SP explains significance of Civil Rights Day

Nallamada: On Civil Rights Day, Sri Sathya Sai District Superintendent of Police (SP) Mrs. V. Ratna, IPS, emphasized that every citizen has the constitutional right to live freely and equally in society. She called for greater awareness of legal rights and encouraged citizens to seek justice through lawful means if their rights are violated. The Civil Rights Day event was held at the premises of the village secretariat in Nallamada with participation from people of all communities. SP Ratna attended as the chief guest and addressed the gathering.
She noted that in Sri Sathya Sai District, Civil Rights Day is regularly observed in coordination with officials from all departments to promote awareness among the public. SP Ratna also pointed out that there are strict laws in place to protect women and children from indecent behavior and explained the importance of SC/ST laws. She outlined the compensations provided by the government to victims under such legislations. She guided women and children on how to safeguard themselves and recommended downloading the Shakti App to enhance personal safety.
The event also included speeches from officials who urged the public to make good use of the constitutional rights and raised awareness about the negative consequences of child marriages. Later, SP Ratna conducted an inspection of the Nallamada Police Station. Other attendees included DSP Vijay Kumar, CI Narender Reddy, SB SI Pradeep Kumar, Sarpanch Bharati, Deputy Tahsildar Sunitha, Superintendent Srinivasa Reddy, SI Mallikarjuna Reddy, and members of the SC/ST Vigilance Monitoring Committee including Narayana, along with people from various communities.

BJP activates Dalit outreach strategy for 2027 UP polls

With an eye on regaining ground among Dalit voters, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched an intensive outreach campaign across Uttar Pradesh targeting the Scheduled Caste (SC) community. The move is part of the party's broader strategy to consolidate its support base ahead of the 2026 panchayat elections and the 2027 state assembly contest. State general secretary (organisation) of the party is reaching out to the party's SC leaders and community members across the state (Sourced) State general secretary (organisation) Dharampal Singh is spearheading the party's outreach strategy, engaging directly with Dalit leaders, office-bearers and workers through a series of district-level dialogues titled 'Anusoochit Jaati Samvad' (Dialogue with SC community). Since May, Singh has travelled to over 10 districts, including Ayodhya, Bulandshahr, Unnao, Chitrakoot, Lalitpur, Jhansi, Agra, Azamgarh, Gorakhpur and Kushinagar, holding meetings that are being positioned as more than routine political events. 'All party leaders of the SC cell, office-bearers and grassroots workers are attending these sessions. They are briefed about various schemes and steps taken by the BJP government for the uplift of the Scheduled Caste community,' a senior BJP leader said. Participants are also being trained to mobilise support at the local level and inform community members about government initiatives, he added. The Samajwadi Party and Congress have come under frequent criticism during these meetings. At a gathering in Unnao on May 15, Singh urged participants to recall how Congress had 'conspired to defeat Babasaheb Ambedkar' in parliamentary elections. Dr B R Ambedkar had lost both his Lok Sabha elections, first in 1952 from Bombay North-Central, and again in a 1954 bypoll from Bhandara in Vidarbha. 'Highlight the difference in approach between the BJP and the opposition. While the BJP promotes respect and welfare of Scheduled Castes, the opposition lacks a development agenda and only spreads misinformation,' Singh has said at multiple events. The Scheduled Caste population forms around 21% of Uttar Pradesh's electorate, with Jatavs (11.7%), Pasis (3.3%), Valmiks (3.15 %), Gonds, Dhanuks, Khatiks (1.2%) and others (1.6%). Notably, of U.P's 80 Lok Sabha seats, 17 are reserved for Scheduled Castes. In the 2024 general elections, the BJP's performance saw a decline, winning 33 seats compared to 62 in 2019. Party insiders attribute the fall in numbers to the shift of SC and OBC voters towards the PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) alliance led by the Samajwadi Party, which secured 37 seats. Congress won seven seats, while BJP allies Rashtriya Lok Dal and Apna Dal (Soneylal) won two and one seat, respectively. Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) also clinched one seat.

‘Not fit for aircraft, go stitch slippers': IndiGo staffer alleges casteist abuse in office

Gurgaon: An FIR was registered against three officials of IndiGo Airlines after a colleague accused them of subjecting him to caste-based harassment and humiliation at the company's corporate office in the city. IndiGo Airlines did not respond to requests for comment on the FIR. The complainant, a 35-year-old trainee pilot from Bengaluru, accused his seniors Tapas Dey, Manish Sahani, and Captain Rahul Patil of verbal abuse and discriminatory behaviour during a meeting on April 28 at Emaar Capital Tower 2 — where the airline is headquartered. The victim alleged that the harassment began immediately after he arrived in office when Dey demanded he leave his phone and bag outside in a "demeaning manner". "His instruction set the tone for the abuse that followed," he said in his complaint. The trainee pilot claimed that the three officials made casteist remarks during the 30-minute meeting from 3.30pm, which included statements like "you are not fit to fly an aircraft, go back and stitch slippers" and "you don't even have the worth to be a watchman here". He alleged that the harassment continued for days and was designed to pressure him into resigning. "The statements they made were not only humiliating but clearly aimed at degrading my identity and status as a Scheduled Caste person," the complaint read. The harassment allegedly extended beyond verbal abuse. It included "professional victimisation" through unjustified salary deductions, forced retraining sessions, revocation of travel privileges, and unwarranted warning letters. The FIR at DLF-1 police station was lodged under sections 3(1)(r) and 3(1)(s) of the SC/ST Act, which deal with intentional insults or intimidation meant to humiliate a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe member in public view. The case also included sections 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and 3(5) (common intention) of BNS. "We have begun collecting evidence and will soon record the statements of all parties involved," assistant sub-inspector Dalwinder Singh said.

Plea in HC against Rayagada collector's 2-month entry ban against Patkar, 24 others

Cuttack: Orissa high court on Friday began hearing a petition challenging an order issued by the Rayagada collector on June 4, which prohibits activist Medha Patkar and 24 others from entering or staying in the district for two months. The ban was imposed ahead of a public meeting scheduled for June 5 at Hatpada field in Sunger under Kashipur block, where Patkar and other activists were expected to protest against proposed bauxite mining in the Sijimali hills. Citing law and order concerns, collector Parul Patwari acted on a report from the SP stating that the presence of the group might disturb public peace and hinder administrative functioning. The matter reached the HC through a petition filed by Dr Randall Sequeira, a Bhawanipatna-based medical practitioner who was among those barred. Sequeira contended that the order severely hampers his ability to provide essential medical services to tribal communities in Rayagada and Kalahandi, where he has been offering free healthcare for years. Appearing for the petitioner, advocate Afraaz Suhail argued that the prohibition was arbitrary, disproportionate and violated constitutional rights. He highlighted that the planned protest was a daylong event, and imposing a two-month district-wide ban not only lacks justification but reflects "non-application of mind" by authorities. Taking note of it, Justice S K Panigrahi sought responses from the Rayagada collector and SP. Additional govt advocate Debashish Nayak was directed to obtain necessary instructions. The matter has been posted for further hearing on Tuesday. The petition asserts that equating peaceful protest in a scheduled area with a threat to public peace is flawed reasoning. It alleges that the administration's approach overlooks the nuanced balance between environmental concerns, indigenous rights and development policies. Sequeira maintained he has no links to any protest and fears the order unjustly tarnishes his record while depriving tribals of crucial healthcare services.
