Ward hands Filis first Republic of Ireland call-up
New Republic of Ireland manager Carla Ward has included Melisa Filis in her squad for this month's Nations League B double-header.
Charlton Athletic midfielder Filis qualifies through her Mayo-born mother and has been called up for the first time after receiving international clearance from Fifa.
Ward is without a host of experienced players for her first panel with the quintet of Lily Agg, Jamie Finn, Jess Ziu, Louise Quinn and Tara O'Hanlon all unavailable, while Niamh Fahey, Diane Caldwell and Julie-Ann Russell have retired from international football since the side's last outing.
Former Aston Villa manager Ward, 41, replaced Eileen Gleeson last month and has signed a contract through to the 2027 World Cup.
Gleeson's contract was not renewed by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) following the team's defeat by Wales in December's Euro 2025 play-off that saw them miss out on place at this year's finals in Switzerland.
Ward's first game in charge will be at home against Turkey on 21 February before they travel to Slovenia four days later.

Ward also finalised her coaching team this week with Amber Whiteley coming in as an assistant coach to add to a group that already includes assistant head coach Alan Mahon and goalkeeping coach Emma Byrne.
"I'm delighted to bring this group of talented professionals and brilliant people together to work with our players for what will be an exciting Uefa Nations League campaign that then leads us into the qualifiers for the 2027 Fifa Women's World Cup," Ward told the FAI's website.
"We will only succeed if we work together as a team, on and off the pitch, and everyone is already playing their part in preparing us for the opening games."

Senegalese basketball players' US visas rejected, prime minister says, amid Trump travel crackdown
Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko said this week that his country canceled a planned training program for the nation's women's basketball team in the U.S. after several team members' visas had been denied. The cancellation comes after President Donald Trump earlier this month issued a travel ban for 12 countries — not including Senegal — citing national security risks. Earlier this week, Trump issued a warning to another 36 countries, mostly in Africa, saying they must increase vetting for travelers within 60 days, or be added to the existing list of banned countries. Senegal was one of the three dozen countries on Trump's new warning list, though it was unclear if the country's designation played a role in the rejection of the team members' visas. 'Informed of the refusal to assign visas to several members of the national women's basketball team of Senegal, I've instructed the Ministry of Sports to revoke purely and simply the 10-day preparation training course initially planned in the United States of America,' Sonko wrote in a statement posted to social media this week, adding that the training would instead be held in the nation's capital of Dakar. It was not immediately clear why the visas were denied. Benfica knock out Auckland in Club World Cup romp
Benfica's Argentine midfielder Angel Di Maria scored twice from the penalty spot against Auckland City (Federico PARRA) Benfica romped to a 6-0 win over Auckland City on Friday in a Club World Cup match in Orlando which suffered a long weather delay, with Angel Di Maria netting two penalties. With the Portuguese side leading by a goal at half-time the match was suspended because of a storm, eventually resuming two hours later. Advertisement Auckland of New Zealand, the only Oceania Football Confederation representatives at the tournament, were thrashed 10-0 by Bayern Munich in their Group C opener and this defeat means they are eliminated. Despite their eventual collapse, Auckland battled hard in the first half and almost made it to the break unscathed. Auckland goalkeeper Nathan Garrow made several good saves to keep Benfica at bay and the Portuguese side grew frustrated. Benfica took the lead deep into first half stoppage time when Gianluca Prestianni was clumsily felled in the area by Haris Zeb. Di Maria, who converted a spot-kick in the opening 2-2 draw against Boca Juniors, sent Garrow the wrong way.
