Florida Panthers crack and dent Stanley Cup as title celebrations roll on
It's fair to say that the Florida Panthers are enjoying their Stanley Cup victory celebrations – but they have come at the expense of the trophy itself.
As the Panthers' celebrations kicked into gear, photographs from the festivities showed that the bowl of the trophy has sustained a crack while the bottom is dented.
Reuters reported that the incidents happened in the hours after Florida's Game 6 romp over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday to secure its second straight Stanley Cup.
Images and videos on social media showed the Panthers players celebrating their title victory at Elbo Bar in Fort Lauderdale with fans, including clips of players pouring beer from the Stanley Cup onto fans.
A spokesperson for the Hockey Hall of Fame told the Associated Press that the Keepers of the Cup plan to have it repaired by the celebration parade on Sunday.
A trophy suffering 'injuries' in title-winning celebrations isn't unheard of.
In 2011, following international soccer giant Real Madrid's winning of Spain's premier cup competition – the Copa del Rey – defender Sergio Ramos dropped the trophy from the top of a double-decker bus amid the festivities, only for the team bus to run over it and leave the silverware with a huge dent in it.
For the famed Stanley Cup, this year's predicament isn't even the wildest situation it has found itself in over its storied lifespan.
In almost cartoon-like fashion, the Montreal Canadiens left the trophy on the side of the road after winning it in 1924. The story goes that a car carrying some of the team had stalled going up a hill, meaning players had to get out to push. It wasn't until they reached the top that they realized they had left one of the most famous trophies in the world behind.
In 1994, a photo was taken of Kentucky Derby winner Go For Gin eating out of the trophy while at New York's Belmont Park after the New York Rangers had won the 'People's Trophy.'

When the Los Angeles Lakers drafted University of California, Los Angeles guard Lonzo Ball with the No. 2 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, it meant that his father, LaVar, would be front and center. The elder Ball, who played college basketball and had a brief pro football career, was essentially a hype man for his son, as well as the CEO of Big Baller Brand, a clothing and sneaker manufacturer. He drew the ire of many people when he claimed that the younger Ball was a better player than Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry and even said that the younger Ball was "the best player in the world." While the 6-foot-6 guard had his moments, he failed to even come close to playing at an All-Star level, and after two years with the Lakers, they sent him to the New Orleans Pelicans in the Anthony Davis trade. He was a key reason the Lakers drafted Lonzo Ball in 2017, and he even visited the Ball clan in Chino Hills just prior to that year's draft. He has also been involved with Walter since 2012 as part of the group that owns the Los Angeles Dodgers. Under their leadership, the Dodgers have had a tremendous amount of success, which includes two World Series championships in 2020 and 2024. As a member of the Chicago Bulls, he suffered a meniscus tear in January 2022, and although he was initially expected to miss up to eight weeks, he ended up being out of action for nearly three calendar years. He ultimately underwent multiple surgical procedures as a result of the injury. Although he returned to action on Nov. 27, 2024, he only played in 35 games afterward. For the season, he averaged 7.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 22.2 minutes a game while shooting 36.6% from the field. There have been some strange rumors circulating around the NFL coaching ranks, especially since six-time Super Bowl champion head coach Bill Belichick left the New England Patriots last offseason. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio suggested earlier this month that Belichick may have eyes on not just a return to the NFL, but also being the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There are two problems here. First, the Buccaneers already have a coach, and a coach that has won three straight division championships in Todd Bowles. Second, Belichick already has a job with the North Carolina Tar Heels. How would this make sense? Florio wrote that the Tar Heels general manager, Mike Lombardi, was suggesting that Bowles might be interested in retiring after this season, which was not substantiated by anyone. "Lombardi wouldn't shut up until this Hudson stuff happens, and now you can't find him anywhere. But he was putting out this idea that Todd Bowles would retire, possibly after the 2024 season. ... So I feel like Belichick has been eyeballing the Bucs. Maybe Lombardi was trying to speak it into existence that there'd be a vacancy there, because that's one of the teams where they've got the talent Belichick needs." Bowles isn't going anywhere unless he's fired, and while Belichick probably has an interest in a return to the NFL, we saw how interested other teams are in having him last offseason when he had zero offers.
