Peppa Pig's baby gender reveal couldn't be more silly if it tried

Why should we make such a huge and very public deal of announcing the gender of a baby? (Picture: ITV)
Peppa Pig and her cartoon parents are staging a real-life gender reveal for their new piglet? Wake up and smell the bacon people!
Yes, that's right, on Friday night, the family will descend on Battersea Power Station in London to announce whether they are having a boy or a girl (spoiler: It's a girl).
The idea of this shindig has me snorting like silly Daddy Pig.
First up, the whole gender reveal concept is hogwash, in my opinion, and something that should be made as extinct as George Pig's beloved 'dine-saws'.
To be fair, I've never been to a gender reveal party, but I've seen the parade of videos on TikTok: The cutesy cupcakes, the towering balloon arches, the dogs reluctantly sporting huge, coloured bows or with their fur dyed…
Then there's the poor friends and family already face being summoned to See The Baby, marshalled into attending baby showers, baptisms and birthday parties, then maybe nativities, school plays, sports days and so on… is this what the future will hold for Miss Rabbit, Grandpa Pig and Madam Gazelle, too?

That said, I accept that tastes differ and of course, being pregnant is a special and exciting time, and expectant parents want to share the joy with their near and dear. So I understand why some people choose to celebrate their impending arrival in this way – if said arrival is an actual, real human being.
But a fictional pig? Give me a break!
As a parent, I've of course watched Peppa Pig (Picture: Debbie Stowe)
My own sons passed quickly through their Peppa Pig phase, but I've sat through my fair share of episodes.
I've always considered it among the less bad content that parents of young children are subjected to.
I like the fun and silliness of Peppa and her pals– and I've always encouraged my boys to jump in muddy puddles. Then there's the close family bonds depicted, the characters' ability to not take themselves too seriously, and Peppa's curiosity about the world.

When news of Mummy Pig's third pregnancy emerged – revealed live on Good Morning Britain in February, no less – I'll admit it seemed like a good opportunity for a down-to-earth, empathetic show to deal with the topic of expanding families in an age-appropriate way.
But having Mummy and Daddy Pig do their porcine gender reveal at London's Battersea Power Station on Friday night, lighting up its iconic chimneys in pink and blue, feels like one ham-fisted gimmick too far.
This fuss and fanfare – taking over a highly visible and significant public landmark for something that is essentially a family matter – is ludicrous.
I appreciate that there are worse things going on in the world to worry about and maybe I shouldn't be getting my tail in a twist over a cartoon.
But I, for one, won't be taking my kids to watch four pigs celebrate in a cloud of pink smoke/slicing into a pink cake/releasing pink balloons (choose your gender reveal stereotype) in the name of a £1 billion cartoon franchise.
Oh, Peppa. As you like to say: 'You're doing it all wrong!'

