Visit Qatar concluded a successful participation in ITB China 2025, which was held from May 27 to 29 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Centre.
ITB China is one of the most significant B2B trade shows in the Chinese travel market and serves as a key platform to highlight Qatar's tourism offering, foster strategic partnerships, and attract investment.
As part of its participation, Visit Qatar led a delegation of 16 hospitality and travel industry partners, including leading hotels and destination management companies. Participating partners included Discover Qatar, Qatar Airways, Banyan Tree Doha, Mondrian Doha, The Ritz-Carlton Doha, The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa, Steigenberger Hotel Doha, The Outpost Al Barari, The St. Regis Doha, and Marsa Malaz Kempinski, Noor Al Shams Tours, Peninsula Compass Tourism, Regency Holiday, Tawfeeq Holidays, Doha Bus and Ms SKY.
As part of its commitment to digital innovation, Visit Qatar participated in the C-Talk session at ITB China, where Jassim Mahmoud, director of PR and Communications, spoke about the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR) in the future of tourism.
He highlighted recent strategic partnerships with Microsoft and Huawei, which are supporting the sector's digital transformation.
China remains a key priority market within Qatar's tourism strategy, and Visit Qatar continues to invest in targeted outreach Chinese market, Mandarin-language services, and curated offerings tailored to the preferences of Chinese travellers.

Europe's lithium quest hampered by China and lack of money
Agencies Even the bloc's broader energy security and climate goals could depend on securing a steady supply of the key mineral, used in batteries and other clean energy supply chains. But Europe has run into a trio of obstacles: lack of money, double-edged regulations and competition from China, analysts told AFP. China has a major head start. It currently produces more than three-quarters of batteries sold worldwide, refines 70 percent of raw lithium and is the world's third-largest extractor behind Australia and Chile, according to 2024 data from the United States Geological Survey. To gain a foothold, Europe has developed a regulatory framework that emphasises environmental preservation, quality job creation and cooperation with local communities. It has also signed bilateral agreements with about 15 countries, including Chile and Argentina, the world's fifth-largest lithium producer. But too often it fails to deliver when it comes to investment, say experts. 'I see a lot of memoranda of understanding, but there is a lack of action,' Julia Poliscanova, director of electric vehicles at the Transport and Environment (T&E) think tank, told AFP. 'More than once, on the day that we signed another MoU, the Chinese were buying an entire mine in the same country.' The investment gap is huge: China spent $6 billion on lithium projects abroad from 2020 to 2023, while Europe barely coughed up a billion dollars over the same period, according to data compiled by T&E. At the same time, the bottleneck in supply has tightened: last year saw a 30 percent increase in global demand for lithium, according to a recent report from the International Energy Agency (IEA). 'To secure the supply of raw materials, China is actively investing in mines abroad through state-owned companies with political support from the government,' the IEA noted. China's Belt and Road Initiative funnelled $21.4 billion into mining beyond its shores in 2024, according to the meanwhile, is 'lagging behind in investment levels in these areas', said Sebastian Galarza, founder of the Centre for Sustainable Mobility in Santiago, Chile. 'The lack of a clear path for developing Europe's battery and mining industries means that gap will be filled by other actors.' In Africa, for example, Chinese demand has propelled Zimbabwe to become the fourth-largest lithium producer in the world. 'The Chinese let their money do the talking,' said Theo Acheampong, an analyst at the European Council on Foreign Relations. By 2035, all new cars and vans sold in the European Union must produce zero carbon emissions, and EU leaders and industry would like as much as possible of that market share to be sourced locally. Last year, just over 20 percent of new vehicles sold in the bloc were electric. 'Currently, only four percent of Chile's lithium goes to Europe,' noted Stefan Debruyne, director of external affairs at Chilean private mining company SQM. 'The EU has every opportunity to increase its share of the battery industry.' But Europe's plans to build dozens of battery factories have been hampered by fluctuating consumer demand and competition from Japan (Panasonic), South Korea (LG Energy Solution, Samsung) and, above all, China (CATL, BYD).

