Ford Ranger plug-in hybrid first drive review

The Ford Ranger plug-in hybrid was announced sometime ago (back in 2023!) and finally we get to drive it ahead of its imminent arrival. Ford says its hybrid allows 'ute buyers to begin their electrification journey without sacrificing any of the core capability that they need from a truck.' And that's not far from the mark after getting an introductory drive across the Tasman.
Remind me again what it's all about
The powertrain of the Ford Ranger plug-in hybrid combines a 138kW/411Nm 2.3-litre turbo-petrol and a 75kW/300Nm motor. This lies between the engine and the 10-speed auto (or Modular Hybrid Transmission), drawing from an 11.8kWh NMC battery. Ford says that gives the Ranger PHEV a 49km EV range (ADR/NEDC).
You might wonder, is that enough though? Especially when GWM offers a quoted 115km for its PHEV ute, and the Shark is good for around 70km.
Ford cites its own connected-car data from Ranger owners around the world, which says they average 40km a day. Ok, some will be doing a lot more, but then for those that aren't a PHEV might be an option. Other connected-car data figures; 45 per cent of Ranger owners engage 4H and use the diff lock, 11 per cent use 4L, while 80 per cent tow. And on that, the plug-in Ranger has the same 3.5 tonne braked rating as the diesels. That's thanks to the total system output of 207kW at 6000rpm with 697Nm made at 2500rpm.
The PHEV uses Ford's full-time 4WD system with the on-demand 2-speed transfer case to vary the torque flow to the front wheels. This offers 2H, 4A, 4H, and 4L and a rear diff lock. So it's just as capable as a regular Ranger, as we found out.
It's a hybrid so there are a few drive modes including Auto EV, described as the best balance of the two power sources, EV Now is all electric drive (battery charge permitting), EV Later maintains charge if you want to keep the battery for later use, and EV Charge has the engine pumping more effort into charging the battery. It also has a Sport and Tow Haul mode and various off road modes, all of which use the Auto EV setting to gain access to maximum output.
What is the fuel consumption of Ford Ranger plug-in hybrid?
Ford rates the PHEV at 2.9L/100km via the NEDC test cycle, which is a far cry from 'real world' use. As with any plug-in hybrid, consumption depends on many factors. In Auto EV mode, plying mainly free flowing highway/freeway type roads, the Ranger was recording between 6.5 and 8.5L/100km, depending on the state of charge when we set out for each leg of the trip.
Compared to an XLT 4×4 bi-turbo, the 2527kg XLT PHEV is 251kg heavier, with a GVM of 3500kg (3230kg for the bi-turbo). The hybrid's payload is 973kg, bettering the 954kg of the diesel, but that is without the 39kg spare wheel, which is a no cost option for the hybrid. Departure and approach angles are similar, though ground clearance is inferior (215mm v 234mm) due to the battery underneath but wading depth of 800mm is unchanged.
The other difference is the shape of the tray. To accommodate the battery beneath, the deck is set 30mm higher. The Pro Power set up (truck as mobile electricity generator) has a 10-amp, 2.3kW socket in the cabin and twin 15-amp, 3.45kW plugs in the tray.
As to charge times Ford says it takes four hours at its 3.5kW (15A) AC max, while at 2.3kW (10A) it'll take seven. There are no DC charging capabilities.
The hybrid is only available as a wellside which could limit interest from those needing a cab chassis version and a more specialised deck for work purposes. Ford advises against the removal of the wellside because of the Pro Power gubbins, and also the electronic fuel filler release. A PHEV's fuel vapours and tank pressures need to be managed and so the fuel filler door is locked until the button is pressed and the vapour purged.
So how does it drive?
The powertrain is refined for a ute. There is adequate urge in EV running, and is suitably brisk in hybrid mode. This PHEV blends the power nicely when the engine kicks in, the delivery more linear rather than arriving in a big surge. You can't influence the amount of regen, which is mild, and while the brake pedal bites early, it otherwise feels okay under foot.
The hybrid has an extra leaf in its rear suspension to handle the additional weight, and the ride of the XLT we thought was a bit bumpier than usual. The heavier Stormtrak rode slightly better however.
