Connor McDavid ‘on a mission' to lead Oilers to first Stanley Cup championship since 1990
Connor McDavid wants to go home with the right trophy this year.
The Edmonton Oilers captain was voted winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in last year's NHL playoffs. But he didn't get the hardware he really wanted – the Stanley Cup. McDavid had to settle for being the sixth player in the six-plus decades since the Conn Smythe was first awarded to win the trophy despite playing for the losing team in the Final.

McDavid led all scorers last spring with 42 points, including a playoff-record 34 assists. But none of them came in Game 7 of the Final, a 2-1 loss to the Florida Panthers. He hopes to get his name on the most famous trophy in sports this year when the Oilers and Panthers face off in a rematch. Edmonton hosts Game 1 at Rogers Place on Wednesday night and is trying to win its first championship since 1990, when the Oilers capped a run of five Cups in seven years by defeating the Boston Bruins in five games.
The five-time NHL scoring champion hopes to follow the formula of NHL stars such as Sidney Crosby who've become Cup-winners after failing on their first try. Sid and the Pittsburgh Penguins were involved in the most recent of the 11 Cup Final rematches, losing to the Detroit Red Wings in six games in 2008 before beating the Wings in seven games the following year. The Crosby-led Penguins went on to win the Cup again in 2016 and 2017.
McDavid, a big Crosby fan, watched No. 87 go from agony to ecstasy in a year and wants that for himself.

'I think as a kid growing up, you have such an appreciation for seeing teams that win and seeing the Cup brought out,' he said Tuesday during Media Day. 'Seeing Sid win after growing up and being a Sid fan was pretty cool to see. There are steps to everything, and when you're a kid, you want to just play in the NHL. You want to be successful and do all these great things, and there comes a point where it's only about winning.
'I think this group reached that point years ago, and we've been on the cusp ever since. It's been a few years here with this corps, and we're looking to finish the job.'

Stan Bowman, who joined the Oilers as general manager and vice president of hockey operations last summer, knows a thing or three about winning the Cup – he was the architect of the Chicago Blackhawks' trio of Cup-winning teams from 2010-15. He said he noticed right away that his captain had a single focus for this season.

'The first time I talked to Connor, I went to see him in the summer after I started, and all he talked about was 'I just want to win the Cup.' That was it. We didn't talk about anything else. This is his singular focus.
'He's accomplished everything he could accomplish individually in this sport. He continues to dazzle us every game, every round. He's incredibly motivated and driven to win. You run out of superlatives to talk about him as a player and describe what he does on the ice. I think the thing he does that's equally impressive is the way he is driving our team with his determination. There's no one else you want to go into battle with than someone like that. He's our leader.'
McDavid's exploits on the ice speak for themselves. But Bowman said his captain is a man on a mission.

'Not only is he impressive with what he can do on the ice, but his focus is driving us,' Bowman said. 'You could see how bad he wanted it last year, when it didn't go Edmonton's way in Game 7. Right now, he's on a mission. I think as much as you get excited when you win – I've noticed it even from the first round, the second round, even in Dallas, he's very focused on 'we need four more wins.'

It's hard to believe, but this is McDavid's 10th season since the Oilers made him the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. He's piled up a load of hardware during that time, but it's only in the past two years that McDavid and his teammates have broken through to the championship series.
McDavid agrees with his coach, Kris Knoblauch, that the Oilers are better equipped to handle the emotions and challenges of playing in the Stanley Cup Final. That includes navigating the frenzy of Media Day, where he's naturally one of the most sought-after players.

'I would say it's just dealing with the emotion of it, just because you feel closer,' he said. 'There's a big circus. It can feel like it's larger than it is. At the end of the day, it's another series and we're playing another great team, and you've got to beat them before anything else happens — so they have our complete focus.'

'They' are the Panthers, who are in the Final for the third straight season and looking for back-to-back championships. McDavid said he and his teammates have to have all their focus on atoning for last year's Game 7 loss in the Final.
'All of our energy is going into beating the Florida Panthers,' he said. 'There should be nothing else on anyone's mind. I think there's familiarity there. We know what to expect from their game. I think they know what to expect from ours.'

