Westbound I-696 roadwork to close lanes for more than a week in May
Additional lanes — and later, an entire section — of Interstate 696 are set to close next week, eventually requiring a detour, the Michigan Department of Transportation announced.
Beginning at 7 a.m. April 21 through late July, work on the median of westbound I-696, from Southfield to Lahser roads will temporarily narrow to just two lanes, which could lead to traffic delays.
Then, next month, starting at 9 p.m. May 9 and running for more than a week until 5 a.m. May 19, westbound I-696 will be closed from I-75 to M-10 so work crews can demolish the Church Street plaza bridge.
"We are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy," Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said this week of the state's road improvements, adding the efforts help "Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely."
Workers will take down 170 concrete beams.
For that, westbound I-696 traffic is set to be rerouted to southbound I-75, westbound M-8 (Davison Highway) and northbound M-10 (Lodge Freeway) to get back onto westbound I-696.
There also will be a local westbound lane with access to Bermuda Street, M-1 (Woodward Avenue) and Coolidge Highway.
One of Whitmer's campaign slogans when she ran in 2018 was "Fix the damn roads." Since then, she has sought to live up to it, including offering a $3 billion plan earlier this year that includes funds to help local communities fix local roads.
As part of Michigan's ongoing roadway construction project, MDOT said, 60 bridges are being repaired, including the rebuilding of the Church Street Plaza bridge that includes Victoria Park.
More: Michigan road funding efforts have stalled before. Can new plans break the traffic jam?
A walkway detour will be in place during the construction.
The eastbound side of the Church Street plaza bridge is set to be demolished beginning May 1 for approximately 10 days that will only affect the eastbound side of the freeway, which is already closed.
Next year, westbound I-696 will be rebuilt from I-75 to Lahser Road; and the last phase of the Restore the Reuther project will rebuild I-696 in 2025-2026, and in 2027, I-696 will have major road work done between I-75 and Dequindre Road.

Michigan offers several license plate choices. Many drivers keep things basic
Michigan has added new license plate styles in recent years, bringing back throwback plates from the 1960s — and letting Michiganders celebrate their favorite colleges. Despite the variety of options, the most popular license plate among Michiganders remains the "Pure Michigan plate," with 794,971 plates issued in 2024, according to the Secretary of State's office — outselling the other three state-themed options combined. The plate, originally introduced in 2013, is Michigan's standard license plate. Specialty plates typically cost more to place on a vehicle. There are about 8.6 million vehicles registered in Michigan, the Department of Transportation said. Here's a breakdown of each license plate in Michigan and their costs: The Mackinac Bridge plate showcases one of Michigan's most recognized landmarks. The bridge is featured in the center of the plate, with a yellow sunset creating a silhouette. Drivers requested 200,996 Mackinac bridge plates in 2024. The Water-Winter Wonderland plate allows Michigan drivers to celebrate the state's seasons. Drivers requested 348,964 plates in 2024. First issued in 1965, and re-issued at the beginning of 2021, it has a maize-and-blue design, similar to University of Michigan's colors. The Water Wonderland plate, originally issued in 1954, celebrates Michigan's rich heritage of tourism, lakes and waterways. The plate with the green-and white-design draws comparisons to Michigan State University's colors. Drivers requested 149,511 of these plates in 2024. The specialty plates cost an additional $5. The new throwback plates already had brought in more than $6 million in additional revenue for the state by mid-2024. In addition to the fee for a new plate, and the additional fee for one of the specialty plates, there is a $30 fee to request a new personalized plate, or a $15 fee to renew a personalized plate. The state offers options for special-cause plates. They cost $35 each, plus other fees, with $25 going to the organization. There are 15 different university plates available, 30 military or veterans plates and six for special organizations. Jalen Williams is a trending reporter at the Detroit Free Press. Ramp metering traffic lights begin on I-96 in Oakland County
Traffic lights started operating on some entrance ramps to Interstate 96 in Metro Detroit Wednesday, providing directions that transportation officials call "ramp metering" at the merges. The flex route area on I-96 opened in March between Kent Lake Road and the I-275/I-696/M-5 interchange in Oakland County. While this traffic setup is new to Metro Detroit, there already is a flex route on US-23 in Livingston and Washtenaw counties. The ramp metering affects eight entrance maps along that area of I-96 between Novi and Milford roads, the Michigan Department of Transportation reported. The meters will start operation in yellow flash mode to remind drivers to be cautious. But eventually, the lights will use the traditional green/yellow/red lights seen on intersetion traffic signals to indicate when oncoming traffic can take its turn. Drivers will have to stop at the pavement line, then proceed one at a time onto the ramp, when the red lights are active. MDOT has posted a video on its YouTube channel explaining to drivers how ramp meters work. "Ramp meters have been used in many other states to reduce crashes and improve travel times by controlling the flow of traffic entering the freeway. By breaking up platoons of entering traffic, the need for drivers already on the freeway to slow down is reduced and vehicles can merge more smoothly onto the freeway," MDOT says. The above video originally aired on June 17.
