Gill's big test: Shubman to captain India in England, Shastri shares key advice

The Hindu2 days ago

Shubman Gill is set to lead India in red-ball cricket for the first time, stepping into the captaincy for the high-stakes five-Test series in England starting June 20 at Headingley. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring last month, the 25-year-old batter inherits one of the most demanding jobs in world cricket.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri, speaking on The ICC Review, offered candid advice: 'Take your time. It's not going to be easy. He's been asked to do a tough job — captaining India in England.'
Gill, who debuted in December 2020, has scored 1893 Test runs at an average of 35.05. While English conditions present a stern challenge, Shastri sees this tour as a vital learning curve.
'What I saw of him with Gujarat Titans in the IPL impressed me. He was composed, calm, and showed tactical maturity,' Shastri said, referring to Gill's captaincy stint this season, which ended in the Eliminator.
India last won a Test series in England in 2007. Gill now leads a new-look side in the first series of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship cycle.

Watch: Bumrah Celebrates After Taking Root's Wicket For 10th Time In Test Cricket

Last Updated: Root was caught by Karun Nair in the first slip on the third ball of the 47th over of England's first innings bowled by Bumrah on Saturday. Joe Root was batting on 28 runs from 57 balls when Jasprit Bumrah bowled a super delivery on Saturday (June 21) to get the better of him. The ball kissed the edge of Root's bat and travelled straight to first slip, where Karun Nair was fielding, and he made no mistake to complete the catch. Root was the third English batter to get out on Saturday, and for the 10th time in 25 innings, he was sent back to the pavilion by Bumrah. After taking Root's wicket, Bumrah celebrated in an animated manner, and the video of his pumped-up celebration is now going viral on the internet. Before getting out, Root hammered two fours and added 80 runs for the third wicket with Ollie Pope (100 from 131 balls). Bumrah, who is the world's No. 1 Test bowler, picked up a total of three wickets for India on Saturday and conceded 48 runs in 13 overs. He opened his wicket account by getting Zak Crawley caught out by Karun on the last ball of the first over of England's first innings. Crawley faced six balls and scored four runs. Ben Duckett was the second English batter dismissed by Bumrah on Day 2 of the ongoing Test. Bumrah breached Duckett's defence and shattered his stumps. Before getting bowled out by the 31-year-old fast bowler, Duckett scored 62 runs from 94 balls with the help of nine fours. The wicket of Duckett helped Bumrah break Wasim Akram's record of most Test wickets by an Asian bowler in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries. During his playing days, Akram dismissed 146 batters in 32 Tests played in SENA countries. On the other hand, Bumrah now has 148 wickets to his name in 32 Tests played in SENA countries. Bumrah, who made his Test debut for India against South Africa at Newlands in Cape Town on January 5, 2018, has 40 wickets to his name in 10 Tests played on English soil so far, and he has dismissed 64 batters in 12 Tests played in Australia. Bumrah has played two Tests in New Zealand, in which he has picked up six wickets, and has 38 dismissals to his name in eight Tests played in South Africa.

ENG vs IND 1st Test Day 2: Pant-Bumrah shine as India keep ENG in check

Bumrah, with three wickets, was India's only successful bowler on day 2 Aditya Kaushik New Delhi Day 2 at Headingley delivered a gripping contest as India, powered by Rishabh Pant's stroke-filled century and Jasprit Bumrah's incisive bowling, maintained a firm grip on the opening Test. The morning belonged to India, who began from a position of strength and extended their dominance through disciplined batting. However, England clawed back with a burst of wickets before lunch and later with the bat through Ollie Pope. Despite losing early ground, the hosts ended the day on a steady note, thanks to Pope's fighting hundred. With both sides landing key blows across three sessions, the match remains delicately poised, though India still hold the upper hand with a healthy first-innings total and three English wickets already back in the pavilion. Pant's century headlines India's strong start Rishabh Pant gave India the ideal launchpad in the morning session, bringing up his century with trademark aggression. Team management reportedly lauded his knock as 'the innings that set the tone for the day.' Shubman Gill, who had crossed 150, fell soon after to Shoaib Bashir, triggering a collapse. England's bowlers bounced back impressively, taking four wickets for just 24 runs. Stokes removed Karun Nair and Shardul Thakur, while Tongue accounted for Pant to swing momentum back slightly in England's favour. Tongue shine in second session India post 471 The post-lunch session saw Josh Tongue dismantle India's tail. He dismissed Bumrah, Jadeja, and Prasidh Krishna in quick succession, sealing his maiden five-wicket haul in Tests. India were bowled out for 471, a total that reflected their early control but also left a sense of what could've been with better lower-order resistance. Pope counter-punches after Bumrah's early strike England's reply began shakily with Crawley falling in the opening over to Bumrah. But Ollie Pope and Ben Duckett steadied the innings with a 103-run stand. Bumrah struck again to remove Duckett and later sent back Root. However, Pope stood tall, reaching an unbeaten 100—his second century against India—as England closed Day 2 on 207/3, still trailing by 263.