His polo shirt looked more tailored than tattered and the Spire Motorsports driver was ready to race rather than rumble. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. hadn't socked Hocevar with a right hook quite yet — hot on the heels of Stenhouse's threat to beat up his racing rival after last weekend's race in Mexico City — leaving the next shot at any potential retaliation inside or outside the cars set for Sunday's NASCAR race. Hocevar should walk with his head on a swivel because Stenhouse can throw a right hook. Just ask Kyle Busch, who suffered a crushing TKO loss when he clashed with Stenhouse after last year's All-Star race. Get ready! The Pounding at Pocono could be just another round in the ongoing feud between Stenhouse and Hocevar. 'He probably will be looking over his shoulder for a long time,' Stenhouse said Saturday at Pocono. 'We'll see how that goes.' Hocevar has to look over his shoulder — and for that charging Chevrolet in his rearview mirror. 'The scorecard has it that I I'm getting something from the 47 at some point, right? And I think my team and everybody kind of knows that,' Hocevar said. Their beef has little chance of getting squashed any time soon, a dispute that started three races ago when Hocevar wrecked Stenhouse early at Nashville. Hocevar sent Stenhouse spinning last week in Mexico City, which ignited the postrace melee on pit road. Stenhouse seemed to grab at Hocevar as he spoke to him, then slapped at his helmet as Stenhouse walked away. Hocevar's in-car camera captured audio of the confrontation. 'I'm going to beat your (behind),' Stenhouse threatened. 'You're a lap down, you've got nothing to do. Why you run right into me? It's the second time. I'm going to beat your (behind) when we get back to the States.' Hocevar avoided a smackdown from Stenhouse but his Spire team hit him where it hurts — a $50,000 fine on Tuesday for derogatory comments he made about Mexico City on a livestream as NASCAR raced there last weekend. At just 23 and in his second full Cup season, Hocevar has whipped himself into a flurry of unwanted attention, continuing a trend that started last year when even veteran Denny Hamlin chimed in and said NASCAR had ' to do something to Carson.' Stenhouse might do it on behalf of the sanctioning body with his fist or even his No. 47 Chevrolet. Hocevar conceded, yes, payback may be imminent and the time to talk out their lingering issues is over. Yet, Hocevar pleaded: 'It's not an open hunting season on the 77 because of these incidents.' Hocevar stamped his own target on his back. With his aggressive racing. With his ignorant words. 'Just because I do something in the heat of the moment or maybe, you know, you do it two or three times, doesn't mean I'm not hard on myself for those mistakes because they are mistakes,' he said. 'It's just trying not to make that a pattern. But when you're constantly making aggressive moves like we're doing, it's balancing that fine line of, you know, you make a thousand moves a day. Just unfortunately, what people remember isn't always the good ones. You always remember the negative ones.' Case in point, Hocevar walked back his derisive comments about Mexico after he actually experienced the culture of the country following NASCAR's foray into a new Cup Series market. 'I didn't give it a shot. I didn't give it a chance,' Hocevar said. 'I didn't go walk around. I didn't go see it. When I did, you know, then hindsight's 20/20, then I have my own opinion. But I've already put it out there.' Spire also ordered Hocevar to attend cultural-sensitivity and bias-awareness training. He can be thankful he gets a shot at another race. Stenhouse's spotter, Tab Boyd, was fired this week by HYAK Motorsports in the wake of an unflattering social media post about his experience in Mexico. 'That's above my paygrade,' Stenhouse said. The biggest KO so far came in the standings, where Stenhouse has been flattened in just three weeks from 13th in points in the thick of playoff contention before Nashville to 21st entering Pocono. Hocevar is one point ahead of Stenhouse in the standings. 'That's the thing that hurts worse for our team is just where it's put us,' Stenhouse said. Stenhouse's trash talk more worthy of UFC hype could put him in hot water should he actually deliver on his vowed retribution and take out Hocevar. If it comes to a point where NASCAR dishes out a monetary punishment, it's OK, the 2023 Daytona 500 champion could afford his fine. He just sold his North Carolina estate for $12.2 million, the highest-priced residential sale ever recorded in the greater Charlotte metro area. 'It's been a big week. We've had a lot going on,' Stenhouse said, laughing. He'd rather talk real estate than about the space and time wasted thinking about Hocevar. Thus, bringing in a clutch playoff performer like Marchand would be huge for them. Nevertheless, it is going to be intriguing to see what happens between Marchand and the Panthers this off-season. Local businesses, fans make final preparations for Florida Panthers' championship parade and celebration
Thousands are expected to descend on Fort Lauderdale Beach Sunday to celebrate the back-to-back Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. More people are expected to be at the celebration this year compared to last, so businesses and fans are gearing up for the big day. Fans and businesses are making last-minute moves Brian Broeckelmann said he couldn't make last year's Panthers championship parade. "I actually had to work," he said. But he gets a second chance, and said he isn't missing this year's parade. He's getting some last-minute Panthers gear for him and his family at Sinbad Sports. Broeckelmann said he thought the first championship was a once-in-a-lifetime event. "Yeah, except this team is pretty special," Broeckelmann said. Owner Sinbad Elhaddad said he ordered more gear this year. The City of Fort Lauderdale said more people are expected to go this year. He told CBS News Miami that the Stanley Cup Championships have boosted sales by about 30%. "From last year, people are still coming and asking for last year's gear," Elhaddad said. "Now they're gonna be asking for back-to-back." How to travel for the parade and celebrations City officials are recommending that parade-goers use ride-share services, since driving can be difficult. The city has a map that shows 26 different parking garages that are open, but city officials say they can be anywhere from a 5-minute to an hour walk from the parade. So instead of all that hassle, you could take the water taxi. Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi president Greg Farley said he has 15 boats that will all be running Sunday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and he said they can all carry a combined 1200 people. He told CBS News Miami it's more economical and fun to travel this way. "It will be $15 all day," Farley said. "So Passengers will get a wristband before they board the boat for the first time and they can get on and off as much as they want throughout the day." The Water Taxi route map is here. On State Road A1A, the barricades are set up and the stage is being built. Joe Donovan and his wife are visiting from Boston; their hotel is right on the parade route, so they'll catch the team marching down the strip before flying home Sunday night. "We've been to championship parades before in Boston, but we've never been to one on the beach," Donovan said.