Off road, and into 4L, diff lock on, the hybrid walked up a steep rocky incline as you'd expect any Ranger too. Activating 4L puts it into Auto EV for maximum output, and the low end torque gets the job done. The progressive delivery allows you to be smooth when needed, while the power is there for when you need to 'get into it' in order to make it up and over obstacles.
It's also capable in EV Now, cruising up a 60 per cent incline at a proving ground without the need of ICE intervention. It also slides around in the mud fine and waded simply through 600mm of water.
Any deal breakers?
What is harder to digest is the premium. The XLT PHEV is $82,990, some $15,500 more than the diesel version. That will be too much for some. The Wildtrak is $89,990, $13k more than the bi-turbo version while the launch edition Stormtrak is $94,990. That the Chinese offer hybrids with more electric range and cheaper price tags will make it that bit harder for the Ranger too.

2025 GWM Haval H6 GT PHEV Review'

PHEVs are going gangbusters in some parts of the world where EV range is now well over 100km. How does Haval's first effort rate? Range is critical in an EV, and likewise PHEVs, it would seem. The average PHEV range increased from 50km in 2019 to 80km in 2023. This year it will be higher again. Why? Because of the likes of this Haval H6. The Chinese are going bonkers on PHEVs. Thanks to that, there are now several PHEVs on sale here that offer over 100km of EV range. Some in China offer 245 to 300-odd km. This H6 GT PHEV is Haval's first example, offering 180km of electric travel from its substantial 35.4kWh battery pack. That's serious range, especially given it sells for $58,990. Pricing is similar to Mitsi PHEVs but there's over double the range. Fact is, there's enough EV potential for a week of in-town motoring. That means you can recharge it on a Friday night before a long weekend away, and have roughly 1000km of range at the ready. A quick 91 refill gives another 800. What about a battery refresh? And sensibly there's always electric power to help with overtaking because the system never lets the battery charge sink below 15 per cent. It also allows you to save the energy stored in the battery for urban use if you want. And you can recharge on the go, using the engine as a generator. Though it would seem they prefer you not to as it's not that straightforward to activate. Alternatively, you can plug in to a 48kW fast charger. It takes half an hour to replenish the battery from 30 to 80 per cent. A 7kW wall charger will do the job in three hours. Or 12 hours on a portable charger. So it all sounds rather peachy for those who just cannot be bothered with on-the-road recharging, or don't want EV range anxiety. The downside of a PHEV is using the engine too much. With most PHEVs, you can gobble up the limited EV range on day one. People then forget to recharge each night. When you run them like that, fuel economy won't be great. That's because the engine is tasked with propelling something much heavier. The H6 PHEV is 400kg up on its petrol equivalent (2075kg kerb weight). With much greater EV range, that gives you plenty of time to decide when you are going to plug in again. And then you'll only use the engine on long jaunts. In the urban setting, GWM suggests overall fuel use of 0.8L/100km (rightcar 1.0L/100km). It's around 5.4 otherwise. Any other downsides then? This isn't quite as dynamic as the regular ICE-power H6 models, despite decent Michelin Primacy rubber and its AWD status. It can be a bit squirrely in the wet. GWM has fettled the suspension for the increased weight to make it ride appropriately, which it really does. Brakes are uprated too but have an odd pedal feel. No mind, because high-level recuperation does most of the braking for you. We found the central IFT control screen disappointing. Repeated jabs and stabs were often needed, and it's a bit slow. Moreover, the layout is messy. Its saving grace is a pulldown menu for things you might want to turn off frequently. And voice control; use that when you can. While this H6 is mercifully free of warning bongs, it makes one loud one when you start it up and set off. Why is unclear, and no, you cannot cull it. The wheel spokes are oddly placed too, forcing a 10 past 2 hand position. Can it go? Can it ever! This can really tramp. That's the result of having a motor for each axle and a turbopetrol engine. Overall system output is 342kW and 762Nm. Strewth, that's a heap of grunt for a car costing this much. It can hit 100km/h in just under 4.9sec with LC and needs just over 3sec to jet from 80-120. It would be even quicker if the hybrid two-speed transmission didn't dither between first and second. Practically speaking this is sound. There's genuinely decent room for five grown-ups. And luggage capacity is 392-1390L. That's the same as for the Ultra GT AWD upon which it is based. The Haval H6 range gets more, however, 560-1485L, if luggage capacity is a big deal. Same with towing. The PHEV is good for 750-1500kg, while the H6 petrol can haul 2000kg of braked trailer. What else? Surprise and delight items include powered, heated and vented seats that are really comfy, a head-up display and surround camera. The overall shape is appealing too, though the rear window is tiny, and has no wiper. But the resolution from the reversing camera compensates. With all the new energy brands incoming, it is Leapmotor's C10 REEV at $49,990 plus ORCs that is the Haval's main rival. Sure, it has slightly less EV range (145km) but most will likely find that's enough for a week of urban travel. It's nowhere near as quick, however. The 0-100 claim is 8.5sec because the engine acts only as a generator for the battery. So it is reliant on its lone 158kW/320Nm motor for go power. If you want serious performance, and ridiculously low fuel use, go for the Haval which comes with a seven-year/unlimited km warranty. Kia Tasman first drive: Ready for the rough stuff?

