Oklahoma Sooners a sleeper national title contender
The Oklahoma Sooners are one of the more popular teams in the nation to see an improvement from their 6-7 record in 2024. Though the opponents are the same, and Oklahoma has one of the five toughest schedules in college football, experts are high on what Brent Venables has done this offseason.
Though there's optimism the Sooners will rebound from their disappointing season in 2024, the Sooners still have a lot to prove. USA TODAY Sports Blake Toppemeyer believes Oklahoma could be one of the sleeper teams to contend for the national title. The odds are long at +6600, according to BetMGM, but the changes they've made could reap huge rewards.
More: SEC teams ranked from worst to first in odds of winning the national title
Oklahoma's roster looks substantially better on the heels of a losing season that sparked Brent Venables to bring in quarterback John Mateer from Washington State. Mateer's offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle, followed the quarterback to Norman to run Oklahoma's offense. Win-win. Another win: Landing standout running back Jadyn Ott, a California transfer. Oklahoma returned a lot of production, and it surely can't be as injury plagued as last season. That leaves the manhole, though, of arguably the nation's most daunting schedule, which could swallow even an improved Sooners team. - Toppemeyer, USA TODAY Sports
For years, Oklahoma had some of the best offenses in college football but were held back by their defense. Last year, it was the other way around. If Oklahoma wants to contend in the SEC and secure a College Football Playoff berth, everything has to come together this year. The defense must be as good or better than it was last year, and the offense must return to what is expected at Oklahoma. And as important as all of that, the Sooners need some good fortune on the injury front.
Brent Venables, Ben Arbuckle, and Jim Nagy made significant additions on both sides of the ball to give the Sooners a boost. But it's the offensive improvement that drives the optimism with Oklahoma. If John Mateer, an improved offensive line, and Jaydn Ott can find a rhythm early in the season, the Sooners will be tough to beat and a surprise contender in 2025.

MSU football joins rival Wolverines, others in offering 2028 in-state ATH prospect

Michigan State football has extended an offer to an in-state athlete that's trending on the recruiting trail. Mylan Griggs of Detroit announced on Sunday that he's received an offer from Michigan State. Griggs -- who is listed as an athlete -- announced the scholarship offer from the Spartans via a post on social media platform X. Griggs plays for Michigan high school powerhouse program Detroit Cass Tech, and is a member of the 2028 class. He is listed at 6-foot-0 and 160 pounds. Griggs is not yet ranked or rated on 247Sports or Rivals. But his interest on the recruiting trail would suggest he'll be a highly-rated prospect in due time. According to 247Sports, he now holds offers from Michigan State, Michigan, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Miami (FL), USC, Wisconsin, Army, Kent State, Marshall, Miami (OH), Southern Miss, UMass, Temple and Toledo. Michigan State has picked up a lot of steam on the recruiting trail in recent weeks in their 2026 class efforts. Hopefully, that'll also translate to the 2027 and 2028 classes with prospects like Griggs. Texas wins over 5-Star edge, but Texas A&M's recruiting momentum holds strong

As the saying goes, 'You can't win them all.' Texas A&M missed out on five-star edge rusher Richard Wesley out of Los Angeles, California, who shut down his recruitment after an official visit to Texas. If we're being honest, the Aggies were never truly in the running for Wesley. He took 10 visits between Oregon and USC, with Texas A&M managing just a single unofficial visit back in January. Wesley had a viral moment jumping into a pool with Oregon head coach Dan Lanning after committing to the Ducks, only to decommit two weeks later, hilariously. While a high-profile out-of-state recruit like Wesley choosing Coach Lanning wouldn't exactly shake things up in Aggieland, it's a different story when that level of talent commits to your in-state rival. That opens the door for serious social media banter and, more importantly, bragging rights in the recruiting rankings. As it stands, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko is on a recruiting heater, with the Aggies soaring to the No. 2 spot in the 2026 class rankings. Meanwhile, the Longhorns have entered the top 10 after two significant commitments. With early signing day just over five months away, every recruiting win—or loss—carries added weight. While missing out on Wesley wasn't a surprise, the momentum Elko is building in College Station is undeniable. The Lone Star rivalry is heating up, and both teams are racing toward December with something to prove.
