Cameron Munster switch gathers steam as Ponga faces brutal axing from Origin
Cameron Munster playing fullback for Queensland might not be as far-fetcher as it seems, particularly after another uninspiring performance from Kalyn Ponga on Friday night. Ponga started the year in superb form and edged ahead of Reece Walsh in the race to be Billy Slater's Maroons fullback.
With Walsh suffering a knee injury and ruled out of Origin 1, the spot is there for the taking for Ponga. But the Knights have now lost seven of their last eight games, and Ponga's form has fallen off a cliff.
The superstar fullback had 22 runs for a whopping 254 metres in a 28-6 loss to Parramatta on Friday night. He broke six tackles and made two line-breaks, helping set up the Knights' only try to James Schiller.
It was probably enough to convince Slater to pick him in Origin 1 on May 28, but many were left suggesting the concerning dip in form might be too big of a risk. Slater has the option of using Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow at fullback, but would likely prefer he remains in the centres.
There have also been whispers in recent days that Slater is even considering using Munster at fullback to accomodate Tom Dearden at five-eighth. Dearden has been in good form for the Cowboys and is the incumbent No.6 for the Australian Kangaroos.
With Daly Cherry-Evans seemingly a lock to play halfback despite some poor form of his own, Slater could look to utilise both Munster and Dearden in the starting team. It would mean Ponga is forced to play the No.14 role off the bench, or miss out entirely.
Injured utility Ben Hunt even flagged the possibility of Munster playing fullback this week. "There's definitely really good options - depending on what Billy wants to do," he said on 4BC radio.
"You're hearing some chat about maybe Munster going to fullback and things like that. If he wants to put Munster at fullback and start Tommy (Dearden) in the halves, then you've got KP (Kalyn Ponga) on the bench, so that's pretty handy as well. [Ponga's] debut he played in the middle and was probably our best player. He wouldn't be a bad option."

Ponga started on the bench in Game 3 last year with Walsh at fullback, but wasn't particularly effective when he came on the field. The Maroons' attack looked a bit clunky, with too many playmakers trying to get involved.
Discussing the possibility of Munster playing fullback on Friday, NRL Immortal Andrew Johns described it as "ridiculous". He said on the 'Immortal Behaviour' podcast: "You don't weaken one position to strengthen another. Munster hasn't played fullback for a long time and fitness-wise, it's totally different - you are doing a lot more running.
"You're also organising the defensive line, that's an art in itself. It won't happen … not at all."
Speaking on Friday night after Newcastle's loss, Ponga admitted his form isn't where he'd like it to be. 'I want to be there obviously," he said of State of Origin selection. "It's a prestigious jersey. It's an honour to wear (the Queensland) jersey. I would love to be in that arena again.'

Broncos fans call out concerning Reece Walsh images as Origin recall in jeopardy
NRL fans were left concerned as Reece Walsh lined-up to play for the Broncos after he was struggling in the warm-up, before a number of individual errors cost his team. The Broncos were looking to string two performances together for the first time in a while as they entered the clash at Suncorp after a victory two weeks ago against the Titans. However, Walsh was visibly struggling when going through his routine with his right leg still strapped. Walsh returned from his MCL injury two weeks ago and appeared to be rejuvenated. However, the 22-year-old wasn't moving as well ahead of the Sharks clash and it was pointed out by Fox Sports sideline reporter Eloise Sohier. "Reece Walsh warmed-up metres away from me. He looked really uncomfortable. He called for extra strapping on that right knee," she said. And Melbourne Storm legend Cooper Cronk suggested he wasn't moving well in the first play of the game. "His first touch off the scrum wasn't exactly dynamic," Cronk said in commentary. This prompted questions to why Michael Maguire played Walsh when he was visibly struggling with his knee injury. And the pressure quickly piled on the Broncos having entered half-time 22-12 down after some horror defensive efforts. Walsh was involved in one when Teig Wilton made a break through the Broncos line and easily stepped back on the inside past the fullback. Walsh looked slow to react, clearly hampered by his injury. NRL fans have been left in disbelief at the effort from Latrell Mitchell and an injury-hit Rabbitohs having pushed Melbourne Storm to golden point as Craig Bellamy was seen losing his temper in the coaching box. The Storm entered the clash against South Sydney Rabbitohs as heavy favourites with the likes of Harry Grant and Cameron Munster backing up from Queensland's State of Origin win. And Grant ducked over the try line after only a few moments, before Jahrome Hughes scored to send shockwaves through the Rabbitohs team. The Storm looked like they could run up a cricket score against the Rabbitohs with Wayne Bennett's side missing a host of stars after a horror run of injuries for the club. However, Mitchell showed why he is one of the most feared players in the game having put on a masterclass to drag the Rabbitohs from the brink and into the contest. Mitchell set up three tries for Alex Johnston with similar cutout passes as the Storm failed to contain the Rabbitohs fullback. But it was the fourth try to Tyrone Munro that left fans in awe. The Storm had just taken the lead 24-20 after Tyran Wishart scored following a sensational solo run from Sua Fa'alago. The Rabbitohs appeared to have run out of steam with the Storm holding them out with a few minutes left. But the Rabbitohs managed to get the ball back after a Storm mistake with five minutes to go. Charging down the field, Latrell got the ball 40 metres out from the Storm try line and noticed Ryan Papenhuyzen was out of position. The fullback put in a long grubber behind the defensive line and it bounced up nicely for Munro. The play levelled the score at 24-all, but Mitchell wasn't able to slot the conversion from the sideline. Unfortunately for the Rabbitohs, Papenhuyzen slotted home the winning drop goal during golden point to end a valiant effort from a battered and bruised South Sydney side. Rabbitohs centre Jack Wighton was full of praise for his side after the game. "We fought right to the end there but fell short," Wighton said. While they lost the game, the praise belonged to Johnston and Mitchell. Fans were in awe of Mitchell's ability to stand up when his team needs him the most with the NSW Blues star backing up after a tough Origin appearance. Mitchell is also going a long way to shut down his critics that doubted he was the best option for fullback at the Rabbitohs. The Storm were uncharacteristically ill-disciplined in the final 20 minutes against South Sydney and turned over the ball a number of times. With the Storm leading 24-20 with five minutes left, Melbourne lost the ball pushing the past through the hands of the outside backs. This handed the Rabbitohs the ball and an attempt to level the game. And the broadcast panned up to coach Bellamy who was unleashing what appeared to be a tirade into the walkie talkie after the error. Fans were left stunned and worried for the Storm players who were potentially in for one of Bellamy's stern talks in the dressing room. While Bellamy cut a more relaxed figure after the game, fans were left stunned at the coaching box blow-up. "We lost patience but having said that, you've got to give Souths a lot of credit for coming back," said Bellamy. "I think we were really fortunate to get out of it at the end." The Storm jumped to third on the ladder after the victory, with the Warriors going down to the Panthers, while the Rabbitohs dropped to 15th as they wait for some of their stars to return. While the Rabbitohs are struggling for results, Johnston moved only six behind the benchmark of 212 tries that Ken Irvine set in 1973. "I said to him at half-time, 'Have you got another try?'
