What's Going On With AMG? Futuristic Sporty Mercedes Models are Coming
This much is clear: AMG makes fast cars. But what kind of fast? Is it musclebound bruisers like the G63? Luxurious tourers like the SL-Class roadster and GT hardtop? Or eco-chic hybrids like the measurably rapid yet socially maligned C63?

According to AMG CEO Michael Schiebe, the answer is: Yes—and soon, more.
As AMG-branded F1 cars raced by at the Miami Grand Prix, we sat down with Schiebe to learn what AMG is all about these days, and what to expect from Mercedes-Benz' legendary performance division.

Committed to Combustion and Electric Power
Schiebe is a busy guy. Not only is he in charge of AMG, but Maybach and the G-Class programs, as well, those being the three iconic pillars outside of Mercedes' typical passenger car business that aren't vans.
Having assumed the role in 2023, Schiebe told us how many results of his leadership are yet to be seen, saying, 'Before I took over, Mercedes had already initiated a tremendous change program within AMG. It had been decided that AMG would stay on the combustion engine side, but in parallel go all in on the electric side—AMG will create our first high-performance EV. I would say I just accelerated that process.'
Things have changed since we last spoke with Schiebe. When asked how AMG would position and distinguish its forthcoming EVs from its revered combustion cars, Schiebe downplayed the need. 'There won't be such a difference between them, because all these cars need to be an AMG first and then an ICE or EV second. When you buy an AMG, you buy the performance, the emotion.'
Still, Schiebe knows that AMG EVs' performance must not be one-dimensional. 'Some of our customers go, for example, with their car on the weekend to the famous Nordschleife. They want to have a track-proved high-performance car. That will be true of our electric cars, too.'
The AMG.EA Platform
Following the Vision AMG high-performance EV concept's debut, details of the forthcoming AMG.EA all-electric vehicle platform have begun to come to light. Schiebe provided more, saying, 'Most electric cars have great acceleration, so that's not a differentiator. Some EVs lose steam if you repeat that several times. Our cars need to be capable on a racetrack, where it's constant acceleration and braking. We took our time to make sure that AMG.EA cars will provide continuous performance.'
The first vehicles to be built on the AMG.EA platform will be a four-door fastback akin to the aging AMG GT, and a full-size SUV.
Fast charging and thermal management are key to this track potential. Schiebe implied that the direct cooling approach for high-voltage batteries in AMG E-Performance hybrids will inform strategies for the AMG-specific battery to be built into the AMG.EA platform. Compact and power-dense axial flux motors are confirmed, to be provided by Yasa Ltd., a British company acquired by Mercedes-Benz in 2021.
Learning From C63
AMG has much to prove with AMG.EA, given how its current EVs so far don't do much well beyond go very quickly in a straight line. Meanwhile, its hybrids have earned inconsistent acclaim; hybridization suits the V-8-based S63's hyper-limo character but takes too much priority to satisfy the I-4-equipped C63's rowdy brief.
Addressing the C63's tepid reception, Schiebe concedes, 'We probably could have better explained the technology to our customers. There are pure V-8 fans, and it's hard to convince them of this four-cylinder hybrid technology.'
In a seemingly coded admission that going this route for C63 isn't working and that change is coming, Schiebe said, 'It's my job to do a constant review of our portfolio. I'm pretty confident that we will fulfill our customers' dreams in the next two to three years,' although he refused to speculate on which model AMG will bring the 'right' powertrain to.
Future Exclusive AMG Models
Zooming out from any specific model, AMG has taken and will continue to take a focal role at Mercedes-Benz, where future AMG models may share less and less with its parent company's cars.
According to Schiebe, 'Customers love the distinctive AMG look and the differentiation it brings. Our future cars will be more expressive in that dimension. If you look into the future, I would say you can expect cars that will be more visually differentiated—AMG will be doubling down on design; our design language will be more expressive.'
