Chinese hospital offers IVF for single women, allows them to meet, evaluate sperm donors
A private hospital in eastern China is under investigation for offering illegal in vitro fertilisation (IVF) services specifically for single women, allowing them to meet and choose sperm donors.
The Nantai Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Hospital, located in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, was shut down and is being probed by the local health commission after a media outlet uncovered its illicit IVF operations.
Not listed among the official hospitals authorised to provide these services, the facility advertised that it could help single women conceive for a minimum fee of about 100,000 yuan (US$14,000).
An unidentified doctor from the hospital informed Shandian News that the sperm is sourced directly from donors, who are primarily young men around 25 years old.
The doctor explained that clients could select a donor based on various criteria, including appearance, educational background, nationality, and even the option to meet the donor in person.

'You can choose graduates from prestigious universities involved in the '985' and '211' initiatives, or men holding a master's or PhD degree. The cost increases with the level of education,' the doctor noted.

Vulnerable groups in Hong Kong should get Covid-19 vaccinations: medical expert
Hong Kong's vulnerable groups should get vaccinated against Covid-19 infections once a year as new outbreaks will occur every six to nine months, a medical expert has urged. David Hui Shu-cheong, a professor of respiratory medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, made the appeal on Saturday while pointing out that the current wave of Covid-19 infections had been declining since late last month and could end in July or August. 'The current outbreak started in April, peaked at the end of May and is now beginning to subside,' he told a radio programme. 'High-risk groups such as the chronically ill, children, the elderly and those with weakened immunity, can easily develop complications such as pneumonia, respiratory failure or even fatalities once infected with the Covid-19 virus.' Authorities have reported six severe paediatric Covid cases so far this year, none of which have been fatal. Two had underlying illnesses and four were unvaccinated. Hui said as Covid-19 antibodies were not long-lasting, there would be periodic decreases in overall community immunity and new outbreaks occurring in cycles – about once every six to nine months.

Chinese swimmers had to have eaten 5kg of food to fail 2021 drug tests, Usada chief says
The head of the United States Anti-Doping Agency told senators that Chinese swimmers would have had to eat around 11 pounds (5kg) of food to test for the amounts of the performance enhancer that resulted in the much-debated positive drug tests from 2021 that were later disregarded.