Kia has finally entered the ute game. And not with a half-baked attempt, either. The Tasman – built on a ladder-frame chassis, armed with a torquey diesel, and styled to stand out – arrives in New Zealand as a genuine contender in a fiercely competitive segment. We travelled to Korea to drive the Tasman in preproduction form, and also got early seat time with a local-spec diesel prototype on New Zealand roads. The verdict? There's a lot to like already, and even more to look forward to once local tuning is finalised. Bold Looks, Real Utility Let's start with what you can't miss: the styling. The Tasman's looks have been a topic of debate online, but in person, the design comes together better than expected. There's a distinctive upright nose with vertical LED lamps that wrap around the corners. Some have raised concerns about their placement in off-road scenarios, but they're recessed behind a chunky black bumper that looks ready to take a knock. High sides, squared-off cab lines, and chunky black body cladding give the Tasman a tough, purposeful look – especially in the darker shades. The X-Pro variant, in particular, turns heads with its all-terrain tyres and rugged exterior touches. Around the back, there's a deep-lined tray with factory tie-downs, integrated step corners, and an in-tray 220V power outlet delivering 200W. That's enough to charge tools but not quite enough to run heavy gear like an EV's V2L system. One clever addition: a small lockable storage cubby behind the right-hand rear wheel arch – perfect for muddy boots or a tow strap. The tray itself is competitive in size and function. In the TX, TXR, and TXS variants, the tray measures 1573mm long, 1600mm wide, and 543mm deep, offering a volume of 1212L. In the X-Line and X-Pro, the tray is slightly shorter and narrower at 1512mm long and 1157mm wide, with a volume of 1173L. All variants feature multiple tie-down points, including in-tray rails and corner hooks, providing flexibility for securing loads. Big on Practicality Size-wise, the Tasman is a full-size ute. Measuring 5.4 metres long and nearly 1.9 metres wide, it goes toe-to-toe with segment staples like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux. Payload capacity peaks at just over 1,025kg, while all variants offer a 3,500kg braked towing capacity. Kia's accessory range is also extensive, with options including snorkels, electric roller covers, roof racks, and load slides. No doubt the aftermarket will be jumping in too. You can tell thought has been put in for add ons, for example the roof rails have been rated for a hefty 100kg. A Proper Cabin, Finally Step inside, and this is where Kia sets a new benchmark for the segment. The Tasman's interior doesn't feel like it belongs in a workhorse. Instead, it borrows heavily from Kia's SUV playbook, particularly in the X-Line and X-Pro trims. For those – like me – that thought the BYD Shark was a step forward for ute interiors, be prepared to be shocked. This is, without question, the best interior in the ute segment. It's not even close. The materials, layout, screen integration, and features are more akin to a luxury SUV than a light commercial vehicle. Like other Kias, the panoramic display houses dual 12.3-inch screens: one for the instrument cluster, the other for infotainment. Kia's interface is responsive, and physical shortcut buttons remain below for climate and media functions – a relief in today's touch-heavy world. Seat materials and finishes vary by grade. Lower trims get cloth or composite leather, while the upper variants go all-in with ventilated and heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, premium Harman Kardon audio, and even a sunroof. Perhaps the most surprising feature? Sliding and reclining rear seats in the X-Line and X-Pro – a first in the segment. These seats tilt back via a clever mechanism that moves the base forward, increasing comfort without sacrificing cabin space. It's a small but meaningful touch, especially for families using the rear row on longer trips. Rear-seat flexibility is also excellent. The base cushions flip up and lock in