He continued, 'In the next two to three years, you can expect the biggest portfolio rollout of AMG cars in decades. This is why my team is under high pressure, because we have so many cars in the pipeline. In the coming years, we will just launch one after another, both on the electric side, but also on the combustion side.'
Schiebe stated that 'brand shapers' will highlight those endeavors, at least one of which will likely be based on the forthcoming AMG.EA platform. However, Schiebe says AMG 'will invest further into small-volume special series cars that meet very specific customer demands.'
Noting the gulf in price and performance between the AMG One hypercar and hardcore yet mass-production-based AMG GT Black Series, Schiebe reiterated his position that 'there is more space for small production cars' within the AMG portfolio.
How those will shape up remains to be seen, but under Schiebe's direction, AMG will offer more cars, coupes, and crossovers with gas, hybrid, and electric powertrains—all built for speed and performance—than it ever has before.

Kirkland's Home is closing dozens of stores in new rebrand, adding to list of retailers shutting locations in 2025
Dozens of Kirkland's Home stores will close as part of the retailer's recently announced rebranding efforts. Some existing stores will be converted to Bed Bath & Beyond Home stores as part of the transformation, the company said this week. Kirkland's will streamline its footprint by closing at least two dozen of its 313 existing Kirkland's Home stores. The company will launch its first Bed Bath & Beyond Home store in Brentwood, Tennessee, in August 2025, with five stores to follow. Pending the initial market launch, the retailer intends to open approximately 75 additional stores through 2026. The Tennessee-based retailer also plans to open its first physical Overstock store location in Nashville, with about 30 additional stores to open after the initial launch. These plans align with Kirkland's broader goal to be a multi-brand retail operator. 'By consolidating real estate and leveraging underperforming store closures to reduce excess inventory, we believe we will drive faster inventory turn and maximize return on assets,' the retailer said in a press release. 'Following the consolidation, we expect to move forward with approximately 290 of our current store locations as the foundational footprint for Kirkland's Home, Bed Bath & Beyond Home, and Overstock.' Fast Company contacted the brand to request a list of locations that will close. We will update this story if we receive a reply. Kirkland's Home rebrand reflects a broader transformation Kirkland's corporate name will officially change to The Brand House Collective pending shareholder approval at the company's next annual meeting on July 24, 2025. Its ticker symbol will also change from 'KIRK' to 'TBHC,' pending approval next month. Kirkland's CEO, Amy Sullivan, explained the intention behind the rebrand in the company news release: 'We're aligning our identity with our vision to become a multi-brand merchandising, supply chain and retail operator—and backing it with decisive actions to strengthen our foundation: reducing excess inventory, closing underperforming locations, optimizing real estate assets, and enhancing talent across the organization.' Amy Sullivan will lead as the CEO and chief merchant and creative officer of The Brand House Collective. The company announced the following additions to its corporate team: Chief Operating Officer Jamie Schisler will oversee operations. VP General Merchandising Manager of Bed Bath & Beyond Home Kerri Dlugokinski will lead all merchandising efforts. VP of Supply Chain Courtenay Adolf is responsible for global sourcing, transportation, and distribution centers. The retailer also announced changes to its board of directors. Effective June 24, 2025, appointees Eric Schwartzman, Neely Tamminga, Tamara Ward, and Steve Woodward will serve as board members. In October 2024, Kirkland's announced a strategic partnership with Beyond, Inc., which owns brands Bed Bath & Beyond, Overstock, and buybuy Baby.