Stephen Mulhern's £1m Butlin's role axed in latest career blow for ITV star

Former Butlin's redcoat Stephen Mulhern has lost his lucrative £1m contract with the famous holiday firm. ITV star Stephen Mulhern has been dealt a huge career blow. The presenter has been dropped from his reported £1million gig as the face of Butlins, rounding off a spate of ill fortune with work commitments. Mulhern, 48, hasn't had his contract renewed with the famous family-friendly UK holiday resort chain. As part of the deal he performed magic shows on stage at the firm's centres in Minehead, Bognor Regis and Skegness, but he will not return after the summer season. ‌ A spokesperson confirmed the news and stated that the star, a former redcoat for the legendary firm, had 'enjoyed' his time working with the brand. ‌ The spokesperson told the Mirror: 'Stephen has absolutely loved being part of the Butlin's family - performing his stage shows in front of thousands of holiday makers across the country and the relationship with Butlin's remains hugely positive. "This change allows Stephen to explore new opportunities in the family holiday space – something he's incredibly passionate about." A Butlin's spokesperson added: "Stephen has been an incredible part of the Butlin's experience and continues to be a valued member of the family. Stephen's much-loved live show won't return in 2026 after three fantastic years, but we're thrilled to be working together on ongoing projects this autumn.' Stephen's Butlin's axe was revealed by the Sun, as a source told them: 'Stephen has been a massive hit with holidaymakers. He began his career as a Redcoat and has kept families brilliantly entertained.' The TV magician's role on ITV Dancing On Ice came to an end earlier this year when the show was cancelled. The reality ice skating competition was cancelled due to low ratings, after Stephen had joined Holly Willoughby to host in January. He replaced Phillip Schofield, who was booted from all of his ITV roles after his affair with a younger colleague at This Morning was revealed in 2023. And last year, Stephen's other TV show, In For A Penny, was cancelled after six seasons , though there have been hinted it will return. A source previously told The Sun: "So don't put your pennies away just yet as the team could be popping up in your local town, to challenge even more members of the public to take part in their unique and madcap games in the future." ‌ Stephen also suffered a traumatic time in his personal life last year when his dad passed away. Stephen paid tribute to his late father in a touching moment after his Royal Variety Performance act last December. As the audience applauded his magic tricks, he said: "That was for you dad." The TV host continues to front ITV's Deal for No Deal which was revived in 2023. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Noel Edmonds and what he's really like off-camera, revealed by co-worker

Noel Edmonds and what he's really like off-camera, revealed by co-worker Noel Edmonds' friend and co-star Julie has revealed what the TV favourite is really like off-screen and how he's settled in to life in New Zealand since he moved there in 2019 Noel Edmonds had worked with British expat Julie on his River Haven ineyard (Image: Julie Crook ) A woman who worked alongside Noel Edmonds at his River Haven estate in Ngatimoti, New Zealand, has shared her insight into the television personality's off-screen nature. Following his departure from I'm A Celebrity in 2019, Edmonds relocated to New Zealand, where he purchased the £15m River Haven property. This estate comprises 12 properties, including a pub named The B*gger Inn and his own vineyard. These features will be showcased in an upcoming ITV documentary that follows Edmonds as he builds a new life in New Zealand. ‌ Julie, a British expat living near River Haven, had the opportunity to work with Noel in his vineyard after offering to help with the grape harvest. ‌ The British star moved to New Zealand after his exit from I'm A Celebrity in 2019 (Image: Mike Marsland, WireImagevia Getty Images ) Although their collaboration was filmed for the ITV show, Julie claims that Edmonds' friendly nature was genuine and not just for the cameras, , reports Belfast Live. In an interview with Julie revealed: "He's just the kind of man who goes out of his way. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter Article continues below "He doesn't put it on just for the camera, he's just a really nice guy. While we were working on the vineyard, he was giving us water and ice pops, and he got to know everybody's name and even when you go to the B**ger Inn for a meal, he'll just come over and just have a chat whether you know him or not, and some Kiwis don't even know that he's a celebrity. "He doesn't shy away from hard work either, he was getting his hands dirty." The British star had bought the property after relocating New Zealand with his wife Liz (Image: ITV ) ‌ Julie has responded to the criticism aimed at Noel over his purchase of River Haven, which has stirred a local and media storm since he moved in, per a report from the Express. She weighed in on the situation, calling his relocation 'great' for driving tourism to Ngatimoti, thanks to his vineyard being located there. Discussing Noel's charitable nature, Julie highlighted his $10,000 contribution towards clearing a local school's debt. ‌ However, she conceded that Noel's particularly British dry wit doesn't always resonate with the locals. Expanding on this, she remarked: "I don't think because they don't get him and as an immigrant from the UK, we have the English banter so I understand it, and Kiwis don't get that sense of humour, and it can come across as a bit weird to them." The first episode offers viewers a glimpse into how Noel and his wife Liz are getting on with the community, featuring highlights such as Noel outlining his health regimen, the eye-catching golden statue outside his pub, and a revelation from Noel that he "was an emperor in a past life".
