CarMax Inc (NYSE:KMX) achieved a 42% growth in earnings per share, marking the fourth consecutive quarter of positive retail unit comps and double-digit EPS growth. The company reported total sales of $7.5 billion, a 6% increase from the previous year, driven by higher volume despite lower prices. Retail gross profit per used unit reached an all-time high, supported by strong demand and operational efficiencies in logistics and reconditioning. CarMax Inc (NYSE:KMX) successfully leveraged SG&A expenses, achieving a 680 basis point improvement as a percentage of gross profit. The company doubled its share repurchase pace, buying back approximately 3 million shares for $200 million, with $1.74 billion of repurchase authorization remaining. CarMax Auto Finance's sales penetration decreased by 150 basis points year-over-year, primarily due to an influx of self-funded higher credit purchasers. The average retail selling price decreased by approximately $400 per unit year-over-year, reflecting pricing pressures. Wholesale gross profit per unit, while historically strong, was slightly down from the previous year. The loan loss provision increased to $102 million, influenced by higher sales and lower credit quality, as well as uncertain economic outlooks. The company's digital sales, while significant, saw a slight decline in the percentage of total sales compared to the previous quarter. Q: How are you viewing the sustainability of the recent acceleration in your used car business, and how should we consider expenses coming back into the model? A: William Nash, President and CEO, explained that the business's recent performance is driven by both macro factors and internal improvements such as inventory management and pricing strategies. He expressed confidence in continued sales growth and market share gains. Enrique Mayor-Mora, CFO, added that SG&A leverage is a focus, with variable costs being managed effectively to support sales growth. Q: With comp growth fluctuating and comparisons becoming more difficult, how should we model comp growth for the rest of the year? A: William Nash stated that while two-year or three-year stacks can provide some insights, they are not entirely reliable due to various dynamics over the years. He reiterated confidence in growing sales and gaining market share, maintaining the outlook provided at the beginning of the year. Q: Can you provide more color on the shift in non-prime loans and the impact on provisions? A: Jon Daniels, EVP of CarMax Auto Finance, explained that the held-for-sale transaction allows CarMax to avoid holding loss reserves for certain non-prime receivables, mitigating risk and capturing gains upfront. This strategy supports growth in the non-prime segment while managing risk. Q: What is the strategy behind the new marketing campaign to highlight your omnichannel capabilities? A: William Nash highlighted the campaign's goal to educate consumers about CarMax's flexible buying options, emphasizing that customers don't have to settle for a single buying method. The campaign aims to increase awareness of CarMax's best-in-class omnichannel experience. Q: How is AI influencing your marketing strategy, particularly in terms of search engine optimization? A: William Nash noted the shift from traditional SEO to generative engine optimization (GEO), emphasizing the importance of adapting to new technologies to maintain visibility and effectiveness in marketing efforts. Huawei Patents Solid-State Battery That Would Let You Road Trip From Miami To Maine On A Single Charge

Toyota is currently working on solid-state batteries it says will allow it to build 900-mile EVs, but while many would call that overkill, dads across the country know it isn't enough. We need more range if EVs are ever going to be good enough for a proper road trip, and if Huawei can deliver on its latest solid-state battery patent, we may almost be there. That's because it offers more than 1,800 miles of range on a single charge, CarNewsChina reports. For context, that's enough range to drive from Miami, Florida, to Bangor, Maine, without stopping. That said, China's range estimates are even more generous than Europe's, which means you may only get 1,200 or 1,300 miles out of a battery like that in the United States. Pitiful, I know. At that point, there's basically no reason to even bring your external catheter on a road trip. Not that the U.S. would allow Chinese battery tech to be sold here in the first place or invest in catching up. Our EV tech will stay generations behind China's, and we will like it. From the sound of it, the real value in this patent is the battery's energy density: The patent outlines a solid-state battery architecture with energy densities between 400 and 500 Wh/kg, potentially two to three times that of conventional lithium-ion cells. The filing also details a novel approach to improving electrochemical