Absolutely dotty! Government blows over half a million on 'vanity' makeover for website which involved moving a full stop

Ministers spent more than £500,000 of taxpayers' money on a 'vanity' makeover for the government website which critics say is little more than changing a colour and moving a dot. The site, used by millions for essential services such as tax returns and passport renewals, will see its traditional black masthead turned blue and its 'dot' coloured turquoise. The tweaks were commissioned as part of 'brand refresh' with contracts totalling £532,000 handed to global ad agency M&C Saatchi. The costly new logo, set to go live this month, has already met with ridicule from civil servants, with one mocking online: 'Did someone really get paid to move a dot?'. Others labelled it 'cheap', 'tacky' and 'absolutely diabolical'. Zia Yusuf, head of Reform UK's efficiency drive, last night branded the revamp a waste of public money. He said: 'The disrespect for taxpayers' money continues to be astounding. 'Spending more than £500,000 on changing a logo on a government website is a joke at the taxpayer's expense, quite literally. 'This is just the kind of thing we have been uncovering in county halls on a daily basis. It's abundantly clear that Whitehall also needs a visit from Reform's DOGE team.' Two contracts for the brand refresh were tendered by the previous Conservative government and carried on under Labour, according to publicly available papers. Communications giant M&C Saatchi secured deals potentially worth up to £750,000. A government source said the final bill came to £532,000, which the cost drawn from existing department budgets. The new logo was criticised on web forums used by civil servants. One said: 'As a government we are trying to maximise efficiency and save money. 'Why was this what we chose to spend time and resources on?' Another joked: 'Reform blue for the dot. Conservative blue for the background. Are they preparing us for 2029?' Elliot Keck, campaigns chief at the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: 'Taxpayers will be baffled that hundreds of thousands have been blown on minor graphic design changes. 'At a time when public services are stretched and families are feeling the pinch, shelling out for a vanity rebrand is an insult to hardworking Brits. 'Ministers should be focusing on delivering frontline services, not petty optics.' Officials defended the cost, stressing the six-figure bill included 'refreshing and extending' the brand across web, mobile and app platforms. A government spokesman said: 'This was committed to by the previous government, with two of the three contracts signed and delivered by July 2024. 'The new government then chose to turn the rebranding and research work into consumer-friendly digital products, including our upcoming App, Chat and more.' MailOnline has contacted the government for further comment. The website was last overhauled in 2012.

Frankie Bridge declares trending fisherman sandals the ‘shoe of the summer'

Frankie Bridge has been sharing her summer fashion must-haves, which include these trending fisherman sandals from ASOS which she says are the 'shoe of the summer' Summer is all about finding the perfect pair of sandals, and this year the trending style to have in your wardrobe is a pair of fisherman sandals. The perfect hybrid between a breezy strappy design and a more closed-toe trainer look, the fisherman sandals are cool, comfortable and easy to style, which is why one of our favourites for fashion inspo, Frankie Bridge, declared them the 'Shoe of the season'. The exact pair she picked was the ASOS DESIGN Midas Fisherman Flat Shoe in Taupe Suede, which are still available for £60 in sizes three to eight. With their suede finish, caged design and gold hardware they're the perfect choice for looking luxe on a budget, whilst still keeping that all-important cool factor. Frankie's go-to ASOS sandals featured in her Frankie's Faves series on Instagram, where she styled them with a co-ordinating slouchy brown leather bag and a pair of rectangular sunglasses for an effortless off duty look. The Midas Fisherman Sandals are made from real leather with a brushed suede finish, which makes them soft and supple and comfortable to wear. The resin rubber soles are also flexible and soft, so you can walk around in them all day without getting aching feet. They fasten with an adjustable gold buckle at the ankle, so you can get the perfect secure fit. Whilst the ASOS pair have a thinner flat sole, if you prefer a slightly chunkier look, FatFace's Elodie Tan Brown Fisherman Sandal are a great alternative. Priced at £65, they have a thick rubber sole and a thicker cage-like design, with contrast stitching, and are perfect for getting that slightly more androgynous, laid back look. Shoppers have hailed them for how comfortable they are thanks to their cushioned soles, and they're available in sizes three to eight. Meanwhile Marks and Spencer's Wide Fit Suede Fisherman Sandals are ideal for those with broader feet, and feature a slingback design with a more fully closed toe. At £49.50 the M&S pair are also more affordable than Frankie's ASOS pick, making them great for anyone on a tight budget. Reviews have also praised the wider straps for being comfortable on thicker ankles, saying they're comfortable enough to wear all day. If you prefer a slightly edgier look, the ASOS Midas Fisherman Sandals also come in black leather as well as the taupe suede pair Frankie chose, and are also priced at £60 – although currently the size fives are reduced to £22.50. Whilst there's currently no reviews on the ASOS sandals, we're taking Frankie's endorsement as proof that they're a fantastic comfy pick for the summer.

I found the best lookalike for Birkenstock's studded sandals and they'll save you £100

Birkenstock's western-inspired studded sandals are perfect for summer, and we've spotted the perfect alternative pair that'll get you the same look for over £100 less If there's one pair of sandals that are a must-have for summer, it's a pair of double strap mules. The style is timeless and easy to style, and one of the most iconic designs for this kind of sandal is, of course, a pair of Birkenstock Arizonas. With the western aesthetic still trending (thanks in no small part to Beyonce 's Cowboy Carter tour), the Birkenstock Arizona Rivet Sandals in Dark Rust are the ideal way to bring the cowboycore look to your summer wardrobe on the days when it's too hot to don your cowboy boots. However with Birkenstock's pair costing £135 they're not always the most budget friendly pick, which is why we couldn't wait to snap up H&M's much more affordable alternative. Priced at £32.99, the H&M Studded Sandals are not only £102 cheaper than the Birkenstock pair, but they have a very similar look that lets you nail the western vibe without spending too much. They come in both black and brown shades, with the brown pair featuring silver studs, whilst the black pair have gold stud details. The double straps both have adjustable buckle fastenings, and the H&M sandals feature a comfortable moulded footbed that means you can wear them for hours at a time with no issues. The soles are also lined with satin, which helps absorb any moisture without creating friction or rubbing on your feet. Although they're made from 100% polyester, the straps have a very convincing suede-look finish, which makes them look much more expensive than they actually are. The hardware details also contribute to their luxe look, making them a great way to save money whilst still looking stylish. If you do want to snap up the real deal, Anthropologie currently has the Birkenstock Arizona Studded Sandals on sale for a limited time, reduced to £108. Meanwhile New Look has an ultra affordable pair on offer, with the Light Brown Faux Suede Studded Sandals on sale for £19.79, down from £32.99. However H&M shoppers have so far been thrilled with their Studded Sandals, giving them a solid five star rating. One wrote: 'Slightly awkward sizing, a little on the wide side but can be adjusted. Look fab.' Whilst another agreed: 'Comfy and stylish. Great value for money.' The sandals come in sizes two to nine. The brown colourway are currently out of stock in sizes seven and eight, whilst the black and gold pair currently only have size twos available due to how popular they are.
