Indonesia' strict Muslim province canes couple for sex outside marriage

A man and woman were publicly flogged 100 times each in Indonesia's conservative Aceh province on Wednesday after they were found guilty of sex outside marriage by a court operating under strict Islamic law.
Sexual relations between an unmarried couple are outlawed in Aceh, which imposes a version of sharia, the Islamic legal code.
Indonesia banned sex outside of marriage in its latest criminal code in 2022 but that law will not come into force until next year.
The two were lashed in sets of 10 with a rattan stick as a small crowd watched on at a park in provincial capital Banda Aceh, and the female suspect was lashed by a woman, according to an AFP reporter at the scene.
Three other suspects were caned a combined 49 times for alleged gambling and alcohol consumption.

'Today we are carrying out flogging punishment for perpetrators of adultery, alcohol consumption, and online gambling,' Banda Aceh Mayor Illiza Sa'aduddin Djamal told reporters.

Prabowo's visit to Russia underscores Indonesia's non-aligned foreign policy

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto 's visit to Russia this week is seen as a pragmatic step towards advancing ties between the two Brics members while maintaining Jakarta's non-aligned foreign policy. Officially part of the 75th anniversary of Indonesia Russia diplomatic ties, Prabowo's three-day visit will include a keynote address by him at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on Friday, following an invitation by his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin Indonesia's foreign ministry said both countries would be holding discussions on transport, shipbuilding, technology and regional cooperation. Prabowo has declined an invitation to attend this week's G7 summit in Canada, citing prior commitments in Singapore and Russia. Although Indonesia is not a G7 member, Prabowo has been invited as a guest of the host government. His schedule reflects Jakarta's strategic calculus rather than a diplomatic snub at Ottawa, according to analysts. 'Prabowo believes there is more to gain from going to Moscow than to Canada,' said Yohanes Sulaiman, an associate professor of international relations at General Achmad Yani University. He was less inclined to want to be involved in the G7 summit, given that its agenda was dominated by tensions over Israel's attack on Iran, Yohanes added.

Putin hosts Indonesia's Prabowo in Russia in bid to deepen ties

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto held talks with President Vladimir Putin in the northern Russian city of St Petersburg on Thursday as they explore ways to deepen what some officials have called a burgeoning strategic partnership. The deepening of ties between Russia and Indonesia , part of Moscow's bid to forge new relations with the Global South amid Western attempts to isolate it over the Ukraine war , has perturbed some powers such as Australia. Meeting in the Constantine Palace, Putin noted Indonesia's entry into Brics as a full member and said he was sure it would make a significant contribution to the grouping, which he said was gaining clout in the world. Prabowo thanked Putin for his support over Indonesia's entry to Brics and said that ties between the two countries were improving. Russia and Indonesia's foreign ministers, Sergei Lavrov and Sugiono, speaking in Moscow earlier this week, mentioned a possible strategic partnership between the two countries.
