Is ChatGPT Catching Google on Search Activity? [Infographic]
This story was originally published on Social Media Today. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Social Media Today newsletter. Is Google at risk of losing its online discovery crown to ChatGPT? Well, not yet. As you can see in this overview of online search traffic, put together by the team at Visual Capitalist, OpenAI's chatbot still lags Google by a significant margin, and with Google also incorporating its own AI answers, it may still be able to fend off rising competition from ChatGPT, and maintain its place as king of the heap. Based on data presented which was presented by NP Digital at Web Summit 2025, Google still leads the way in overall web search activity, facilitating some 13.7 billion searches per day. Instagram comes in second (6.5 billion searches per day), though interestingly, Snapchat and LinkedIn also rank high for daily search activity, higher than Facebook, Microsoft's Bing and Pinterest. I would have assumed that all of these would see more search activity than Snap, but NP Digital says that the data has been sourced from multiple sources. Which could also point to variances in tracking process. Either way, the topline note is that ChatGPT still has a long way to go to become the key search engine, though it is growing fast, and as more and more people converse with AI chatbots, it's quickly becoming a more habitual search process. Valkyries join call for better pay: ‘We're fighting for a fair share'
Golden State Valkyries players Kayla Thornton and Tiffany Hayes joined a chorus of WNBA players on Sunday in calling for a better collective bargaining agreement from the league. Following the Valkyries' 87-63 blowout of the Connecticut Sun at Chase Center, Thornton opened the postgame news conference with a statement about the upcoming CBA negotiations between the WNBA and the Players Association. 'On behalf of my teammates and every member of our union, I want to be clear, we remain committed to negotiating the next CBA with the league and the team in good faith and privately,' she said. 'But we do want to set the record straight, not for the headlines, but for the fans to support us and deserve transparency about what's at stake.' Hayes added, 'This is a defining moment for the WNBA as the league grows, it's time for a CBA that reflects our true values. We're fighting for a fair share of the business that we build. It's business, we're not fighting for anything unreasonable.' Players across the league offered similar statements during their media availabilities on Sunday. Indiana Fever players Sophie Cunningham and Sydney Colson read the same statement as Thornton ahead of their game against the Las Vegas Aces, while Chicago Sky forward Elizabeth Williams also told reporters, 'the current system is unsustainable.' The current CBA expires at the end of this season, and player salaries are expected to increase significantly. This season, the minimum salary is $66,079, but the WNBA agreed to a record 11-year, $2.2 billion media rights deal — about $200 million per year, more than triple its previous deal. The WNBPA posted on Instagram on Sunday: 'It's time. As the league grows, it's time for a CBA that reflects our true value. We're fighting for a fair share of the revenue we generate. If not now, when?' In October, the union opted out of the league's current CBA in anticipation of negotiating for increased salaries. In March, Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese and Dallas' DiJonai Carrington hinted that the players would be willing to strike. Front Office Sports reported Sunday that players wanted to make 'significant headway' in bargaining for a new CBA before the WNBA All-Star Game in Indianapolis on July 19. Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase offered support for the players in her postgame presser. 'A huge reason why I wanted to work in the W was, how can I help, and how can I impact?' she said. 'As this league is growing, I want to help, too. I want to do whatever it takes so they what they want and to get what they deserve. So I'm supporting them 100%.' Thornton and Temi Fagbenle, who is currently away from the team for EuroBasket, are the team's Player Association representatives. The WNBA said in a statement on Sunday, 'The WNBA continues to meet regularly with the Women's National Basketball Players Association and engage in constructive dialogue as part of our ongoing collective bargaining discussions.'

McDonald's to suffer massive boycott from customers
Over the past year, McDonald's (MCD) has struggled to resonate with consumers after facing backlash for dramatically hiking its menu prices during inflation. To add fuel to the fire, it also suffered a temporary E. coli outbreak in a few of its restaurant locations in October, further scaring away customers. Amid these challenges, McDonald's sales have declined over the past few financial quarters, despite its efforts to win back customers with menu changes and deals, and the trend continued during the first few months of this year. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter McDonald's first-quarter earnings report for 2025 revealed that its U.S. comparable sales decreased by 3.6% year-over-year. This contributed to the company facing a 3% year-over-year decline in its operating income, which is its profit after paying operating expenses. Related: McDonald's CEO sounds alarm on major customer problem Also, according to recent data from the number of customers that visited McDonald's stores during the quarter fell by 2.6%. During an earnings call on May 1, McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski said that the "impact of inflation and heightened anxiety about the economic outlook" impacted sales during the quarter. "We entered 2025 knowing that it would be a challenging time for the QSR industry due to macroeconomic uncertainty and pressures weighing on the consumer," said Kempczinski. "During the first quarter, geopolitical tensions added to the economic uncertainty and dampened consumer sentiment more than we expected." As McDonald's struggles to attract customers to its restaurants, it has another major problem on its hands that threatens to impact sales. Between June 24 and June 30, the fast-food chain will face a major boycott from customers, which The People's Union USA is organizing. The group previously organized boycotts of Amazon, Walmart, and Target earlier this year. In a recent Instagram post, The People's Union USA founder John Schwarz said that the group is calling for a boycott of McDonald's for five reasons. First, he alleges the fast-food chain pays "less in taxes than the people serving their food." "McDonald's benefits from loopholes and offshore tax havens, allowing them to pay a fraction of what they should," he wrote in the post. "Meanwhile, their minimum wage employees pay more in effective taxes than the billion-dollar corporation they work for." Related: McDonald's announces major store change to win back customers Second, he claims McDonald's is "one of the worst offenders of price gouging" as it has "dramatically raised prices in the last few years," despite raking in record profits. Third, Schwarz claims McDonald's "has a long history of anti-union tactics, silencing employees, and avoiding accountability." "They use franchise loopholes to dodge direct responsibility while lobbying against higher wages and benefits," wrote Schwarz. Fourth, he alleges that McDonald's exploits "global supply chains and environmental loopholes" as its supply chain is connected to "deforestation, poor labor conditions, and unsustainable agricultural practices." Fifth, he said McDonald's likes to "perform DEI for the cameras but fund the opposite." "While McDonald's runs DEI-focused ads, their political donations and lobbying often support candidates and legislation that undermine equity, labor rights, and marginalized communities," he wrote. The People's Union USA has been organizing "economic blackouts" of large corporations since February. So far, it has organized specific weeklong boycotts aimed at Amazon, Walmart, General Mills, and Target. Starbucks, Home Depot, and Lowe's are next on its list. According to the group's website, it aims to "expose corruption and exploitation" and "hold corporations accountable" through these boycotts. Amid heightened political tensions, more consumers nationwide are opting to protest with their wallets. According to a recent survey from CLYDE/Ipsos, 53% of Americans said that if a company takes a stand on an issue they disagree with, they are less likely to buy their products or use their services.
