If Shubman Gill shows white-ball form at No.4, the world is his oyster: Dinesh Karthik

India Todaya day ago

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik said Shubman Gill will be well served if he is able to replicate his white-ball form in Test cricket. Gill will take up a new role in the batting order as he will be India's new No.4 following the retirement of Virat Kohli in Test cricket. The India captain's new role was revealed by Rishabh Pant during the press conference on Wednesday, June 18.advertisementThis will be the third new batting spot for Gill since the start of his Test career, after beginning as an opener and playing at No.3 in the past few years. Speaking in a video on his official Instagram account, Karthik said that Gill would know about the expectations on him and the new India captain will be eager to win over the dressing room."Shubman Gill, who is going to take over the mantle from the King. That's a big one, but he knows. He wants to win that dressing room. If he gets going with the bat and shows the form he has shown in white-ball cricket, the world is his oyster," said Karthik.
The pressure is certainly on India's new Test skipper. Considering the lack of runs from the batters in the last few series, Gill will certainly be expected to shoulder that responsibility while also ensuring his captaincy when on the field is on the mark.advertisementGill has scored 1893 runs in 32 Tests, scoring six hundreds. The Punjab Kings captain, however, has struggled in overseas conditions, especially in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia), averaging. Gill averages 25.70 in 11 Tests. Gill has scored only two fifties, both of them coming in Australia. The young captain has managed just 88 runs in three Tests at an average of 14.66.In contrast, Gill has 2775 runs in one-day internationals at an average of 59.04. He has hit eight hundreds, including a double hundred in his nascent career.Vice-captain Rishabh Pant confirmed Gill will bat at No. 4, a position that was long occupied by Virat Kohli who retired in May.Karthik named his playing XI for the first Test and started off with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top of the order. The former wicketkeeper-batter felt that Jaiswal was ready for the challenge and said that Sai Sudharsan, who impressed in IPL 2025, will be at No.3.Karthik also feels that Shardul Thakur will get the nod over Nitish Kumar Reddy for the match at Headingley. The experienced all-rounder had an impressive show in the recent four-day intra-squad practice game where he scored 122 and was also amongst the wickets.advertisement"Jaiswal looks like a man who is ready for a challenge like this. At No.3, Sai Sudharsan, I feel he has done outstandingly well in white-ball cricket, IPL, and in the limited opportunities he has got for India as well. Can he convert that form into red-ball cricket as well?""At No.8, I think Shardul Thakur is going to be the man. He is a bowling all-rounder, but his batting is going to be useful. We all know how lower-order runs are extremely important," said Karthik.England.Shardul Thakur. He surely knows a thing or two! #TeamIndia | #ENGvIND | @imShard pic.twitter.com/NAY9HCv7rh— BCCI (@BCCI) June 17, 2025Dinesh Karthik's predicted top 8 for India in Headingley TestYashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul ThakurMust Watch

IND vs ENG: Did India backpedal on Shardul Thakur? Gautam Gambhir's statement before Australia series offers contrast

(AP Photo) NEW DELHI: In a twist to India's selection strategy, Shardul Thakur was named in the playing XI for the first Test against England at Headingley, raising eyebrows over the team's sudden pivot from recent choices. Just a few months ago, ahead of the Australia tour, head coach Gautam Gambhir had indicated that the selectors had moved on from the Mumbai all-rounder. Live Score: India vs England, 1st Test Day 1 The Indian team, now under the leadership of Shubman Gill, is entering a new red-ball era after the retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin. But the inclusion of 33-year-old Thakur as the fourth pacer alongside Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna is being seen as a possible contradiction to the forward-looking stance taken earlier. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Before India left for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, Gambhir had openly backed youngster Nitish Kumar Reddy over Thakur. "It is also about moving forward," Gambhir had said at the pre-departure press conference. "We have picked the best squad who can do the job for us. Nitish Reddy, we all know how incredibly talented he is and if given an option, he will deliver for us." Poll Has the selection of Shardul Thakur contradicted the earlier selection strategy? Yes, it seems contradictory No, it's a tactical decision Thakur, however, now finds himself in the thick of action in England - a country where he has previously performed well, taking 10 wickets and scoring 173 runs in four matches on the last tour. While Gambhir's words then suggested a changing of the guard, India's team sheet in Leeds reveals a more pragmatic selection - perhaps dictated by Thakur's past success in English conditions, or a shift in thinking. How familiar are you with Ben Stokes's England? Meet the first-timers vs India

While the spotlight will be on the Indian team with Shubman Gill taking charge as the Test captain, the hosts, England, are also in a transition of their own. The side has brought in new talents in both the batting and bowling departments who will be facing India for the first time when the two sides meet in the first of a five-match Test series in mix of experience and potential seems to be the theme with which both squads have been built. However, some of the new faces have the chance to showcase why they should be considered to be the future of the Test us have a look at these names and what we can expect from them in this five-match affair. | Leeds Test, Day 1 Updates |HARRY BROOK The 26-year-old star from Yorkshire has been touted to be the next big thing in English cricket after Joe Root. He has already taken the captaincy role in the limited-overs setup, but now he will be focused on making his mark in his first encounter against India. Despite being a talented batter, Brook has yet to showcase his dominance, at least at home. When looking at the numbers, he has played in England, New Zealand and Pakistan, where he averages 39, 75, and 84, he has some experience under his belt, he will certainly fancy his chances of putting up some big runs, especially against a worthy opposition like India, to show he has what it takes to perform in the big SMITHThe Surrey-based wicketkeeper-batter has been known for his attacking intent, something that we usually see in Bazball. Embracing the approach altogether, the 24-year-old has arguably cemented the spot as the lead keeper. However, it will be interesting to see how he fares when it comes to the bowling quality that India holds. Jasprit Bumrah and co are not the ones that usually get pummelled for runs, and it could be an interesting watch should he opt for the attacking approach against the Indian bowling addition, he also seems to have got a hold of the conditions at home. He averages 49.10 at home as compared to 30 when playing away. His dynamism when coming out to bat could be a game-changer for England, which could bail them out of a dire situation if need CARSEThe bowling all-rounder has been in the mix when it comes to the white-ball scene, but has been putting in impressive performances with the ball. In the five Tests he has played, he has taken a total of 27 wickets. This will also be his first game at home, and it is very much a possibility that he will be a problem, considering that most of his wickets have come in New Zealand, an area with relatively similar conditions to the in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), South Africa, Carse carries a tattoo of its coordinates—anchoring his roots in every spell. He's the son of James Alexander Carse, a former Zimbabwean cricketer who played county cricket for Northamptonshire in TONGUEThe 28-year-old pacer has been on the fringes for the most part. But in the few games he has been a part of, he has certainly made an impact. On his Test debut at Lord's against Ireland, Tongue ran riot in the second innings, taking a five-for. He even featured in the Ashes, where at Lord's he was able to finish with five wickets as well, showcasing that he can perform against top teams as is one that looks to make use of the wobbled seam to his advantage, something different compared to the traditional swing bowlers, and this could be a handful, especially during times when variable bounce is prevalent.