stability: doping sulfide electrolytes with nitrogen to address side reactions at the lithium interface, a long-standing obstacle to the commercialisation of sulfide-based batteries. Huawei's design aims to boost safety and cycle life by mitigating degradation at this critical junction. Read more: These Supercars Lose Value So Quickly, They're Almost A Steal Allegedly, given a big enough charger, Huawei says it could charge the battery in about five minutes, too. That would require an absolutely absurd amount of power, but it isn't like companies in China aren't working on that, too. BYD has already shown off a Megawatt charger that's capable of adding 250 miles of range in about five minutes. Early versions would also likely cost a small fortune, though, and it's also hard to see how practical Megawatt charging would be in the remote areas where people might actually use it. But while BYD does actually plan to build at least some of those Megawatt chargers, don't be surprised if Huawei's 1,800-mile solid-state battery ends up being more of a tech demonstration than anything else. Instead, it seems much more likely that the batteries that will ultimately make their way into production cars will be smaller and therefore lighter. A battery that's a third the size of the 1,800-mile battery would still offer more than enough range for a road trip while also drastically reducing weight. Considering how heavy EV batteries are — the battery in the Hummer EV weighs nearly 3,000 pounds — if there's one thing EVs need, it's less weight. So while Huawei's 1,800-mile battery is still theoretical for now, it's still cool to see battery tech advancing to the point where, in a few years, we may see long-range EVs that weigh about the same as gas-powered cars. At least in other countries outside the U.S., since Republicans have decided they'd rather just turn us into a technological backwater. Want more like this? Does BYD or Tesla stock offer the best value?

Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and BYD (OTC:BYDD.F) are the two titans of the global electric vehicle (EV) market, but their investment cases diverge sharply when you dig into the numbers and outlook. Here's how they stack up for investors looking ahead. Tesla's forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios remain stratospheric by any standard. The company is expected to trade at 168.8 times earnings in 2025, falling to 111.4 times in 2026 and 85.7 times in 2027. Even by its own five-year history, these multiples are elevated, and they are more than 10 times the consumer discretionary sector median. BYD, by contrast, looks far more modest. Its forward P/E is 18.4 times for 2025 and 14.2 times for 2026. That's just a fraction of Tesla's and much closer to sector norms. This huge valuation gap reflects the market's belief in Tesla's future growth, but also means any disappointment could hit the shares hard. Tesla's price-to-sales ratio for 2025 is a lofty 10.4 times, while BYD's is just 0.65 times. In other words, investors are paying a huge premium for each dollar of Tesla's sales, while BYD trades closer to traditional automaker multiples. BYD's lower multiple reflects its mass-market positioning and focus on affordability, while Tesla's premium signals expectations for high-margin growth and disruptive new business lines. Tesla boasts a market cap over $1trn, with $37bn in cash and $13bn in debt. This gives it a strong net cash position and plenty of firepower for R&D and expansion. BYD, with a market cap around $147bn, holds $21bn in cash and $5.7bn in debt. Still solid, but on a smaller scale. Tesla's financial muscle gives it flexibility, but BYD's balance sheet is also robust and supports its rapid global expansion. The real battleground is not just EVs, but autonomous driving and robotics. Tesla's valuation is highly detached from automotive peers because investors are betting it will dominate self-driving technology and unlock new business models like robotaxis and AI-powered logistics. Its Dojo supercomputer and Full Self-Driving (FSD) efforts are central to this thesis, though regulatory hurdles remain. BYD is not standing still. Its latest models integrate advanced driver-assist systems, LiDAR, and rapid-charging battery tech. This has already made headlines. However, its approach is more incremental, focusing on affordability, scale, and steady technological improvements. Coupled with the fact that it's Chinese, it hasn't been afforded the same attention by investors. BYD trades at far lower valuation multiples and has recently overtaken Tesla in global EV sales, especially in China and Europe. Meanwhile, Tesla commands a huge premium based on its potential to lead in autonomy and AI-driven transport. However, the execution risk is huge. For value-focused investors, BYD is the obvious choice, but clearly the market favours Tesla and Elon Musk's ambitions.
