Search for 34 missing cockfighting gamblers points to volcanic lake
Filipino authorities are investigating a claim that dozens of cockfighter enthusiasts who disappeared three years ago were killed and dumped in a volcanic lake.
At least 34 men - who had been accused of fixing cockfighting matches - disappeared without a trace in the capital Manila and its surrounding provinces.
Six suspects were later charged for kidnapping and on Thursday, one of them claimed in a TV interview that the victims were strangled to death and dumped into Taal Lake, which surrounds an active volcano.
Cockfighting - where people bet on roosters battling to death using bladed spurs tied to their feet - is a multi-million dollar industry in the Philippines.
The men are accused of being involved in livestreamed cockfights, which were popularised during the Covid pandemic when in-person matches were forced to shut. But this made the industry even more lucrative, generating some 620 million pesos ($10.8m; £8m) a month in licence earnings for the government.
A 2022 Senate investigation also revealed that daily bets on online cockfights ran up to 3 billion pesos ($52.4m; £38.8m).
But after the disappearance of the men, the livestreamed fights - known locally as "e-sabong" - came under scrutiny and then president Rodrigo Duterte eventually banned them. Traditional cockfighting is still legal in the Philippines.
On Thursday, Justice Secretary Crispin Remulla told reporters that authorities would look into deploying divers to look for human remains under the lake.
"We can't just let it pass and just let it go. We have to be responsible enough to seek the truth especially in cases like this," he said.
Remulla also added that authorities would look into the new development, adding that they are looking into finding more witnesesses.
Gambling is legal in predominantly Catholic Philippines even though church leaders are against it in all its forms.
Some online gambling operations have also been linked to criminal operations.
Last year, Filipino authorities uncovered massive scam centres and human trafficking rings hiding behind online casinos that serve mainland Chinese clients.
This led President Ferdinand Marcos to outlaw the online casinos known as Pogos or Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations.

Razaruddin says monitored ‘3R' cases weekly as IGP, but attacks against Faisal Halim and two other footballers remain unsolved
KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 — Former inspector-general of police Tan Sri Razaruddin Husain has revealed what were the biggest cases for him during his tenure, and which cases he could not resolve in time. Speaking to Malay daily Utusan Malaysia, Razarudin said cases involving the so-called '3R' issues — race, religion, royalty — were top. 'I monitor them monitored weekly, by ensuring that investigations were completed within seven days and reports submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers, unless specific instructions are received requiring a shorter time frame of three to four days to verify the findings,' he was quoted saying. He also highlighted other cases involving the Islamic faith, such as the deviant teachings linked to Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings Sdn Bhd (GISBH). In September last year, Bukit Aman announced a massive raid on 20 charity houses linked to GISBH in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, in which they rescued over 400 child residents and arrest nearly 200 people between the ages of 17 and 64. Razarudin also listed the fatal shooting of Customs Department deputy director-general Datuk Shaharuddin Ibrahim in 2013 as a remaining cold case. Shaharuddin was gunned down in a morning in April 2013, as one of two men on a motorcycle fired at close range when he stopped his four-wheel-drive vehicle at the traffic light at Lebuh Sentosa, Putrajaya. To this day, no one has been charged with Shaharuddin's murder although over 40 people were arrested and quizzed, but police believe that he was killed because of his operations against smugglers and a car syndicate. Razarudin also said that the police still cannot solve the attacks against footballers Faisal Halim, Safiq Rahim, and Akhyar Rashid. 'There have also been long-standing cases involving shootouts between gangsters in Kuala Lumpur and drug cartels fighting over power and territory, as well as the sale of counterfeit drugs,' he reportedly said. Yesterday, former director of the Special Branch Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail was appointed as the new Inspector-General of Police on a two-year contract beginning this Monday. Razarudin stepped down yesterday after a two-year term, previously succeeding Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani.

The Telegram founder recently revealed that he's dividing his massive fortune—an estimated $17.1 billion, per Forbes—between all 106 of his children. 'I want to specify that I make no difference between my children: There are those who were conceived naturally and those who come from my sperm donations,' Durov, 40, told French outlet Le Point in an interview published June 19. 'They are all my children and will all have the same rights. I don't want them to tear each other apart after my death.'
