Himachal now sets Nov 2026 deadline for completion of Shongtong hydel project
The Himachal Pradesh government has set a target to complete the 450 MW Shongtong Hydroelectric Power Project by November 2026. Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced the new deadline while presiding over a review meeting with officials from the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL) and the energy department in the hill capital.
During the meeting, Sukhu directed officials to ensure timely execution of the project and prepare a power evacuation plan to avoid monetary losses once the project becomes operational. Once completed, the Shongtong hydel project in Kinnaur is expected to generate 1,579 million units of electricity annually, translating into a financial benefit of approximately ₹1,706 crore for the state.
Sukhu emphasised the need for a robust strategy to reduce power losses and curb electricity theft across the state. He instructed the HPSEBL to implement feeder metering and to carry out feeder-wise mapping of all consumer categories—including commercial, industrial and domestic—so that data can be accessed efficiently.
The chief minister has also directed that all HPSEBL employees currently serving on deputation in the directorate of energy, Himachal Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation and Power Corporation be given an option to return by April 30. The civil wing staff can also choose postings in the PWD or other departments.
Sukhu assured that the existing service terms, promotions and benefits would remain unaffected, with policy amendments being made where necessary.
To strengthen HPSEBL, the government plans to recruit 2,000 T-mates and linemen in the coming months.
Furthermore, Sukhu ordered the transfer of personnel posted in industrial areas for extended periods to promote transparency and accountability.

The Himachal Pradesh government said on Sunday that the state saw a significant improvement in the sex ratio -- a rise from 947 in 2023 to 964 in 2024. It attributed the improvement in gender equality to a growing societal shift towards valuing the girl child, reinforced by various schemes launched to support their well-being. The sex ratio is the measure of the number of females per 1,000 males in a given population. It serves as a crucial yardstick to measure gender equality. The state government said that the financial support for the marriage of girls from economically weaker sections continues to be a key focus area. Under the Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana, Rs 1,989.31 lakh has been provided as to help 3,956 girls at the time of their marriage. Likewise, the Mukhyamantri Shagun Yojana has extended support to 12,192 girls, with financial assistance of Rs 3,779.52 lakh as 'shagun'. These initiatives reflect the state's commitment to ensuring dignity and support for young women as they enter a new phase of life, an official statement said. Recognising the right of widows to remarry and lead a respectful life, the government has also extended financial assistance through the Widow Remarriage Scheme. Under this scheme, 239 women have been supported with an assistance of Rs 291.15 lakh, encouraging their reintegration into society with dignity and support. The welfare of orphan children has been given special attention under the Mukhyamantri Sukh Aashray Yojana, through which Rs 25.98 crore has been provided to support their overall well-being. For educational support, 9,859 children have received Rs 302.18 lakh under the scheme, helping them to grow and learn in a secure and nurturing environment. Besides, the state government took a historic step by passing the Himachal Pradesh Ceiling Land Holdings (Amendment) Bill of 1972. This step is helping promoting gender equality and empowering women. It addresses long-standing inequalities in property rights and shows the commitment towards social justice for women, the state government said. The initiative reflects the vision of the Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and is a bold step towards giving women greater financial independence and social empowerment across the state. Apart from this, the state government has also started the Indira Gandhi Sukh Suraksha Yojana, under which it will deposit Rs 25,000 with an insurance company for each of the first two daughters born in a below poverty line (BPL) family. The parents of the girl will receive a life insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh each. The deposited amount will be handed over to the girl when she turns 18 or any time before she reaches the age of 27. To support working women, the state government plans to build 13 working women hostels across key locations like Solan, Baddi, Palampur and Gagret, and the Medical Device Park in Solan. These hostels, to be constructed in this fiscal at a cost of Rs 132 crore, will provide safe, affordable and convenient accommodation for employed women, enabling their economic independence.

'By banning joint ventures, the Sukhu government is not only flouting the rules but also pushing many big companies out of the tender process. As a result, several companies were excluded, reducing competition. This pre-planned game paved the way for the government's favoured companies to step in and act together,' he said. He said this situation arose because the government banned joint ventures and excluded many companies from the tender process. Had more companies participated in the bidding, the tender could have been awarded at 25 to 30% less, potentially saving the state ₹ 75 to 90 crore, said Jai Ram. He further said that in light of these revelations, the government should immediately halt the tender process and investigate all allegations. The long-awaited Phina Singh irrigation project in Kangra district, which was started in 2011, was included under PMKSY in July 2024 by the Centre. The project aims to interlink Kalam Nallah and Chaki River — two tributaries of the Beas river flowing through Nurpur. It also involves constructing a concrete gravity dam across the Chaki river. Water from the dam is to be transported through a 4,307-m tunnel to irrigate 4,025 hectares across 60 villages in Nurpur.

Himachal CM gives directions for notices against developers over delay in hydropower projects
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed the Energy department to issue a cancellation notice to non-serious hydro power developers, whose projects have remained stalled for many years. He presided over a high-level meeting of the Power Department on Saturday. He said that undue delays in project execution are causing significant losses to the state exchequer, according to a release. Hydropower is the mainstay of the State's economy, and the state government is committed to ensuring that the benefits reach the people of the State. Sukhu said that the present state government is committed to safeguarding the interests of the state's people across multiple platforms and forums. In a major decision, the State Government has decided to take back 382 MW of the Sunni, 210 MW of the Luhri Stage-I, and 66 MW of the Dhaulasidh projects previously allotted to SJVNL. He said that the state government will not advance on upcoming projects like Kishau and Renuka Dam unless the neighbouring states provide the settlement of the long-standing concrete assurances pending the Bhakra Beas Management Board arrears. During the meeting, the Chief Minister was informed that BBMB has identified 4403 MW of power capacity on Bhakra Dam and 8700 MW capacity on Kol Dam for establishing pump storage projects. He directed the department to take the lead in this direction and move forward immediately so that the people of the State reap maximum benefits from these projects. Sukhu instructed the HPSEBL to commission the Kaza solar power project by August 2025 and expedite the one MW solar power project with battery backup at Dhanwas in the remote Pangi valley of Chamba district. This project is expected to be completed by December 2025 and will guarantee uninterrupted power supply to the 19 gram panchayats of the valley even during heavy snowfall. The Chief Minister also reviewed the progress of the 'Green Panchayat scheme' and directed the speeding up of the project. He also took stock of the under-construction 450 MW Shong Tong Hydro Power Project and asked the Power Corporation to complete it within the stipulated time period. Furthermore, it was also decided that the HPSEBL will establish five Substations with a 66 KV capacity, while the HPPTCL will set up 10 Substations with capacities of 132 KV and 220 KV in accordance with the directions of the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
