Google sees pockets growing at a fast clip: Country head Preeti Lobana
Macroeconomic uncertainties and a consumption slowdown may have had some impact on business, but
Google
continues to be "very bullish" on India and there are pockets which are growing at a fast clip,
Google India
country manager
Preeti Lobana
said Tuesday.
Sectors that are growing exponentially include gaming, edtech, ecommerce and
quick commerce
, Lobana said in her first media interview after taking over as the tech giant's top India executive. She took over the role in January from Sanjay Gupta, who was promoted to Google's president for the Asia-Pacific region.
"We have a bird's eye view on where the tension in the macroeconomic trends is leading to, so the consumption slowdown, you'll see that a little bit. But you equally see some of the other verticals that are not linked to consumption doing really well and growing users, getting the spend," she said.

Lobana, who joined Google more than seven years ago after having previously worked at the NatWest Group, American Express, Standard Chartered Bank and ANZ Grindlays Bank, said she is "very bullish" on India, though "some of the challenges like supply chain and manufacturing that people are seeing may offer bumps".
On the macro data factors that influence GDP, she said India may have faced challenges, but compared with some other countries, "we have done well".
Live Events
Google is betting big on the "One Google" strategy and artificial intelligence to grow its India business. These include a full stack of solutions, from ads to cloud to payments, for engagements with large and small customers alike, Lobana said. The company continues to invest heavily in India, including in products that are India-first, Lobana said. AI and cloud can help drive intelligence and efficiency for businesses here, she said.

"The cutting-edge technology that we have, if Indian companies embrace and integrate that now, they have a two- three-year window for that productivity leap," Lobana said. "If we can do that, it'll be significant progress for India and for many of our big industry players because that's how they transform their supply chains, that's how they transform and get more efficiencies and effectiveness out of their customer service."
On the run-ins with regulators over Android and Google Play's billing system, Lobana, without commenting on the specifics of the case, said the company is working with the government and regulators and is committed to growing the ecosystem.
"(With)
Play Store
, the kind of opportunity it's given to developers in finding the right users...how we keep that ecosystem safe and secure in this era of cyber fraud and all of that, that means that we have to have a business model," she said, adding that the model is evolving and Google is mindful of the country's context.
Indian developers
on the Play Store are raking in Rs 4,000 crore annually, with 84% of this revenue coming from outside the country, she said.
The executive dismissed the threat from AI chatbots to Google's proprietary product, Search, saying it is not a "zero-sum game" - every time there has been a tech shift such as mobile (which threatened its ad business) or Tiktok, Instagram (which threatened YouTube), Google has adapted and come out stronger.
The company is evolving its products to align with changing consumer preferences towards longer queries in the AI era - for instance, enabling more conversational and intuitive queries in Search, Lobana said. The AI mode is launching soon in India, she added.
Google is also looking at how to partner with the government's IndiaAI Mission and is exploring how to bring its expertise to contribute to empowering the ecosystem and working with startups here, she said.
The global leadership is betting on the Indian talent as well, said Lobana, adding that the India team has doubled since pre-Covid times, with leadership roles also growing.

Bamboo Farming Holds Promise to Uplift Vidarbha's Farmers: Experts
Nagpur: Senior scientist and agroforestry expert Vijay Illorkar on Friday said bamboo farming has immense potential to transform the agricultural landscape of Vidarbha, offering farmers a sustainable and profitable alternative. He was speaking at the first bamboo harvest at the Agroforestry Research Farm of Dr Punjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV). Illorkar, who has been leading the study on bamboo since 2010, said that the university has submitted 15 key research-based recommendations to the state govt over the years, which have been implemented through various policies. Despite being a traditional resource, bamboo cultivation demands specialised skills. The tools used are still traditional, but training is necessary, as general labourers often cannot operate them effectively," he said. Illorkar emphasised the need to match bamboo varieties with available labour capacities, and also stressed the importance of fumigation and post-harvest handling. Adding to the discussion, bamboo entrepreneur Ashish Kaswa, who out of his 27 cultivation sites, collaborated with the PDKV and harvested the plant at the facility, said, "The plant has the natural ability to absorb toxic elements such as arsenic from water and convert them into harmless salts," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending Local Enterprise Accounting Software [Click Here] Accounting ERP Click Here Undo Kaswa said that this could come in handy for Vidarbha, where many districts have high alkaline water. Additionally, bamboo retains 70–80% moisture in its early stages, requiring proper awareness to avoid premature harvesting. Despite its ecological and economic value, challenges in training labour, high harvesting costs, and misinformation have hindered widespread adoption. "Bamboo, unlike other crops, requires specific knowledge and labour training, which most daily-wage farm workers lack," said Kaswa adding that current harvesting costs of Rs2,000 per tonne need to be brought down to Rs 1,200 to make the venture viable. Historically, bamboo's use in India was curbed by the 1927 Forest Control Act imposed by the British, who restricted its cultivation and trade. "The Britishers labelled it 'poor man's timber' and psychologically distanced even the affluent Indians from its use," said Kaswa, adding that bamboo played a vital role in Indian culture, from surgical procedures to cremation. However, in 2017, bamboo was finally removed from the Forest Act by the Central govt.

Labelling ASEAN countries as China's ‘B-team' unwarranted, insulting: Congress
The Congress on Friday hit out at Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal for his remarks against the India-ASEAN trade agreements, signed under the UPA government, saying labelling these countries as 'B team of China' is 'irresponsible and insulting'. Speaking at the India Global Forum (IGF) session in London, Goyal said, 'There was a point of time 15 years ago when we were more focused on doing FTAs with countries who were our competitors. So if I am doing an ASEAN agreement, it really is silly because (that is) opening up my market to my competitors, many of whom have now become the B team of China.' 'So effectively and indirectly, I have opened up my market for goods that find their way from China into India,' Goyal had said. Sharma, a former Union Commerce Minister, Friday said in a statement, 'Piyush Goyal's statement terming the Trade agreement with ASEAN as silly and labelling these countries as B team of China is irresponsible and insulting.' He said India and ASEAN countries 'have been engaged in a multifaceted relationship for over three decades' which is 'mutually rewarding and important'. 'This is an integral part of the Look East policy to deepen and diversify India's relations with a region economically vibrant and of enormous geostrategic importance…' 'The Commerce Minister should be prioritising strengthening trade relations with partner countries and not insulting them while bending backwards to negotiate a suboptimal trade agreement with US on its terms,' he added.
