The push to get Michiganders' identification cards replaced with federally-compliant REAL ID cards has resulted in 200,000 IDs issued to residents over a period of three months, the Michigan Department of State announced Friday.
Department employees either issued new or upgraded REAL IDs over the past 12 weeks, bringing the state into more than 76% compliance with a new U.S. requirement for REAL ID in order to travel domestically by air.
A REAL ID is a driver's license or state identification card that has been verified with proof of U.S. citizenship and proof of legal residence in the U.S. They are distinguishable by the gold star in the upper right-hand corner. Per a change in federal law, Michigan residents as of May 7 are required to present a REAL ID-complaint card when attempting to fly anywhere in the U.S. The IDs also allow entrance to certain federal facilities as allowed by federal law. Overall, the IDs have protections against copying or altering identification information.
REAL IDs are different from Michigan's enhanced IDs and driver's licenses, which allow entry to and from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean by land or sea. Enhanced IDs, however, are also REAL ID compliant.
A news release issued Friday said Secretary of State branch offices served more than 90% of those customers within 20 minutes of their scheduled appointment times, signaling that the transition has been relatively smooth thus far.
'The hardworking staff at our branch offices throughout the state rose to this challenge and set a new standard of exceptional public service,' Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said in a statement. 'I'm grateful for their dedication and commitment to excellence, which ensured a smooth process for Michiganders during a potentially disruptive transition. This is what it means to have a state government that truly works for people.'
A total of 202,571 REAL ID-compliant driver's licenses or state IDs were issued between February 23 and May 17. The week of May 4 was said to be the busiest this year, with 28,289 identification cards converted to REAL ID.

Sanders backs progressive challenger to Thanedar
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has declared his support for a progressive primary challenger to Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.), his first primary endorsement against an incumbent for the upcoming cycle. Sanders announced his support for Michigan state Rep. Donavan McKinney (D) on Tuesday, giving him his second congressional endorsement after Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) endorsed him last month. Sanders said in a statement that McKinney understands the struggles that working class communities are facing in Detroit and across the country because he's experienced them himself. 'A former union leader, he has dedicated his life to standing with working people, and is ready to lead the struggle against Donald Trump, the oligarchy, and the corporate interests who prioritize profits over people,' Sanders said. 'I'm urging all Michiganders to join me in supporting Donavan's campaign.' Progressives are targeting Thanedar after he fended off a primary challenge last year despite facing heightened scrutiny from the left. But they're hoping to be successful this time in Michigan's 13th Congressional District. McKinney has gone after Thanedar over his significant wealth and is seeking to depict him as an out-of-touch millionaire. He compared the two-term congressman to President Trump and Elon Musk in his campaign launch video and slammed the large amounts of money he lent himself during his last campaign. 'Senator Sanders has long been a progressive champion for working class Americans, and I am honored to receive his endorsement,' McKinney said in a statement. 'His political courage and his commitment to doing the right thing — even when it's unpopular, even when it's hard, even if he's alone — are a true inspiration to me, as is his commitment to fighting for a more just, more equal America.' Thanedar initially ran as a progressive for his House seat in 2022 but has faced attacks from the left over his self-funding and other issues. He's maintained that he hasn't changed politically and remains popular in his district. McKinney has also received support from the progressive group Justice Democrats.

Paxton to Launch Major Probe Into Non-Citizen Voters
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is investigating 33 potential noncitizen voters, The Dallas Express has learned. Thirty-three individuals are suspected of having voted in November's general election despite not being U.S. citizens. The case was referred to Paxton after the Secretary of State's Office flagged the registrations through federal data sources. Texas recently gained access to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services' SAVE database, which helps verify immigration status and naturalized or acquired U.S. citizenship. The system, operated under the Department of Homeland Security, is used by agencies across the country to validate immigration information. The development follows a March executive order signed by President Donald Trump that directed DHS to share database information with states. The order was designed to help ensure compliance with the National Voter Registration Act and the Help America Vote Act, which require accurate and current statewide voter lists. Separately, Paxton announced in May that multiple individuals were indicted in Frio County for alleged illegal vote harvesting. Those arrested included a county judge, a former elections administrator, Pearsall city council members, a Pearsall ISD trustee, and a suspected 'Frio County vote harvester.' The charges came after what officials described as a multi-year investigation into credible allegations of election misconduct. In October, Paxton investigated nonprofit groups allegedly registering voters outside Texas Department of Public Safety driver license offices — a practice that may have violated state law. Officials say the effort was uncovered through undercover operations in major metro areas. Gov. Greg Abbott announced that month officials had removed 1.1 million ineligible voters from the rolls since 2021, as The Dallas Express reported at the time. Paxton has repeatedly voiced concern about noncitizens casting ballots in U.S. elections, saying only American citizens should determine the outcome. He has pledged to continue investigating and prosecuting election violations.
