harmony and project ourselves as a moderate, peaceful force,' he added.

Anwar's dilemma grows as allies compete for Cabinet posts
THE resignations of PKR's Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad as economy and natural resources ministers have sparked a race among unity government parties for the vacant Cabinet posts. This has deepened the dilemma faced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. UMNO, eyeing its seventh ministerial slot after Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz's defection to PKR, has proposed names like Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, sources said. Johari is the current Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister. Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan is also mentioned as a potential interim economy minister. Meanwhile, Amanah also is pushing for more representation, citing its strong track record, while MIC and MCA demand fairer Barisan Nasional (BN) representation, criticising UMNO's dominance. While Anwar faces pressure to balance coalition dynamics, both MIC and MCA have so far been denied ministerial posts, though they are under the BN banner, and BN is a loyal party to the Madani regime. Reports now suggest Johari is among those tipped to act as interim economy minister, replacing Rafizi, who made it clear he is not coming back to Anwar's cabinet. However, Anwar could also appoint Johari, analysts said, as a permanent economy minister in a portfolio swap between UMNO and PKR. A portfolio swap could happen, but the quota balance remains. Some reports are saying UMNO could propose others to replace Johari at the Commodities, such as Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan or Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail. We also have to note that last week, Amanah Johor called on the Prime Minister to allocate more cabinet positions to the party following the resignation of two ministers. Its deputy chairman Dr Zuhan Zain highlighted Amanah's strong performance and commitment to the unity government, citing leaders like the late Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, and Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. While the vacant posts were previously held by Rafizi and Nik Nazmi, Zuhan argued that UMNO's nomination of non-PKR candidates opens opportunities for all coalition parties to propose their leaders. On the other hand, UMNO has been reminded not to behave as if it is the sole party representing BN in the coalition government. MIC strategic director R Thinalan criticised BN chairperson Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's push to maintain UMNO's seven ministerial positions after Tengku Zafrul's departure, calling it disappointing to MIC grassroots. Thinalan argued that UMNO is not the sole BN representative, questioning why MCA or MIC cannot fill Cabinet roles. Kota Kinabalu: With the full implementation of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) in Sabah just around the corner, the state government must explain what measures are in place to protect low-income groups from the expected rise in living costs. Sabah Umno information chief Datuk Suhaimi Nasir said the absence of clear strategies to assist vulnerable communities is worrying, especially as nearly 40pc of households in the state fall under the B40 category. 'Many depend on informal work or subsistence economies. The SST could erode their already limited purchasing power — particularly in rural areas,' said Suhaimi, who is also Libaran MP, in a statement on Friday (June 20). The tax rollout, set to begin on July 1, was introduced under Budget 2025 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Under the new framework, a 5pc–10pc sales tax will apply to selected non-essential goods, while the service tax is being extended to sectors such as rental and leasing, construction, finance, private healthcare, private education, and beauty services. While he acknowledged the importance of SST in boosting national revenue, he said it must be balanced with fair and inclusive support policies to prevent it from becoming a burden to ordinary Sabahans. 'The revenue collected must be returned to the people through tangible improvements in rural infrastructure — such as roads, clinics, clean water, and internet coverage — especially in interior areas still left behind,' he said. 'Sabahans deserve transparency on how public funds are spent and how these measures directly benefit their daily lives.