place, freeing up a huge floor space for tools, gear, or groceries. Hidden trays under the seat bases keep smaller items stowed away neatly. Powertrain and Pricing All New Zealand-bound Tasmans are powered by a 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel making 154kW and 440Nm. It's paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission that's been recalibrated specifically for ute duty. The transmission is one of the Tasman's strengths, providing crisp, intelligent shifts in a range of driving scenarios. There are five trim levels, all with 4WD and a double cab bodystyle at launch: Model Price (NZD, +ORC) TX 4WD $52,690 TXR 4WD $58,690 TXS 4WD $62,690 X-Line 4WD $69,690 X-Pro 4WD $79,690 A single cab chassis and a double cab chassis variant will join the lineup in early 2026. For now, all five models land in Q3 2025 with comprehensive spec lists. Even base models get LED headlights, a trailer brake controller, and terrain mode selection. From the TXR up, you gain extras like 18-inch alloys, dual 240V outlets, mood lighting, and wireless phone charging. The TXS and above bring a surround view monitor, heated seats, second-row slide and recline, and upgraded upholstery. X-Line and X-Pro models add an electromechanical rear diff lock, underbody protection, and enhanced off-road software, including a ground view camera. Kia Connect – the brand's remote services and OTA update system – is included free for five years across the range. On the Road (and Off It) In Korea, we tested the petrol model with 206kW and 422Nm – a powertrain not destined for New Zealand. That engine felt strong and refined, but even more impressive was how well the eight-speed handled the delivery. There's little lag, and the gearbox stays in the sweet spot without hunting unnecessarily. Ride quality on Korea's smooth highways was polished, quiet, and controlled – a promising preview, though not the whole story. On New Zealand roads, we sampled the diesel in preproduction form. That same eight-speed transmission remains a highlight, working well to deliver mid-range torque and clean shifts. Kia has done a good job isolating diesel noise and vibration too – it never clatters, and the cabin remains calm under acceleration. However, the unladen ride on local highways felt less composed than in Korea. Like many leaf-sprung utes, the Tasman can feel jittery at the rear when running empty. Kia is aware of this and has confirmed a specific Australasian ride and handling tune is underway ahead of launch. If it lands right, the Tasman could seriously challenge the benchmark set by the Ranger and Amarok. Steering is light and consistent but not overly communicative. Kia has done well to isolate road shock, though that comes at the expense of some road feel. Still, for most ute buyers, comfort and predictability outweigh pure feedback. Serious Off-Road Credentials Off-road, the Tasman impressed. Ground clearance, wading depth, and traction systems are all up to spec. A rotary dial lets you toggle between 2H, 4H, 4A, and 4L – giving you full control over the drivetrain. Kia's off-road interface includes tyre pressure, pitch and roll monitoring, and a front-facing camera under the vehicle. There's also a terrain mode selector for snow, mud, sand, and rock – depending on your 4WD setting. One standout feature is the 'X-Track' low-speed off-road cruise control system. It manages throttle and braking automatically at speeds up to 6km/h, allowing drivers to focus solely on steering. We tested X-Track on a prepared off-road course in Korea, where it performed confidently – and it's the sort of feature that should shine in serious low-speed crawling back home. Fully prepared Kia might be late to the ute party, but they've shown up fully prepared. The Tasman brings fresh thinking to a well-trodden segment, combining genuine off-road ability with modern cabin comfort and standout tech. Yes, the styling is divisive, and the unladen ride on local roads needs refining – but both are solvable. Once local suspension tuning is complete, the Tasman has every chance of sitting among the segment leaders.
