BTech in design to begin at IIT Delhi in 2025: All you need to know

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi is introducing a new four-year undergraduate programme -- BTech in Design—from the academic session 2025 - 26. Offered by the Department of Design, the course aims to build both technical knowledge and design thinking among students, with a focus on addressing socio-technical problems through practical and interdisciplinary approaches.To be eligible for admission, applicants must clear two national-level entrance exams -- JEE (Advanced) and the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED). Only those who perform well in both tests will be shortlisted, as clearing just one will not make candidates eligible.advertisementStudents must have completed their Class 12 or equivalent in 2024 or 2025, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects.ELIGIBILITY AND OTHER DETAILS
For UCEED eligibility, candidates must be born on or after 1 October 2000, with a five-year relaxation given to students from SC, ST, and PwD categories as per the norms.Applications will be accepted online through IIT Delhi's official portal. Candidates are advised to secure valid scores in both required exams before applying.Important dates related to application submission, counselling, and seat allocation will be announced on the institute's website, and applicants should check it regularly.The BTech in Design programme has a total credit requirement of 155 and will begin with an initial intake of 20 students. About half of the coursework will come from design-related subjects, while the rest will be taught by other departments, schools, and centres across the institute.advertisementThe curriculum covers topics such as design frameworks, design prototyping, mechanics, environmental science, research methods, entrepreneurship, teamwork, and exhibition design.The aim is to promote problem-solving through design, encourage collaboration, and develop practical skills through hands-on experience.The launch of the BTech in Design programme is part of wider curriculum changes across IIT Delhi from 2025–26.Students will have more flexibility in choosing electives across disciplines and can opt for an Honours path. At the end of the third year, students interested in further studies can apply for an integrated BTech-MTech course to complete both degrees in five years.The institute also plans to improve faculty-student engagement by reducing first-year class sizes and increasing focus on creative, environmental, and ethical learning.

QS world University Rankings 2026: IIT Kharagpur ranks 4th in India, 215th globally

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has been ranked 4th in India and 215th globally in the latest QS World University Rankings 2026, the institute said in a statement on Friday. The institute jumped seven places from its position in the 2025 rankings. The QS World University Rankings 2026 evaluated 8,467 institutions worldwide and featured 1,501 universities in the final list. IIT Delhi is the best-ranked Indian institution in the rankings, climbing more than 70 places in two years to secure the 123rd spot in the coveted list. IIT Kharagpur has performed well in parameters like sustainability, employer reputation, citations per faculty and international research network, the statement noted. "This global recognition is a testament to our collective pursuit of excellence in knowledge creation, dissemination, and societal impact. We remain committed to fostering innovation and interdisciplinary learning at a global level," said Prof. Amit Patra on the latest rankings before handing over the charge to his successor, the newly appointed director Prof. Suman Chakraborty. The official handing-over of charge is scheduled to take place next week. Patra has been serving as acting director since January 1, following the completion of tenure of Director Prof. VK Tewari on December 31.