James Tibbs III reacts to being in Rafael Devers trade, excited for potential future with Red Sox
While the Red Sox will see Rafael Devers in his new San Francisco Giants uniform this weekend, it might be a while before Boston fans see any of the players the team received in the surprising blockbuster. That is unless they head to Worcester or Portland, Maine. While Devers is already mashing for the Giants, the four players the Red Sox received are either injured or in the minor leagues. Hard-throwing reliever Jordan Hicks is sidelined with a foot injury, while lefty starter Kyle Harrison, outfielder James Tibbs III, and pitcher Jose Bello will be taking the bus for the foreseeable future. Harrison was sent to Triple-A Worcester after Sunday's trade was completed, and has yet to make his debut for the WooSox. Tibbs, meanwhile, is now in Double-A Portland where he made his debut for the Sea Dogs on Tuesday. The outfielder/first baseman, who is currently ranked the No. 6 prospect in the Boston system, collected his first career hit at the Double-A level on Wednesday. On Thursday night, he went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored for Portland in a 7-6 loss to Akron. Tibbs spoke with WBZ-TV's and CBS News Boston's Joe Weil ahead of Thursday's game and shared his reaction to being traded to the Red Sox, an organization he had always hoped to be a part of. He just had to take a different and very unexpected route to join the Boston franchise. Tibbs' reaction to be traded to the Red Sox Devers was traded just hours after he hit a home run for Boston in a 2-0 win over the Yankees at Fenway Park. He and his teammates were about to board a flight and head off on a nine-game west coast swing, when Devers was pulled aside and told he had been dealt to San Francisco. Tibbs' trade story was just as interesting. He was wrapping up his final game with the Eugene Emeralds in High-A ball and had just worked a walk in the ninth inning. When he got to first base, he was surprised to see he was being lifted for a pinch runner. When Tibbs got back to the dugout, the team's pitching coach handed him a phone. The director of San Francisco's farm system was on the other end, and told Tibbs he had been traded to the Boston Red Sox. "My first thought was, 'Huh, no kidding. Alright.' A lot of emotion," Tibbs told Weil. "Definitely was very sad to leave those guys; I had a great time over there and had a blast with that group of guys in Eugene. But I was immediately so fired up to become a Red Sox." Tibbs got a taste for baseball in New England when he played for the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2023. "Being in New England and playing in the Cape, I knew the love for Boston sports and the Red Sox specifically," he explained. Then Tibbs started wondering how he ended up in Boston. "Then I was like, 'Alright, who was I traded for?' When I found out it was Devers, I was like, alright, this could go one of two ways. It went both ways for sure, with a lot of mixed emotions. I tried my best not to go on social media and get my feelings hurt," he said. While the reaction among Red Sox fans certainly swayed one way after the trade was announced, it didn't take away from Tibbs' excitement. He said it was extremely humbling to be in the trade package for a player like Devers. "To be a part of something like that, it's very cool, very humbling. Very appreciative of the Red Sox giving me a chance to come and play here," said Tibbs. "Couldn't be a better spot, a better opportunity. I'm ecstatic to be here." Tibbs in the Cape Cod Baseball League Tibbs put together a solid campaign for the Whitecaps in his lone season on the Cape, slashing .303/.390/.472 with six homers, six doubles, 25 RBI, and 17 runs scored over 40 games. He was drawn to the region that summer, and hoped to return for his pro career. "I remember walking away like, 'Wow. This place is fantastic.' The people, the places, there are so many cool spots here. I'm a big food guy, and the food is phenomenal so I'm excited to be back for that as well," he said. What food is Tibbs looking forward to scarfing down the most? "Clams and lobster," he said. "It's hard to beat." Tibbs was drafted by the Giants with the 13th overall pick out of Florida State in 2024. He was hoping to go to Boston at 12th overall, but the Red Sox picked Braden Montgomery instead. (Montgomery was traded to the White Sox in the Garrett Crochet trade over the offseason.) "This was a place I had hoped to play one day," Tibbs said of the Red Sox. "I had hoped they picked me in the draft, but they didn't and now I'm here anyways. Pretty funny how the circle comes around in full." Tibbs is hoping to get a crack at Fenway Park in the near future. He was supposed to get a chance to hit some batting practice at the famous ballpark during a prospect day while with Brewster, but it was canceled because of rain when he was on-deck. "It's always been in the back of my mind. At least if I play one game in the big leagues with the Giants, I had hoped it was at Fenway. Now I get the opportunity to call it home," he said. "It's even cooler for me and even cooler for us as a family."
