(Reuters) -Real Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini celebrated reaching the Conference League final on Thursday, but stressed that securing a Champions League spot in LaLiga remains his top priority.
A decisive extra-time goal from Abde Ezzalzouli secured Betis a 4-3 aggregate win at Fiorentina in the Conference League second semi-final leg, sending the Seville club to its first-ever European final.
"My satisfaction is logical. It makes me much happier to see the joy of the Betis fans. We felt a little bit indebted, with the need to give the Betis fans this kind of joy," Pellegrini told reporters.
Pellegrini and Betis will now face Chelsea in the final but the 71-year-old insists that ending the Laliga campaign on a high note is the first priority as his side are sixth with 57 points, a single point behind Villarreal.
"From tomorrow we leave the Conference League out because we have four very important league games left to aim for the Champions League until the end of the season," he said.
"We are very happy to reach the final, and even more so with Chelsea and I sent (manager Enzo) Maresca a message a long time ago being very happy for him."
For manager Raffaele Palladino and Fiorentina, the mood was somber as the Conference League continues to resemble a cursed campaign for the Italian side.
Fiorentina have reached the last two finals only to be undone by late deciding goals — a painful pattern that has continued into the semi-final of this season's edition.
"Undoubtedly, this is a painful wound for the team and I must now do well to steer them through. We've had other disappointments, this is a group of great men and I am sure they will be able to react straight away," Palladino told Sky Sport Italia.
"I could not really have asked for anything more from my lads, they fought hard and showed heart, we threw on every forward we had left. There are regrets, but I am proud of my lads, they gave their all to the very end."
Fiorentina have three matches left in Serie A to make one final attempt at securing European play next season, as they sit eighth with 59 points, four behind Juventus in the last Champions League spot.
"We must be good at resetting: tonight we won't sleep, but from tomorrow we'll focus on Venezia (match on Monday) and finishing the league well," Palladino said.

Salah leads PFA Player of the Year nominees list

LIVERPOOL forward Mohamed Salah was among six players nominated for the Professional Footballers' Association Men's Player of the Year award on Friday. The 33-year-old played a key role in Liverpool's Premier League title triumph last season with 29 goals and 18 assists. The Egypt star was voted Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers' Association -- securing almost 90 percent of the votes, marking the biggest winning margin this century -- and is the firm favourite to land the PFA prize. Salah is joined on the shortlist by Liverpool team-mate Alexis Mac Allister, Arsenal's Declan Rice, Cole Palmer of Chelsea, Newcastle striker Alexander Isak and Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes. Palmer, who won the PFA Young Player of the Year award for 2023-24, was a surprise choice for the list given his struggles for Chelsea last season. Rice starred in midfield for Arsenal, hitting a career-high nine goals while adding 10 assists in 52 appearances in all competitions. Sweden striker Isak scored 23 goals for Newcastle as they qualified for the Champions League and ended a 56-year trophy drought by winning the League Cup. Fernandes was one of United's few bright spots in the club's worst top-flight campaign since 1973-74, with eight league goals and 10 assists. This year's awards ceremony will be held in Manchester on August 19.

NBA great Vlade Divac injured in Montenegro motorcycle crash

BELGRADE: Former basketball star and LA Lakers centre Vlade Divac is recovering today after breaking his hip in a motorcycle accident in Montenegro, hospital staff told AFP. The 57-year-old was injured late Thursday after falling from his motorcycle near the coast, said hospital spokeswoman Ljubica Mitrovic. "Divac was immediately brought to the hospital in Risan, where doctors conducted thorough examinations," she said, referring to a town about 47 kilometres (29 miles) west of the capital Podgorica. "Unfortunately, it was confirmed that he had suffered a hip fracture. Surgery was performed." Divac is in a stable condition at the hospital. Drafted into the NBA in 1989 by the Los Angeles Lakers, the towering centre became one of the first European players to make an impact in the league. He played seven seasons for the Lakers before moving on to the Charlotte Hornets then the Sacramento Kings, and eventually finishing his NBA career back with the Lakers. Mentored by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, he quickly adapted to the NBA and became the first player born and trained outside the United States to play more than 1,000 games in the league. A silver medallist in Olympic basketball with both Yugoslavia and later Serbia, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019 and the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2010. He played 117 games for the national team of Yugoslavia and later Serbia and Montenegro, winning World Championship titles in 1990 and 2002, and was also crowned European champion in 1989, 1991, and 1995. The hospital has asked the public and media to respect Divac's privacy during his recovery. - AFP
