'Every game a joy' - but should Gundogan stay at new-look Man City?

"Every game is a joy."The words of Ilkay Gundogan about playing under Pep Guardiola - a man whom he has spent eight years working under having been the Spaniard's first signing as Manchester City boss in captaining City to the Treble in 2023, Gundogan spent 12 months at Barcelona only to return on an initial one-year deal last summer, with the option of a further 12 Sunday night, he scored twice as City thrashed UAE side Al Ain 6-0 to progress to the last 16 of the Club World Cup and said afterwards: "I have one more year left on my contract and I'm very happy here."Gundogan's return to City 12 months ago was hailed by fans on this page as the "best signing of the window across the Premier League" and "one of City's greatest transfer moments".However, the past season has not been easy. Guardiola endured a first trophyless season since his opening campaign in Manchester in 2016-17, with City only securing Champions League final qualification on the final day. In that earlier post, fans had imagined Gundogan would "likely be a bit-part player" who provided "squad depth" but the former Germany midfielder still made 50 appearances in all competitions - the second-most of the whole City squad."It's a big privilege. I mean, otherwise I would have not joined again," the 34-year-old said on his relationship with Guardiola."Otherwise I would have not spent so many years with him at this club. I think it's just something that he has - to make players feel they have to compete on the highest level. "Every training session, every game, is just a joy. That's why he's the best." City's accelerated rebuild is well underway, with £108m already spent this summer to add to the £180m splashed in hinted at departures after Monday's match, saying: "We have - right now - a long squad, too many players, so we cannot go with 26 or 27 players this season." Kevin de Bruyne has already joined Napoli, Jack Grealish and Kyle Walker look certain to depart, while Ederson's future is there will still be continuity from the great City teams of recent years within the squad. This includes Rodri on his return return from injury, John Stones, Ruben Dias and Bernado Silva, who will stay and captain the side next do you think about Gundogan's future?Should he get a new deal and if so, what role ought he to play at Etihad Stadium?Let us know here.

Klopp's 'incredible player' leaves Liverpool to take summer departures to 12

Liverpool have seen something of an exodus this season with a 12th player now joining the list of stars to head through the exit door so far in this transfer window Liverpool's summer departures are set to be taken up to 12, with Nat Phillips closing in on a move to West Brom. Phillips broke through from the Reds' academy to become a key man in the 2020/2021 campaign. His performances with Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez all sidelined helped Liverpool secure qualification to the Champions League. They would then reach the final of that competition a year later. ‌ Despite those displays, Phillips has struggled for gametime at the Premier League champions ever since. The centre-back was instead sent out on loan to Stuttgart, Bournemouth, Celtic, Cardiff City and Derby County. ‌ His final appearance for Liverpool came against Wolverhampton Wanderers way back in January 2023. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhín Kelleher, Jakub Ojrzyński, Dominic Corness, Reece Trueman, Lee Jonas, Louis Enahoro-Marcus, Harry Evers, Jacob Poytress, Harvey Davies and Vitezslav Jaros have all already departed Anfield this summer. Phillips is now set to become the latest man to join that exodus after finally securing a permanent move away. That deal for him to move to the Hawthorns is gathering pace. According to The Athletic, Phillips is undergoing a medical on Monday with the Baggies. He has one year remaining on his contract with the Reds and had attracted interest from several Championship clubs. But it is the Midlands side who have won the race, to leave new boss Ryan Mason delighted. It is expected that Phillips will join his new club in time to link up with the Baggies for the start of pre-season later this week. The 28-year-old made 33 appearances for Derby as they secured survival in the second tier. Meanwhile, West Brom endured a disappointing season to only finish ninth, four points adrift of a play-off place. ‌ Phillps' move ends a mixed time on Merseyside for the centre-back. He made his debut against Everton in the FA Cup in January 2020, and received major praise from Klopp for his role in securing Champions League qualification a year later. 'I messaged Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips because we wouldn't be there without them," Klopp told Sky Sports News in 2022. 'I remember the final game of last season and they left the pitch with a bandage around the head, cuts on their faces, and that was really a symbol for the whole period. "We went through on one leg, with one eye… it was incredible. It was such a tough season. Hopefully nobody forgot how hard we fought to get here. We had no centre-halves, had to play midfielders in the last line, then had to use other players in midfield and nothing worked really. 'In the end, we played with two incredible players – Rhys and Nat – but we couldn't use them earlier because they needed time to adapt. So, yes, there was a bit of a point to prove and I'm really happy that the boys did that.' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Palace's Euro hopes boosted as John Textor sells stake to New York Jets owner

Textor's shares in Palace threatened to be an obstacle to their participation in the Europa League next season because the American is also a shareholder in French side Lyon, who are set to enter the same competition. Under UEFA multi-club ownership rules, it looked as though Palace would miss out. We can confirm that Robert Wood Johnson 'Woody' has signed a legally binding contract to purchase Eagle Football's holding in the club. Full club statement ⤵️#CPFC — Crystal Palace F.C. (@CPFC) June 23, 2025 However, Palace announced on Monday that Textor's 45 per cent stake in the London club has been sold to Johnson, subject to Premier League and Women's Super League approval. A club statement read: 'Crystal Palace Football Club can confirm that Robert Wood Johnson, 'Woody', an American businessman and co-owner of the New York Jets, has signed a legally binding contract to purchase Eagle Football's holding in the club. 'Whilst the completion is pending approval from the Premier League and Women's Super League, we do not envisage any issues and look forward to welcoming Woody as a partner and director of the club. 'We would like to go on record to thank John Textor for his contribution over the past four years and wish him every success for the future.' Reports have placed the price between £160m and £190m. Palace qualified for the Europa League thanks to their FA Cup final win over Manchester City last month (Nick Potts/PA) The sale may now free Palace up to play in the Europa League, for which the Eagles qualified thanks to their FA Cup final victory over Manchester City last month. Textor, who through his Eagle Football Holdings group also owns a significant stake in Brazilian side Botafogo, initially invested in Palace in 2021. The PA news agency understands a decision regarding Palace's participation is expected from UEFA before the end of June.
