Malaysia among countries setting an example in global women's leadership

Malaysia takes centre stage as it hosts the Asean Women's Economic Forum 2025, bringing together women leaders from over 32 countries to discuss empowerment and economic roles. - Bernama photo
KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia is among the countries that serve as a global example in providing space and opportunities for women to empower themselves and take on leadership roles, said ASEAN Women's Economic Forum (WEF) 2025 president Datin Dr Hartini Osman.
She said this was one of the main focuses of the forum, which serves as an open, inclusive, and voluntary platform that brings together women from around the world to voice their perspectives and strengthen their roles across various sectors. "Women Leaders Beyond Borders: Shaping the Future of the ASEAN Sheconomy" is the theme for the Asean Women's Economic Forum 2025, a platform dedicated to amplifying women's voices and fostering business and networking opportunities for female entrepreneurs and changemakers.
"WEF ASEAN 2025 serves as a gathering point for women not just from Malaysia, but across the region and globally. It is a voluntary, compassionate, and inclusive space that champions women's right to be heard,' she said.
"The most beautiful part is that they want to learn from Malaysia's example in how we provide space and opportunities for women through this forum,' she told Bernama after the opening ceremony of WEF ASEAN 2025, at the Dewan Perdana, Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), today.
The three-day forum, themed 'Women Leaders Beyond Borders: Shaping the Future of the ASEAN Sheconomy', was officiated by the Prime Minister's wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
According to Hartini, the forum, which involves participants from more than 32 countries, offers valuable opportunities for women entrepreneurs to expand their businesses and build networks through business matching sessions. It also encourages the participation of youth, students, educators, and changemakers to engage and benefit from the platform.
She added that this edition marks the 148th series of the Women's Economic Forum (WEF), which is active in over 150 countries in support of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to gender equality.
Hartini also expressed her gratitude to Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail for officiating the forum, describing her speech as deeply moving and resonant with participants, as it reflected values of humanity and compassion.
"She is a remarkable female leader, a symbol of motherhood, love, and truth. She leads by example, speaking on issues related to women, families, and the empowerment of women,' she said.
Touching on the challenges faced by women today, Hartini underscored the importance of unity in advocating for women's aspirations and achieving meaningful societal change.
"When we unite, our collective voice becomes powerful and truly heard. If we work sincerely, with pure intentions for the sake of Allah, then insya-Allah, the wellbeing of women will continue to be uplifted,' she added. - BERNAMA

KESUMA Approves RM1.5 Million For Northern Zone PHEKS
BUTTERWORTH, June 22 (Bernama) -- The Human Resources Ministry (KESUMA) has approved 124 applications for the Union Affairs Development Grant (PHEKS), amounting to RM1.5 million, for the Northern Zone, covering Perak, Penang, Kedah and Perlis. Human Resources Minister Steven Sim said this included 26 approved applications worth RM261,988 in Penang; 21 applications worth RM384,670 in Kedah; 15 applications valued at RM211,569 in Perlis; and 52 applications in Perak involving RM656,722. 'Overall, a total of 1,049 PHEKS applications were received this year from various trade unions nationwide, of which 551 applications amounting to RM7.15 million were approved,' he said. 'I hope this allocation will be put to good use to strengthen our unions,' he said at the Northern Zone PHEKS 2025 assistance presentation ceremony here today, which was also attended by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. This year, the government allocated RM10 million for the implementation of PHEKS, the highest in history, compared with RM5.8 million last year. A total of RM7.15 million was distributed to trade unions under approved clusters, while RM2.85 million was allocated for the outreach and community service programmes. Sim added that his ministry is targeting two million union members nationwide by the end of this year. He expressed confidence in reaching the target, noting that the number of new trade unions formed last year was five times higher than in previous years. He said the MADANI Worker Card initiative has also helped boost trade union membership, which currently stands at one million, by offering discounts of up to 30 per cent at over 200 companies providing essential goods and services to registered members. The PHEKS is a one-off financial aid provided to registered trade unions in Malaysia through the Department of Trade Union Affairs (JHEKS) under the KESUMA to support union-related activities.

Johari: Hire Local TVET Grads Or No Foreign Workers For Plantations
KUALA KANGSAR, June 22 (Bernama) -- The Plantation and Commodities Ministry (MPIC) has mandated that plantation industry players must first hire graduates from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes before considering the employment of foreign workers. Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said industry players must provide proof of their efforts to hire TVET graduates to the ministry before they are permitted to recruit foreign workers. "We are currently facing a situation where many industries are unwilling to hire graduates who have completed their training. They are reluctant to provide these students with the opportunity to gain practical experience because they prefer to take the easier route. "Although the government has approved foreign workers for the plantation sector, I will not allow it unless industry players contribute to our local youth," he said when met at the Dialog@MPIC session here today. Johari said the ministry will train about 250 TVET students annually in the plantation sector, and they will be placed in the industry based on the specific needs of the industry players. He said industry players must train these students until they become skilled and future specialists in the plantation sector. "I want to commend Sime Darby and FGV for their dedicated initiatives to provide accommodation and decent salaries for young individuals who did not attend university. These youths can earn a salary of RM2,500 if they develop their skills and complete a TVET Level 3 qualification, and in another eight months, they could earn up to RM3,500. "…we must support these students in developing their careers. Otherwise, we're abandoning these youths, and that's not what we promised. Some industry players even refuse to hire them, and that's why I want to enforce this prerequisite. Currently, we depend on nearly 260,000 foreign workers to manage our plantations," he said. Johari said the sector is vital as it represents the world's third-largest export industry, and within the national commodity sector, Malaysia exports approximately RM168 billion. He emphasised the need for industry players to take responsibility for mentoring and supporting these young talents.

Two Men In Penang Lose RM2.35 Mln In Investment Scams
GEORGE TOWN, June 22 (Bernama) -- Two men, including a senior citizen, suffered a loss of RM2.35 million after each fell victim to online investment fraud syndicates, in separate incidents in Penang recently. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said in the first case, the Commercial Crime Investigation Division (BSJK) of Seberang Perai Tengah district police headquarters received a complaint from a 57-year-old local man who is an insurance agent in Perai, yesterday after suffering a loss of almost RM1.5 million. "According to the man, he had seen a stock investment advertisement promising high returns on Facebook in December and the victim then contacted the female suspect via the WhatsApp application. "The investment offered various packages with promises of lucrative returns and the victim was interested in participating, before downloading the stock investment application and on Dec 30 made the first transfer of RM9,999 and earning a profit of RM18,400," he said in a statement today. He said that following that his confidence grew in the investment, the victim then made 35 money transfers between Feb 17 and April 24 into seven bank accounts belonging to different companies involving a total of RM1,495,176. Hamzah said the man only realised he had been a victim of fraud after failing to withdraw profits on the investment application and was even asked to make an additional payment. For the second case, he said a 73-year-old elderly man who is a retired accountant at a factory had filed a police report at north-east police headquarters yesterday after also falling victim to an online investment scam involving a loss of RM855,001. "According to the victim, he saw an investment advertisement for cryptocurrency investments that offered high profits in a short period of time on Facebook in March and the elderly person clicked on the advertisement link before contacting the female suspect via the WhatsApp application," he said. Hamzah said the victim joined and downloaded the investment application before making 14 transactions to five bank accounts belonging to different companies from April 15 to June 11, but did not receive any profits.
