On this day in 2024: 'old York meets New York' during trade mission
On this day in 2024, the York Press reported that a delegation from York had arrived in New York on a four-day mission to boost trade and friendship ties with the US city.
The delegation included the Lord Mayor of York, the Archbishop of York, representatives from the University of York and York St John, and business leaders.
They were set to take part in a series of business networking events and discussions, including a mini 'Great Yorkshire Show' (to promote York and North Yorkshire) at the British Consulate General.
The visit, billed as 'old York meets New York,' was to culminate in a special service at Saint Thomas Church on Fifth Avenue, where a friendship 'ledger stone,' designed and carved at York Minster, was to be unveiled.
This ledger stone was to mark a century of friendship between the cities: New York presented York with a memorial tablet, alongside a message from the then US President, in 1924.
Sarah Czarnecki, president of York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, said: "Trade missions like this were once commonplace but they have become expensive.
"Each business is paying for their own flights and accommodation and we have designed an itinerary to ensure business connections are made.
"This is a forward-thinking move by the Chamber to provide a valuable opportunity for those looking to explore new markets."
The trade mission was organised by the West and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, with the Minster leading on the ceremonial aspects of the visit.

Hotel in China rapped by wildlife officials for using endangered red pandas to wake up guests
They're alarmingly cute. A hotel in China has been rapped by local wildlife officials for using endangered red pandas during wake-up calls for guests, according to a report. The Lehe Ledu Liangjiang Holiday Hotel, located in the mountains near Chongqing, offered boarders the option of a 'red panda-themed holiday,' which included bringing the endangered species into guests' rooms for wake-up calls, The Times of London reported. The hotel brought the endangered species into guests' rooms for wake-up calls. For the morning meet-ups, the adorable, furry critters would be ushered into plush hotel rooms to interact with guests who shelled out for the special treatment. The unique experience flew under the radar of wildlife officials in the Communist country — until a British tourist and YouTuber couple went viral with a panda video from Lehe Ledu. The 'On Tour With Dridgers' video showed an apparent handler lead the well-kept critter into the room and up onto the bed. Content creator Reanne Ridger fed the bushy, red beast a treat and even stole some cuddles during her brief visit, video showed. Even more eyes were drawn to the questionable practice after the publication of a feature article in a popular Chinese magazine, the Times of London reported. However, the publicity also drew the attention of local forestry officials who could barely believe their eyes. Hotel staff told the outlet that they borrowed the pandas from a local zoo. AFP via Getty Images In a statement, Chongqing Forestry Bureau ordered the hotel to immediately halt all 'close contact' between animals and guests and threatened to prosecute the hoteliers for any further infractions, the outlet reported. China's state-backed newspaper The Global Times issued their own scathing report on the panda pandering. Hotel staff told that outlet that they borrow the pandas from a local zoo and rotate which critters are called into work. They further assured that all the red pandas are vaccinated, cleaned, and cared for by dedicated staff, The Global Times reported. 'Close contact' activities have been banned in China since 2018 as the practice was a customary form of income, The Times of London reported. Despite what its name would indicate, red pandas are not bears, but are closely related to raccoons and are a nationally protected wild species in their native China.

Why Williams Just Bet Their Future on James Vowles - And Why It Matters
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Williams F1 announced a contract extension for its team principal, James Vowles, securing his future with the team. Vowles joined the team back in 2023. Many in the paddock considered it a backmarker team, forever doomed to struggle at the bottom of the grid. He was comfortable at Mercedes, excelling as an important figure within the team as the Motorsport Strategy Director. A move to Williams represented a massive risk for Vowles — considering how poorly the team had performed in the past. Team principals rarely get a second chance in F1. He would have one shot at establishing himself as a quality leader of a racing team. Vowles could have waited for another chance, but he believed in the project and new ownership. He gained enough confidence based on those two factors to dive into the deep end with Williams. Photo byThe move paid off for Vowles - he solidified himself as a team principal, and Williams is progressing up the grid. Almost halfway through the season, Williams sits fifth in the Constructors' standings, the highest it has been since 2016. Before the former Mercedes official took over, the British racing team's points-scoring performances were considered mere blips on the radar. This season, the team's expectations are to score points at every race. The change in expectations comes from a new car development philosophy. Rather than make a car only suited for a specific track type - under Vowles' leadership - the team designed the FW47 to be balanced and versatile across the calendar. Vowles brought a new mindset for the team, pushing expectations higher every season and demanding more from the entire team, from the engineers to the pit crew. He diligently evaluated the performance of the entire team. He kept those who contributed and removed anyone who did not fit the team's new direction. I am absolutely delighted to have signed a new long-term contract with Atlassian Williams Racing. Remaining at Williams was never in doubt, but I'm really pleased to have formalised it. This team has felt like home from the moment I walked through the door. It really is a… — James Vowles (@JV_F1) June 19, 2025 The cost cap brought an element of parity to Formula 1, giving smaller teams like Williams a fighting chance against the top flight. Everyone in the F1 paddock noticed the revolution happening at Williams, which has led to some shocking acquisitions. The most notable believer in the Williams project is Carlos Sainz Jr. Sainz was one of the most accomplished free agents on the market last season, and after all the top teams were full, he was left looking for the best of the rest. Despite massive interest from other teams, Sainz chose to believe in Vowles and joined Williams. The tangible progress Williams has made under Vowles' leadership makes him the team's most valuable asset, more than the drivers or engineering teams. Vowles injected energy and belief into the team. He introduced a methodical and practical approach that created a faster car on track. Vowles is an architect who can craft a well-oiled racing machine, making him worth every penny of the extension for a Williams team that has been stuck in mediocrity.