Temu launches in Turkey with one day delivery
Agencies Chinese e-commerce giant Temu has officially entered the Turkish market, launching local operations with an ambitious promise of one-day delivery through a new logistics hub in Istanbul, according to reports on Thursday. Temu, a subsidiary of PDD Holdings, has rapidly expanded globally in recent years by shipping low-cost products directly to consumers and taking advantage of customs exemptions for low-value goods. According to Turkish tech news outlet DonanımHaber, the company opened an operations office in Istanbul on Thursday and plans to establish a warehouse to facilitate direct domestic deliveries. Temu did not immediately respond to Daily Sabah's inquiry regarding the reported company has already relocated its billing and payment systems from Dublin, Ireland, to Türkiye, private broadcaster CNBC-e month, Temu representatives informed Turkish Trade Ministry officials that the company was taking steps to establish a representative office in Türkiye, according to Anadolu Agency (AA). The update followed a meeting between the ministry and company officials to address Temu's legal obligations and responsibilities related to e-commerce product safety. Officials reportedly told the company that, under new regulations, selling products without information about a locally established economic operator would not be permitted. Since last year, Türkiye has sought to rein in soaring imports amid surging demand for low-cost goods from platforms like government is now considering lowering the current 30-euro (about $34.50) customs-free threshold for international purchases to 22 euros, according to Mustafa Gültepe, chair of the Türkiye Exporters Assembly (TIM). The threshold was previously reduced from 150 euros in August last year. At the same time, import duties on packages from Europe were increased to 30% from 18%, while taxes on goods from outside the European Union were doubled to 60%.Current rules allow a maximum of five items per shipment, with no more than two of the same product, and limit each person to five purchases per month. According to data from the Interbank Card Center (BKM), spending on international shopping using Türkiye-issued cards rose by 40% last year, reaching TL 218 billion (over $5.5 billion).

China is set to be resilient to global trade shocks
The year started for China with a positive tone on the back of a turnaround in private sector sentiment, driven by a more supportive economic policy mix, optimism around the country's capabilities on artificial intelligence (AI), and a stabilization in manufacturing activity. Importantly, this came after years of subdued investor appetite and volatile growth on the back of real estate wounds, regulatory stringency, limited official stimulus, and the trauma from hard pandemic lockdowns. Such positive outlook and turnaround translated into stronger activity and constant upgrades in growth expectations since September 2024. However, global macro prospects were suddenly shaken by a radical shift in US trade policies in February, when president Trump announced a massive increase in import tariffs. China, in particular, was singled out by the US with 'embargo like' 140% tariffs and much less room for exemptions. After bilateral negotiations started, tariffs were reduced to a more manageable but still high 40% rate. Despite this major shock, China's economy appears to be resilient. In fact, across major economies, China seems to be the least affected by growth expectations downgrades since US tariffs 'Liberation Day,' even if the country is by far the largest exporter globally. In our view, three main factors sustain a more optimistic economic take on China in the face of the US policy shock. First, despite being the world's largest exporter and a key node in global manufacturing, the overall impact from US tariffs on China's growth is very limited. This is largely due to the declining importance of the US as an export destination and Beijing's strategic reorientation of trade flows. In the early 2000s, the US accounted for nearly 20% of Chinese exports, but this share has declined to around 15% in recent years, equivalent to around 2.8% of the country's GDP. Exports grew stronger in markets such as Southeast Asia, the EU, and Belt and Road countries, helping to offset US-driven losses. Moreover, exports themselves have been declining in overall importance to China's economic model, now contributing less than 20% to GDP – compared to 35% in 2006 – amid a policy-led pivot toward domestic consumption, high-tech innovation, and services. These structural shifts, coupled with adaptive trade strategies, have helped insulate China from the full brunt of Trump-era tariffs, reducing their macroeconomic impact and sustaining the country's external surplus. Second, tariffs are blunt tools in a world of fragmented supply chains, and China's central role in global production networks has significantly diluted their effectiveness. Unlike the bilateral trade flows of the past, modern goods cross multiple borders during assembly, making it hard to isolate national value added. Multinational firms adapt quickly, shifting final assembly to third countries while maintaining Chinese inputs through transhipment. These workarounds often outpace enforcement, undermining the intent of protectionist policies. Additionally, a substantial share of Chinese exports – such as critical components in electronics, machinery, and pharmaceuticals – are not easily substitutable and remain essential to US firms and supply stability. As a result, tariffs are unlikely to trigger reshoring and China is expected to retain its role as an indispensable link in global manufacturing. Third, US tariffs are expected to be offset by the devaluation of the Chinese renminbi (RMB), particularly in real effective terms, which is enhancing China's price competitiveness globally. Since the escalation of the 'trade war' in February, the RMB has weakened against the USD, but even more so against a broader basket of currencies, resulting in a meaningful depreciation of China's real effective exchange rate (REER). This has lowered the relative cost of Chinese exports in non-USD markets, helping Chinese firms gain market share globally despite higher US tariffs. The REER adjustment acts as an automatic stabilizer for China. In effect, the RMB's adjustment is helping to preserve or even increase external demand, ensuring continued export surplus, further underscoring the limitations of unilateral trade barriers. All in all, China's growth prospects this year remain moderately robust despite continued trade tensions. This is due to a structural decline in US export dependence, the ineffectiveness of tariffs in a globalized supply chain environment, and the competitive tailwind from a weaker RMB collectively cushioning the Chinese economy from material external shocks. — By QNB Economics
